Selamat datang students, teachers, parents and friends!

Welcome to the Indonesia: Cape Henry yak board!

My name is Mark Lumley and I am one of your instructors for this coming summer program. This will be my 15th Dragons program and words can’t describe how excited I am about our imminent adventure!

I am absolutely delighted that you have chosen to come and explore and learn about Indonesia this summer, and we certainly have a wonderful adventure ahead of us. In no time at all you will be dusting off your backpacks, bidding farewell to family and friends and setting off on the adventure of a lifetime.

As I sit here in Yogyakarta (also known as Jogja, and the place we’ll be starting our program), writing this introduction letter, my mind keeps taking me back to my own travels, experiences and transitional moments over the past 13 years spent living in Asia. I keep coming back to that seminal moment just before I boarded the plane for the first time: the anticipation of what was to come; the trepidation and fear of whether I would truly be able to assimilate into a completely new and foreign culture. At that time in my life I was actively seeking the unknown, much as many of you will be this summer. I wanted to be confused and bewildered by China and all she had to throw at me.

As I boarded the plane to Shanghai that first time my mind was filled with pre-conceived notions of what my new life would be like. I envisioned dusty roads, locals wearing conical, bamboo hats, men wearing blue, communist style ‘Mao Zedong’ suits and everybody eating rice and only rice! These preconceived notions seem silly now as I look back, and they were quickly dispelled the moment I arrived in Shanghai. Dispelled to a certain extent that is, as these things still exist in many places in China to varying degrees, just not everywhere and not so much in a thriving metropolis such as Shanghai.

Of course, it is natural to approach new experiences in this way; especially ones that we anticipate will be ‘strange’ or different. We all see life through our own cultural lens, shaped by our experiences, family, friends, media, our governments and school life, amongst other things. It is also perfectly normal for us to want to apply our own cultural blueprint to different and new experiences; it’s a natural survival instinct.

After many years of living in Asia what I have learned is that it’s equally important for us to be able to shred that blueprint into tiny little pieces, go back to the drawing board and start again. The new blueprint you create will be larger, more varied and abound with a new sense of freedom and a deeper understanding of the world around you, and just as importantly yourself. It’s a complex process that takes intention, time and patience: concepts which are often superseded by the 21st Century ideals of immediacy and instant gratification.

What preconceptions do you have about Indonesia? How are you looking to widen your cultural lens and rewrite your own cultural blueprint this summer? How will you approach this?

Those first 6 months of living in China were probably the most difficult for me. I felt like life was testing me everyday and I struggled with everything. I recall feeling a deep sense of frustration at that time. If I’m honest, there were more than a few times when I wanted to throw in the towel, give up and go home.  In reflection I realise that this time was actually a seminal moment in my own personal development. It was during this liminal period that I learned the most.

In Tibetan Buddhism the word, ‘Bardo’, can be translated as a ‘liminal’ or ‘transitional state’. Metaphorically it can be used to describe a period when our usual way of life becomes suspended. There will be times this summer when you are in your liminal state. I truly believe these times are the very best times to learn, though it would be foolish to assume these periods come without challenges.

What challenges do you foresee for this coming summer? How will you approach these challenges during our journey together?

Although I called China home for many years so many roads kept leading me to South East Asia, which is where I’ve spent most of the last 4-5 years.  During that time, I have done a whole host of different things and lived in many different places, from living with rural families in villages on the banks of the Mekong in Laos, to spending quality time in Tibetan villages high up on the Tibetan plateau. All my experiences have shaped me in some way and I continue to learn so much from the people I meet in Asia, as I’m sure you will too.

I have a deep love of education and it’s something I have been involved with for 13 years now, as a teacher, educator, facilitator and trainer. In all that time I have continued to learn from my experiences and those around me. I am also incredibly passionate about development and social justice issues. I have worked with numerous charities and NGOs helping to raise funds and awareness about a multitude of differing issues here in Asia.

Since I first moved to Asia in 2004 I have spent considerable time in South East Asia, living, working and travelling. As I said earlier this will be my 15th Dragons program in Asia. For the past few years I've been working almost exclusively in South East Asia. I first came to Indonesia in 2010 and this will be my 4th time leading a program here  It’s truly difficult not to fall in love with this country, the people and the culture! That said, i myself am not an expert in Indonesia language or culture. its a deeply rich and complex country and I look forward to continuing my own learning and journey here again this summer.

What I love most about Indonesia  are the people.  They are known for their extremely welcoming and affable nature, which extends to all visitors. This is something that you will experience first hand here and hopefully something that will aid you as you learn to navigate the streets of Jogja or Tana Toraja by yourselves.

