[post_content] => Sitting on the plane home from my 4-week home to my 16-year home has given me time to reflect upon all that Peru has taught me the past month. I have had the chance to learn about another way of life and have grown accustomed to it. Now, going back, I will more easily see the differences between these two societies. I have built a support system and a family in both, but they are very different. One, I was born into and the other I created myself. I am very grateful for this new family I have in Peru.
Although our group of 15 will likely not be all together under the same situation again, our experience will be frozen in time. I am sad to leave all our experiences behind. But I've made my mark on Peru. Whether it be through a footprint by the glacier lake at the base of Ausangante, sharing words with the arieros, or teaching Lisbeh a phrase in English.
Our whole group has been changed by Peru, but we've also changed Peru, even if only by a small sliver. This is what is so special about traveling. You can be so affected by a place or a culture, but make almost no effect yourself. The cities we saw will stay the same. The infamous steps to Hostal Resbalosa will still be incredibly tough. The mountains we hiked will be just as important to the people after us as they were to the people before us. Fabian will still be playing his flute. Fresh coca will still be sold on the street corner in Ocangate. False alpaca sweaters will still be overpriced across the country.
Our finale began 3 nights ago with our cacao ceremony, it continued with our final dinner in Peru, waving goodbye to Alan and Marta from the security line and will finish in a few hours when I say my final goodbyes to the people I've spent around 720 hours with.
The past few days I've been thinking about all the lasts. The last dinner, the last glimpse of the llama eyes, the last (semi-dangerous) taxi ride, the last view of the Apus, the last hug, the last few soles, the last laughs. But I'd rather reflect on all our firsts, because there have been so many. There needs to be more firsts than lasts, and on this trip there were. And as Alan said, even though this circular adventure is ending, as I return home I will start a new circle with a different adventure. This time it will include 14 new faces. Urpillay sonqollay, Perú. Nos vemos.

[post_content] => Dear friends and family,

We're in Miami! The students (apart from Alex and Luana, who are already safely at home) are getting ready to catch their connecting flights after a successful X-Phase and Transference during our final 10 days in Peru.

While the multiple 5000m+ passes and cold nights of the Ausangate trek made it literally AND figuratively breathtaking, the group rose to the challenge handily. Their individual strength and group cooperation during the trek were impressive to witness and led to a reflective and fun time together during Transference.

We as instructors want to thank Sten, Klas, Jack, Oliver, Lucas, Wyatt, Penelope, Halsey, Ellie, Alex, Luana, and Amy for making this course so memorable. Over the past few weeks, we've seen you all push yourselves outside of your comfort zone, whether for you that meant camping in icy weather, sharing a shower with spiders, crossing a steep 5800m pass, organizing every detail of a five-day trek, eating potatoes twelve meals in a row, or sharing personal reflections with a group of your peers. We couldn't be prouder of each of you.

We also want to thank the parents, family, and friends of these awesome students. We acknowledge that sending your teenager to another hemisphere with very limited communication has likely been a challenge, and we appreciate your trust and patience. Your support and love of your student throughout this process has meant a lot to them and to Dragons, and they are excited to share their experiences with you in their own ways over the coming days and weeks.

Gracias por todo! Nos vemos pronto.

Abrazos,
Leah, Alan, y Marta

[post_content] => Dear Dragons friends and family,

The four week Peru groups have boarded their flight in Cusco, and are en route to Lima.  Both groups have enjoyed a powerful course-end and transference these past few days, and are ready for the bittersweet journey home.  They will have a 3-hour layover in Lima before continuing on to Miami after midnight.  They are scheduled to land in Miami at 7:20 am local time.

We will post an update when the group has arrived in Miami tomorrow morning.  We send gratitude to families who made this experience possible and wish you all a very happy reunion!

We have been in touch with the team, and all is well on their final expedition trek around the base of Mt. Ausangate.  The group has faced cold temperatures and challenging terrain, but reaching the highest pass yesterday was extremely rewarding.  The students have come together to organize the food and logistics for their journey, and are enjoying sweeping views of one of the most sacred peaks in the Andes.

The group will wrap up their trek today, and will have the chance to dip into natural hot springs at their end-point in the Quechua village of Pac'chanta.  They will transition into the Transference phase of their course tomorrow at an eco-lodge nearby.

Student posts coming soon!

