[post_content] => Hello parents and friends!  Well, our bags are packed and we are getting ready to enjoy our last few hours in China together.  We will flying out of Hong Kong today at 6:45 pm and landing in LA around 6pm on the evening of the 6th (we lose a day due to the international date line). Parents, you may get some excited calls from your students when we land!  If our flights change or there's any delay when we arrive we will let you know.  We are looking forward to a safe journey home after our amazing adventure.  See you in Charlotte early on the 7th!

[post_content] => We have just finished our mainland experience, so now we are in Hong Kong. So in this yak I'm going to compare the Han parts of china with the Tibetan parts. For starters the Han places we visited were more densely populated, not to say that the Tibetan region weren't populated but the Han areas where much more. For the culture, they felt very different. The Han culture seems direct and straight forward while the Tibetan side isn't quite as straight forward. For example, the Han would take the most immediate way possible and do it a speedier fashion; while the Tibetans' would still be quick but they mite take a more scenic route that takes a little longer. The shops are also very different, the Han shops have more processed things that are often made of plastic, they also sell a lot more tea related things. This is a major contrast to what is normally sold in Tibetan stores. In Tibetan stores they tend to have a lot of hand made things like prayer beads, and lots of gold Buddhas (ranging in small ones you can hold in your hand to huge ones where  have no idea where you could put it). The only thing that is really similar about the two cultures is the community feeling they both strongly beam.

Hey everyone! Here are some pictures of Hong Kong. I love this city so much. The double decker buses, the people driving on the left side of the road, the bustling and narrow streets, the people, the markets, the neon signs, I love it all. It quite a bit different from mainland China; imagina a Chinese-ish city that is very international, speaks pretty good English, put 150 years of British influence and culture, then stir-fry it: you got Hong Kong. We have seen countless and brand new Maserati, Porsche, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes, and Ferrari cars everywhere. The hotel we are in is very nice and even has its own smartphone that you can take OUTSIDE the hotel and use it! It has cellular data and all the bells and whistles; it really helps with navigation. Tonight we went to the Temple Street Night Market and got some cool stuff. The lights here is what really stands out, and we haven’t even been to the Harbor yet, which is where the REAL lights are. We were a bit tired today because we jammed OUT last night to some Karaoke for a solid four hours. It was a good way to leave Chengdu; that city is also very unique and cool with the teahouse, Daoist Temple and mountain, hot pot restaurants, and chill vibes Hong Kong photos are coming soon. We are having a blast here and I can’t wait for tomorrow!

[post_content] => Hi Parents and friends!  The past few days in Chengdu have been delightful!  In recent days, our intrepid group has dug in to many local delicacies, relaxed in native style in Chengdu's gorgeous teahouses, cheered on Sichuan opera performers and climbed a sacred mountain.  As always, everyone has been amazingly kind, responsible, and supportive and we are having a great time.  Now that our explorers have had plenty of practice over the last few weeks of travel, it's time for them to take the reins -- tomorrow we fly to Hong Kong, where they will control our itinerary and run the trip like the smart, adventuresome travelers they truly are!  We will be in Hong Kong for two days before flying home on the 7th.  We hope to have more updates and pictures for you soon once touch down at our final stop. Everyone is happy, healthy, and safe.  It's been a wonderful trip and we are looking forward to making the most of our last few days in China!

[post_content] => Hello family and friends! We decided to cut our homestays short and not visit the nunnery for two days so we are back in Chengdu early! (we got in the 30th). Staying with the nomads was certainly an incredible experience that few take part in. We hiked 3 hours or so to our nomad tents (which were actually very close to the Eco Lodge but couldn't be easily accessed because of a river). The tent I stayed in was down a big hill from some of the others and quite near the river. I stayed with Nina and Grace and with us three and six nomads our small tent held a total of nine people. The family we stayed with consisted of two sisters, one of the sisters husbands, a very young baby, a toddler girl, and a young boy. I'm really bad at guessing ages so I wont even try.

Anyway, here are a few photos from the past few days. I'm sure others will add to these soon.

[post_content] => Hello friends and family,

We have been having a blast with some rugged travel in the last three days.

Sat, June 24 - Chengdu to Kangding
So we take a 7 hour bus ride to the city of Kangding. The ride was beautiful, with tall and lush mountains and incredible views. It was sometimes a little narrow and rugged, but safe nonetheless. We reach Kangding in the late afternoon, and check into our hostel, which was very unique looking and Tibetan-style. We eat a delicious dinner and then go to bed.

Sun, June 25 - Kangding to Angela's Ecolodge in Tagong (Where the Nomads live)
We eat some breakfast at the same place as last night, then go shopping for some gear. Mobi Gardens hooked us up and gave us a decent deal since we bought so much stuff. In Kangding and Tagong, it is pretty cold. After shopping, we go on a 3 hour van ride to the ecolodge. The views were even more beautiful than the bus ride, consisting of Yaks, coldness, mountains, and a flowing river. We stop and eat lunch, tour a small monastery, and then take another 15 minutes to the lodge. The ecolodge might be the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life. The place is self-suffecient in power with solar pannels, in food with yaks and a garden, and water with a small creek from the mountains. It is decorated with Tibetan art, there's lots of wood, and a side patio/greenhouse with plants. the rooms are also very nice. we are surround3d by beautiful grasslands, a river, and some white mountains in the distance. We are at an elevation of about 13,000 feet, and we are taking pretty well with little altitude sickness. Nina and Alyssa are taking very good care of us. Anyway, the lodge has four kittens, and EVERYBODY loves them. They are very cute.

For Mon, June 26, Nitara will fill you in.

We are having so much fun, as this is probably the best and most interesting things I have done in my life (so far).

Love to everyone,

Nicky Booth

[post_content] => It has been really awesome staying at Angela Langford's Eco lodge for the past two nights. We have all enjoyed the beautiful views, the delicious food, the cute kittens, and the coffee.

Yesterday (the 26th) was a pretty busy day for us. We got to sleep in some and all met downstairs at 9:30 for breakfast and a morning check in. Then we went on a short but steep hike up to the top of a hill. The altitude is about 13,000 ft here and it makes it a lot more difficult to breathe when doing any kind of exercise. It was impressive to me how many different kinds of flowers are currently blooming. I must have seen twenty different kinds on our short hike. When we got back we rested for a bit and then some of us went out to explore and take photos. The ground here is kind of marshy and there are some parts where you step on grass and there is a water bubble underneath so the entire ground moves like a waterbed. We came back to the lodge when lunch was ready then after we ate we went out to do our service project. Previously the plan was to build a bridge but we are unskilled workers who don't know anything about building bridges. Also, the water is too high and sometimes having foreigners come in and build things like bridges can cause conflict and tension between clans. So instead we worked on filling a giant hole with dirt! The hole collects water and when baby yaks fall in they sometimes drown. We worked for three hours and made a lot of progress.

After our service project we went back inside, ate some dinner, and played cards. The Eco lodge also has a sauna and Angela was nice enough to fire that up for us so we sat in there for half an hour or so before it got too hot.

Today (the 27th) we are heading to the Nomad camps to stay with them for 3 days. Nomads don't have wifi (surprise surprise) so expect yaks on the 2nd or 3rd of July when we return to Chengdu. Oh also, we apologize for the lack of photos. They are difficult to upload.
