[post_content] => Dear families and friends,

It's our final hours in Delhi, and we’re spending some time reflecting on what it means to come home and to communicate this experience with loved ones back home. It can be hard to articulate and put into words such a big experience, and each person has a different way of sharing their stories. Below, you’ll see how the students have started taking a stab at answering what may be the most common question: “How was India?”

From the instructors’ side, we are grateful to have been given this time with your children/relatives/friends. It’s such a privilege to be able to do this work, and we couldn’t do it without your support and trust in sending your loved ones to spend time with us. We are hopeful that your reunion is joyful and that you can admire how much your child has learned and grown. We are optimistic about keeping in touch and continuing to follow along their journeys, glad to have gotten to be a small part of their path.

Warm regards from humid Delhi,

North India 4-week instructor and students

-----------------

How was India?

One word:

Eye-opening (x2)

Different

Amazing (x2)

Nice

Experiences

Trekkable, cool, Himalayaish

Great

Unexpected

Good

Complex

One sentence:

Great, I learned a lot, met really amazing people; it’s really like Mars, it’s cool.

Completely unlike what you think of when India comes to mind, but unbelievable regardless.

Unlike anything I’d ever seen or done.

From the people to the surroundings, it was beautiful and eye-opening while also challenging and constantly moving at times.

It was a beautiful and perspective-changing experience.

It was a really wonderful way to travel and see another part of the world.

It was an eye-opening, humbling, and inspiring experience.

It was amazing and completely different than anything I’ve ever thought or done.

The Himalayas were so beautiful.

I got to see and trek in the Himalayas.

It was an adventure to an other-worldly place.

A few sample paragraphs

This trip was completely unlike what you think of when India comes to mind, but it was unbelievable nonetheless. We did some pretty incredible things, like sleep outside at 16,000 ft, have tea with Himalayan families, cross passes taller than any part in the continental United States, dance on the streets of Delhi, and embrace an alternative lifestyle.

Just a quick note to let you know that the North India 4-week students made it to the airport and will be taking off on their flight to Newark very soon. Here's one final picture of the group at the airport before heading through security. We'll post another update once they land in Newark. Thanks again for following along on our journey.

[post_content] => this trip has had many ups and downs. Although there were many struggles inside and out, my mind has been opened to the many possibilities the world has to offer and how big this planet really is. I saw many different people but all of them demonstrated extreme love and gratitude. From having tea with Himalayan families full of love and generosity to just being by ourselves in cold tents on dark nights, I really experienced the highs and lows of this course and how much this region has to offer. I am sad to be going home and realized how difficult it is to say goodbye to a place that holds so many emotions and memories and shows so much love and generosity. I will really miss Ladakh and I hope to be fortunate enough to revisit this area soon.

[post_content] => This trip has been eye-opening and beautiful while challenging and always moving. From trekking to over 17,600 feet to eating vegetables previously harvested from fields in which we helped work one day to communicating with smiles and gestures, there has been constant adapting and learning both mentally and physically. There is something strengthening about seeing the sunlight slowly touch the snowy mountain peaks in the background and the brown hills in proximity. There is something instilling about seeing people hard at work in bustling markets, in villages, and in the mountains with general positivity and with unsurmountable hospitality. There is something humbling about finding joy in seeing toilet paper in the bathroom and about people hard at work for theirs and others' well-beings and for an education. Appreciations for the rawness of life, for stability and certainty, for the present moment and people, and for the natural world have increased and continue to resound.

[post_content] => Ladakh has given me a whole new meaning to the word hospitable. The people that we met were always willing to give us the best and put us first. The mountains here are breath-taking and the people that live there are wonderful. India has taught me many things from learning to let go and the simple life lesson of compassion. The mountains have taught me to push myself thus I have changed for the better. If you ever get the chance to go to Ladakh go and when you are there take a deep breath and live in the moment. Take a deep breath and meet the people, learn about their life. Learn about their ambitions, their struggles, and what makes them happy. India has been an amazing place and I want to come back with all my heart. A piece of my heart will always be here resting in the mountains. This trip has opened my eyes for the better. I have met so many people here and hope to cross paths with them.