As my 3 weeks in Peru comes to an end and I wave goodbye to some of the most amazing people I've ever met, I am overcome with sadness. This trip was the most memorable experience I've ever had and I couldn't have asked for a better group to spend my time with. I'll never forget the countless memories I've had with you guys: freezing on the Lares Trek, exploring beautiful towns like Urubamba, Pisac, and Cusco, spending 9 hours at the hospital, being told countless times not to pet stray dogs, learning phrases in Quechua, eating potatoes 24/7, eating arroz Chaufa, finding our LIP CHAKRAS :))), becoming fluent in Swedish, climbing up the stairs to the Resablosa hostel 10000 times, taking the coldest showers ever, scratching all of our bug bites, Marta's "WOWWWW's!!!!", our nicknames for each other, truth or truth/never have i ever, staying up till 2 am, the hot springs, bus rides, falling down all the time on hikes, and so much more. I feel so incredibly blessed that I got to meet people from all over the world; I will for sure be visiting all of you guys soon. Everyone of you impacted my time in Peru; thank you so much.

Luana, thank you for being my go-to person whenever I needed to rant about something. I can't say thank you enough. I can't wait to come and party in Brazil soon!!!

Ellie, thank you for calming me down during the Home stay and always being willing to listen to me. I honestly couldn't have survived those few days without you.

Penelope, thank you for always listening to all the weird things I say and giving me awesome advice!!! Idk what I would've done without you.

Halsey, thank you for always knowing what to say and for making me smile all the time. You're one of the funniest people I've ever met!! Never lose your sense of humor!!

Amy, thank you for volunteering to talk to someone for me and always being willing to step in with a situation when I need help. You're awesome!!!! (And I'm jealous of your fighting skills)

Klas, thank you for teaching me Swedish, I'm so glad I'm fluent now so I can understand you and Sten's conversations!!! I'll miss you a ton, especially our 2 am convos about random stuff including when you tried to explain to me the Swedish schooling system. I still don't understand that. Anyways, have fun back in Sweden!! Party a lot!! #LITLITLIT

Sten, thank you for sometimes explaining to me what you and Klas are talking about in Swedish (especially fitta hahahahahah) "whenever i see a hot girl I'm just gonna go up and smile at her" nice plan!!!

Lucas, thank you for having a quirky sense of humor and always making people laugh. You always need one of those people on a trip and you're pretty hilarious.

Oliver, thank you for being a pretty cool 14 year old. Sorry that we sat together on a plane for 9 hours and didn't speak to each other at all. Glad that changed!! You're so funny and you could always put a smile on my face. The trip wouldn't have been the same without you.

Wyatt, thank you for loving the Red Sox with me!! Our convo about sports last night was pretty sweet. Have fun in Boston!!

Jack, where do I even start?? thank you for being the coolest Chuck bass out there. You're by far one of the most intelligent people I've ever met and I'll miss your arguments with people. Never lose your sense of curiosity and your willingness to fight for something. I'll miss your strong opinions and your ability to control a situation. It truly is a quality not many people have and it's pretty awesome that you do. I don't really know what I would've done if I didn't have you to hit me up with advice all the time and to talk to about the randomest stuff. I hope your half British accent treats you well. I'll miss you a ton.

hahahaha 12:52 am. u know what I mean.

P.s. effort is key and please accomplish your goal.

Greetings from Ocongate!
We arrived here Tuesday evening after a fabulous three days in the Weyqecha Biological Station. Sandra, Robinson, and the research team took excellent care of us, feeding us very well and teaching us about their important research in the cloud forest. Students went on multiple jungle hikes, set and took down camera traps on their own, and learned about the battle for Amazon conservation in Peru. We ended our stay with some outdoor games and a long discussion about ways to cut waste at home.
Last night was Alex's final night on the program -- the group celebrated by singing and dancing in the hostel courtyard and sharing their favorite memories and inside jokes with her. She's headed to Cusco today with Leah to catch a flight back to Dallas this evening. We'll definitely miss her this last week!
Meanwhile, the rest of the group left this morning to begin the Ausangate trek. (Leah will rejoin them at their second campsite on the evening of the 21st.) Because this is their "X-Phase" (Expedition Phase), the students were in charge of making a trek plan with the local guide, Fabian, as well as coordinating, purchasing, and cooking all meals for the trek. The Ausangate trek will last five days, with the group gradually ascending to cross the highest pass (Abra Q'ampa) of 5,500m on the fourth day. We'll end at a hot springs, giving everyone a chance to relax and refresh. This trek will definitely be more demanding than the Lares trek, but the group feels prepared and excited for the challenge.
Look for trek reflections from everyone after we return to Ocongate on the 24th for Transference.
Abrazos,
Los instructores