I look forward to sharing all I know about life here in Indonesia and Asia, as well as continuing to learn from our experiences together and the world around me. I am very keen and eager to converse with you all on every aspect of Indonesia. I am so excited about treading unfamiliar paths, discovering new places, meeting new people, making new friends and feasting on sumptuous Indonesian dishes.

As instructors we can only lay down the details of the program, but this course is your course and it is you that will make this the experience of a lifetime. So when you are packing your bag for the adventure that lies ahead, please bring with you: a heathy dose of courage to step outside of your comfort zone, patience to help deal with the travails of travel on the road, an inquisitive, open-mind; a gracious and caring heart, and a large dose of humour. Seriously, the last one is essential for surviving on the road (and in life!).

If anyone has any questions about our imminent adventure, then please don’t hesitate to contact me at marklumley@gmail.com. If you feel it is a question or query that the whole group would be interested in then please post a yak!

So, I will leave you all for now and I can’t wait to meet you all in Indonesia to embark on our adventure together.

I can’t wait to finally meet you all. Please continue to check the Yak Board as we’ll be posting important messages they come up.

Warmest Regards,

Hello my new friends, the students and teachers of Cape Henry Collegiate coming soon to Indonesia. How are you? Apa kabar?

What have you been doing the last few days? What kind of preparation do you all already make? Do you start looking names of places like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Makassar, or even islands of Java and Sulawesi on your Google Maps? Are your minds now filled up with so many questions about Indonesia? The foods...Satay, Gudeg, Rendang, how spicy they are? Are they delicious? Languages...how hard are they to learn? Religions & cultures? Mountains and seas? The weather? The People....how do people live their life on the other side of your world? And perhaps many more questions you all have right now.

Well, if this is what going on right now, you may keep those questions with you. Soon you are about to discover the answers –or perhaps still part of the answers- by yourself first hand. You will give yourself the best opportunity to broaden your dimension by bringing your body, mind, and soul into this journey.

My name is Sulistyo Sapto Winarno. Pretty hard name to remember, eh? Yes, it may hard even just to say it. Well, just call me SOEL to make it easy. Just like you mention the capital city of South Korea, or the Spanish word sol for the sun. I am one of the Dragons instructors who will be with you during his trip. I am so excited and very grateful to join with you all on this trip, showing the communities that I love and happy to spend my time with, helping you create the atmospheres of learning from these places and people.

I was born and raised in Yogyakarta, Indonesia –the city of students, tourism and culture. I grew up and spent all my childhood with Javanese cultural way of life in a small peaceful village just outside the Prambanan Temple. Since I was a little boy I always liked adventures which I usually did around my village: playing with mud on the paddy fields, catching fish barehands or swimming in the small rivers, riding a water buffalo, climbing trees, etc. When I studied in college, however, I had to move and lived away from my family. It was the time when I started to develop my adventure skills by joining the campus adventure club, which taught me not only technical skill but also knowledge and ethics to be in the outdoors. Soon, I spent most of my week ends and holidays exploring natures: camping and jungle trekking, climbing almost all mountains in Java and surrounding islands, exploring horizontal and vertical limestone caves in southern Java, and riding the white water raft.

Graduating college in English Teaching, I spent one year teaching in a formal school and another 3 months working as an administration staff in a trading company before I decided to follow my calls in adventures. The passions in adventures and love in teaching led me to join the Outward Bound, a reputable outdoor education company, as a field instructor. I found I was so much in love with this job:  professional, demanding, highly standard, yet lots fun, supports, and developing. I worked at this training company for 5 years as a field instructor, and another 15 months as the School Manager. Then I resigned and became an independent outdoor instructor which gave me opportunities to meet more people and to travel to many more interesting places. In spring till summer 2012 and 2013, I lived in Boston, Massachusetts where I worked for Thompson Island Outward Education Center leading some Sea-Kayak expedition programs around Boston Harbor, and other in-island environmental and character development training as well.

Dear my new friends, you got to be so grateful to have the chance to see other part of the world at your young age. You have the courage to take the decision left things behind to go into this adventure. I am very proud of you. During this trip you will also meet my fellow Dragons instructor Mark Lumley. He is a good man, very friendly and always ready to support, a knowledgeable and passionate educator. I feel so lucky to work with him in this trip.

Well, if you have any questions, please post them on the Yak, so other people might learn and need that information as well. Feel free to email me as well.

Thank you! Terima Kasih!

