[post_content] => In my opinion, which I'm sure a few of my companions would agree with, the most rewarding moments of this trip have stemmed from interactions with people. I've gotten lost many times, and it's from breaking my comphort zone and talking to people in a language I barely know that I have been able to get home safely. We've had to interview strangers several times, in different cities, such as Kunming and Chengdu, and through that learn their stories. Because of this, I've met several people who I'll talk to far beyond the trip. I have met people who will help teach me Chinese, and I have promised others that I'll teach them English.

Tonight, for example, John and I were the center of attention yet again at the town square. While we were talking I spotted a lady who was trying to take a photo of me discreetly. When I flashed her a peace sign, she broke down laughing and I unknowingly started a trend. Soon thereafter, dozens of people came to me asking me to make the sign with them as they took photos. I had parents ask me to do it with their kids while they frantically hurried to get their phones out. People were turning to each other doing it as if they'd never seen it before. I kept hearing the words 外国人 (foreigner), 美国人 (American), and 英国人 (British) yelled by schoolchildren who wanted to dance with us.

Maybe I'm shallow, but for me it's the facination people have with me that's my favorite thing. At home, I have to work for people's attention, but here everyone instantly wants to know more about me. Girls ask for my phone number instead of the other way around, locals I never met text my friends because they want me to come by and meet them, and people are always looking over my shoulder to see me write notes in English. It's something I've never experienced before, and it may be a double edged sword (I mean, literally everyone hands me forks), but the intrigue of this trip has definitely come from the people and interactions. In fact, to ensure I'll never forget them, I'll sometimes write my conversations into my daily logs at night. Not only do people make every day more interesting, but it will make this experience even more valuable after I return home with so many newfound connections.

[post_content] => Last night was probably the most fun I've had all trip. When our host mom asked earlier in the day if we wanted to 跳舞, or dance, I wasn't very excited for anything more than just finally using our vocabulary word in real life, which I had gotten incorrect on many tests. After driving through the bamboo shoots and through the haze of the jungle, we exited the car and immediately everyone started looking at us. It was like my classmates Sam, Cole, and I were celebrities, everyone flocked around us. Sam and I caught old ladies saying 不做(not bad) or 很衰 (very handsome), which was a little weird, but we kind of just accepted it. They all wanted to dance and I was able to negotiate that I would learn how to dance with my host mom at first, thank God. Everyone started taking videos of me dancing, either because I was so incredibly bad or so incredibly good-- I'd like to believe it was the latter. We danced all night, soaking it all in and learning all these dances, and we had so much fun! We didn't care about the swarms of mosquitos or who it was we were dancing with, all we cared about was trying to synchronize with the beat and improve, and that is what made it so much fun. Although I believe that in some ways I am more privileged than the host family I am staying with, this dancing, which Sam and I pleased we do every night until we leave, made me kind of jealous that in China people can just go out and dance in the middle of a road and don't need to worry about a thing.

[post_content] => This morning, after having settled into our bunks on the train the previous night, we awoke to the sunrise coming over the mountains of the Sichuan Province. By noon, the train had arrived in Chengdu, the capital of the Province. We then headed for the bus to our hostel, not before bargaining to buy some live chickens on the street, (unfortunately, they were a little too expensive). We arrived at the Dragon Town Hostel, which is in the middle of the Wide Alley (宽巷了), which is a popular tourist attraction in Chengdu. We settled in for a bit, ate some lunch, and then went to visit the People's Park for some journaling time. In additional to personal reflection, we were assigned to ask two strangers their names, hobbies, and favorite foods as a way to practice our Chinese. After our time in the park, we went out to dinner out at a local Hot Pot restaurant. Many of us elected to eat as many spicy dishes as possible, in order to get a real taste of the food in Chengdu. Some even took drinks of the fluid the food was cooked in, in which hot peppers had been marinating for several hours. Needless to say, it was not the most pleasant of experiences. Once everybody could feel their tongues again, we returned back to Dragon Town for a good night's sleep before our trip to the village in the morning.

Description

This morning, after having settled into our bunks on the train the previous night, we awoke to the sunrise coming over the mountains of the Sichuan Province. By noon, the train had arrived in Chengdu, the capital of the Province. We then headed for the bus to our hostel, not before bargaining to buy some […]

[post_content] => Today was a day where we were exclusively spending time with our host families. I thought it would be an experience that would make me nervous and scared, but I was very wrong. After getting 9 hours of sleep, the most sleep we have gotten on this trip, my host mother who speaks English went to English class with her son and my host brother, leaving me and Alexander with only the father who spoke little English. We started walking around the beautiful streets of Kunming. We first went to the Kunming University, which I understood little of the father's explanation of the complexity of the design, but I did understand in the main yard there were two Chinese gateways, one was the 儿子 or boy, and one was the 女儿 or girl. We then went to a Buddhist temple in the center of Kunming. The temple was inexplicably beautiful, and I will remember that temple for the rest of my life. No one can explain the beauty of the temple you need to experience it yourself. Once again I did not understand the complexity of the artwork and symbols in the temple, but I hope to research it more in English. Then we went to a market street, which had everything from jade to beetles. After we got lunch on this street we drove to the dian chi, a massive lake near kunming, and biked around enjoying the beauty the lake had to offer. I thought today would be nerve-racking, but it was one of if not my favorite days in China so far and I would not change it for the world.

[post_content] => After a somewhat hectic trip back to our homestay home, which involved Will and I trying to find our bus stop and then trying to ask for directions in a street market in a alleyway once we got off our bus, we found our host father. We then got in his car and went to pick up his son, Tommy, from school. We then went for a delicious dinner in the Kunming city center. After dinner we walked around looking at the various tea and other specialty shops. This evening was very good as it was a great bonding time between us and our host family.  Tomorrow I look forward to spending the day with our host family!