[post_content] => Hello family and friends,

Our 4-week journey through Northern India is almost finished, and we just landed in Delhi yesterday morning, the noisy, busy, and humidly sticky city a shock to the system after the peacefulness and cool, dry air of the high Himalaya. There have been many highlights of the month, but we wanted to post a few photos from our latest trek, which took the group up and over the 17,600 foot pass of Diggar La. It was a tremendous accomplishment to get all 12 of our students up and over the pass, and to have each thrive in this physically challenging environment. We're so proud of them, and know that they'll be thrilled to share their stories with you when they  land at home shortly.

Warm mountain greetings,

Christy, John, & Thinlas

[post_content] => At 18 I first landed in the Nepali Himalaya, butterflies fluttering wildly in my stomach as I deliberately adjusted to the sight of lung-ta flapping in the monsoon winds.

At 19 I returned to the Ladakhi Himalaya, heart racing excitedly as I effortlessly became synchronized with the sounds of the coursing rivers and cooing livestock that create the melody of life throughout these jagged mountains.

There is something intensely compelling- perhaps even magical-that drives me to seek growth, ask large questions, and be unapologetically vulnerable when yanked into the great Himalayan embrace. Somehow, it feels as if the rough, unforgiving landscape forces me to soften internally- rethreading notions of compassion, laughter and play back into my daily life.

Perhaps this stems from the fact that each and every time I glance upward at the 6,000 meter peaks that form the spine of this high-desert landscape- what our lovely Ladakhi instructor laughingly calls "hills"- I am instantly dwarfed in size, along with the size of my worries, burdens and complaints.

Briefly put, I am deeply grateful for these mountains and the experiences and emotions I've woven deep into the Himalayan fabric throughout the past two summers.

These peaks have jutted deep into the crevices of my brain, ripping through the cobwebs that cloak forgotten senses of adventure, insatiable curiosity and childlike naïveté.

Their valleys have acted as buckets, indiscriminately collecting the tears of grief and bliss that have rolled down my sand-crusted, sun-blistered cheeks.

I am deeply grateful for the people I love most who support me and understand my need to get lost in this landscape, falling deeper in love with its people and their warm, welcoming energy.

Truth be told, mom and dad, I'm not ready to come home. A couple of weeks ago, when I threw back my head--hair dripping with the cold stream water that etched a snakelike pattern next to our tent--exhaled, burst into a wide smile and told my tent mate: "Wow, I could live like this for a while" I wasn't kidding.

The other day, I confronted my instructors with an ineloquently worded question that has been in the forefront of my mind during every transitionary period in my life, no matter how major or minor the shift.

"How do you get good at saying goodbye to things that you're not ready to leave?"

John let out a sigh of sorts and then proceeded to say something along the lines of "You just have to go," putting his left arm in the air and simulating a wave motion, adding that "life is like a wave you have to continue to ride out."

So mom and dad, I'm anxiously riding that wave all the way back to Chicago, back into the familiarity of your loving embraces and into the comfort of the home we share. I'm so eager to sit at our kitchen counter and attempt to craft some semblance of a pseudo-Himalayan landscape through stories and photos, even if only for a fleeting moment.

To my peers and instructors: thank you for pushing me to express my emotions with no inhibitions, for trekking alongside me when I was ill and for letting me drink from your bottles when I was too lazy to carry my own. For pestering me to take care of my sunburn and for finally-days later-assuring me that the skin on my face no longer resembles plastic. For letting me listen to your most personal anecdotes and for trusting me enough to know that your stories will never slip past my lips. For learning with me, laughing at me and caring for me. For letting me plant the seeds of each of our friendships in a landscape that is as strong and humbling as the Himalaya. This land is powerful.

See, at 18 I learned how to fall into and out of love in these mountains; how to mend deep tears in my mental fabric, how to ask heavy questions and how to laugh without boundaries.

And again, at 19 these mountains granted me the space I needed to remind myself of how far I've come and how far I have to go. I've learned how to more effectively engage with others, express gratitude better and saunter more mindfully towards my future, actively I'm pursuit of what moves me in this world...and move I must.

Notes from the field have been few and far between for the past two and half weeks. And, truthfully, that's not likely to change over the next few days. The team is methodically making their way over hills (BIG ONES) and dales (DEEP ONES) to the Nubra Valley over a weeklong period. Images won't do the land justice, but here are a few pictures to give you a sense of the scale and beauty of the Trans-Himalaya.

More news to come.