[post_content] => Good morning! My name is Casey Lee and I am thrilled to serve as a faculty chaperone on this trip. I have taught history at Cape Henry for 5 years, and I also graduated from the School and participated in a few Nexus trips during that time. As a "learner," I love studying history and culture. As a teacher, it is such a unique opportunity to be able to step outside of the classroom and work with students in authentic, hands-on experiences.

My primary goal for the trip is that the students are safe, healthy, and able/willing to push themselves outside of their comfort zones. I know that our leadership team is equally committed to these things and I am excited to work with them! On a personal level, this is the first time that I will experience rugged travel like this. Throughout the trip, I anticipate that I will learn to "simplify" the way that I live on a day-to-day basis; in doing so, I hope to reflect on what lessons I can carry home with me.

Looking forward to what I know will be an amazing experience!

[post_content] => Hi everyone!! My name is Nicole and I will be attending Davidson College in the fall! I'm super excited about this trip because I first-handedly am impacted on a daily basis by the importance of cultural awareness. My parents are from Ukraine and it's amazing to see how much they learn about American culture to this day, after living here for 25 years, and how much I learn from them about my heritage. I'm also excited and a little nervous for this trip because I have never traveled anywhere and had to mentally engage as much as I will have to on this trip and I am very excited and up for the challenge. Most of my trips have been leisure so this will be totally different and I am looking forward to pushing myself to limits on this trip! My goal for this trip is to leave with a new understanding of not only the Indonesian culture and a newfound perspective, but also a deeper awareness of myself and my purpose. This will definitely be a mental challenge but I am up for the task and excited for all of the memories to come!

Hi everyone!! My name is Nicole and I will be attending Davidson College in the fall! I’m super excited about this trip because I first-handedly am impacted on a daily basis by the importance of cultural awareness. My parents are from Ukraine and it’s amazing to see how much they learn about American culture to this […]

[post_content] => Hello everyone!! My name is Allie Benedetto and I can't wait to be in Indonesia. I'm very excited to observe the different lifestyles and cultures that make up this unique country. This will be my first time traveling to Asia so I'm excited to face new challenges and enjoy this opportunity in a way I have not been able to before. I like to learn from new experiences and partake in activities outside my comfort zone to learn more about myself and expand my horizons. I love being outside and doing outdoor activities with friends. At school, I've tried many sports, such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and swim (and am quite average at all of them), but I enjoy being part of a team and learning new skills I can take with me off the field (or pool). My favorite class this year has been anatomy and I hope to study medicine in the future. Next year, I will be attending Tulane University and am very excited. My goal is to take on every opportunity that presents itself even if it is something very new or scary. See you all soon!

[post_content] => Hi everyone!! My name is Madison but I go by Maddy. I'm a senior at Cape Henry and I dance, sing, and play basketball. I am, as my post title suggests, very excited to go to Indonesia this June. I can't wait to experience a new culture and get out of my comfort zone. I really love understanding new perspectives so I'm hoping that I'll be able to do that in Indonesia. I'll be attending the University of Virginia next year and I'm really happy that my last school experience will be such a memorable one with such great people. Our class and this group specifically shares a very strong connection so I think that will help us while we are traveling in a new country. I can't wait to experience Indonesia!!!

[post_content] => Greetings friends and family, my name is Clay Willis and I cannot wait to experience the beautiful land of Indonesia.  I play baseball, soccer, and swim and I enjoy doing activities outdoors.  When asked to describe myself I gravitate towards the words "spontaneously adventurous".  I am most looking forward to the trek and the snorkeling and I am most worried about the inevitable dangers such as the zika virus, large snakes, other dangerous animals, and large crevices.  I am also looking forward to trying the Indonesian food because it looks yummy.  I have traveled to various countries in Latin and South America but this will be my first time in the Eastern hemisphere.  I can't wait to meet everyone and to have an awesome trip!

[post_content] => Hey everyone!!! My name is Cate Woodward and I am very excited to be traveling with you all to Indonesia in June. I am going to American University in Washington DC next fall and I am studying international relations and human rights; and I am very excited. I love learning and experiencing new cultures so this trip is going to mean a lot to me. I have already traveled to Peru, Panama, Costa Rica, and Israel. I love hanging out with my friends and being outside. I work at a local restaurant and I am a member or multiple clubs at school. I am a senior in high school at the moment and I am very sad to leave my class because I believe we have a very special unconventional relationship. I am also very excited for the trip because I love all the people who are going and it is going to be a great way to end our time in high school together. This trip is going to be the furthest I have ever traveled from home and I am extremely ready to test my limits and enjoy myself. I am very afraid of flying in planes but I think it is a fear I can easily overcome because the benefits outweigh the costs. I look forward to enjoyable trip with you all!
