[post_content] => Tranquilo. A calm and peaceful state. One in which the people of Nicaragua have seemed to master. Every person that I have met encompasses this one simple word. Tranquilo. It is the simplicity of this word that perfectly  mirrors the lifestyle in Nicaragua. Life, I have learned, is not about how many things you have but rather the quality of life you are living. Having a steam shower does not enhance one's life, a plastic bucket and bowl will do the same job. Now I am not saying that as soon as I get home I will be going out into the garden with my bucket and Dr. Bronner's soap, all I'm saying is that luxeries like fancy showers are not what make life beautiful. Before this trip I was so worried that I had underpacked my seventy liter Osprey sack, but after a month in Nicaragua I have realized you only need a few things to love a group of fifteen strangers, an incredible country, and life itself.

[post_content] => We awoke to the sound of frogs in the nearby pond. The sun was shining in on us through our almost non existant walls. By 6:45am we were all up and ready to go in the main dining area awaiting our tasks for the day. For the people working in the kitchen, it meant a day of washing and chopping to prepare breakfast and lunch for the day. Then there were those in the nursery who were taking care of the young plants and planting more seedlings as well. Those who were working in the garden spent their time composting and weeding around the larger and more mature plants. Last but not least, those in the field were planting trees as well as peeling cinnamon and harvesting bananas. After we finished our jobs and ate lunch we made our way down a long dirt path out of Bona Fide and onto a more central road. On that road we walked in the hot humid sun to a place where they weave baskets. We were taught by an elderly man who goes to one of the volcanos to collect material with which they use to weave baskets. Him and his family showed us their long crafted technique and taught us how to make our own. After we had all made our baskets, which are all different and unique, we headed back to Bona Fide to enjoy one of our last nights in Nicaragua together.

[post_content] => It's a travel day in Nicaragua! The group mood is bittersweet. A new location means new sights, new experiences and tons of excitement, but first we have to say goodbye to El Lagartillo, where we have two weeks' memories with our host families. Our original plan was to take public transportation (3 buses and a ferry, starting with 5:30 am bus out of El Lagartillo), but a problem with our connection in Managua means a departure time 3 hours later, as we take a faster, though less adventurous, private microbus. Our new schedule gives us more Z's, more time to say last minute goodbyes, and in my case, a chance to do all the last minute packing I should have done the night before. Last minute photos, trips to the bathroom, and an early microbus disrupt our morning meeting, and all too soon (I should have asked my host mother more questions about her job!) we wave goodbye to homes slipping away on the other side of the clouded glass.

We arrived safely at Mitch's farm on the island of Ometepe (nahuatl for two peaks). Highlights from the 9 hour journey include lunch in Leon and a beautiful ferry ride to our destination in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. The twin volcanoes and beautiful water breath of new adventure and new memories to be remembered when we say goodbye in a short five days.

Hey everyone, today was our last full day in El Lagartillo and we spent the day taking our last classes and cooking with our Spanish groups and teachers. We each made a dish and enjoyed them with our host families and new friends at the party. I think everyone will be sad to be leaving this place; we have all connected with our host families and formed relationships that we will miss. As we head to Ometepe island tomorrow , I hope we can remember everything we learned here and apply it . Although leaving will be tough, I think we are all excited to head to the island and see what the rest of the trip has to offer!

[post_content] => We're finishing one of our last dinners together, and very close to our table reads a quote by Wendell Berry:  "A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared and the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other".

I think of all the places we have seen together and all the possibilities of experience that we brought to this trip with us; the different ways in which every one has engaged in it; the ways our limits have been tested, and how many of them have expanded. I think of the people that have opened their doors to let you out (your parents, to whom I've grown in respect for the enormous challenge that is letting you discover your ways in the world) and those who opened them to let you in to briefly experience their lives with them. And I think of all that you might remember years from now, what you might tell people about that one summer that you went to Nicaragua. And  all the little things that will be forgotten. To the spirit of those little things I want to dedicate this yak, to the laughter that they gave us, the joy or the worries, to their power to bring us closer:

To you singing Guerrero del amor in your last night in El Lagartillo; to the ball rolling on the floor on our first volleyball match; to the first time whe shared how our poops were doing; to the panic of the scorpions taking over the world ;)  to the buddy system, so we shall never lose Ava again. To Mitch's honest answers to many questions you didn' t want to hear the answers to. To Diriang getting confused in the games. To silent ball. To quoting Oliver! To letting your bodies win. To deciding to stick together no matter what. To the cook crews and their delicious creations. To all the miniature dinosaur pets we dream of having and all the dogs you couldn't pet. To your first nacatamales and all the tortillas that you made. To all the intentions that were set and their respective punctuation marks. To gallopinto and the best bananas ever! To the simple pleasure of a shower and the warmth of a good conversation. And last, to all the small changes that will now unfold!

"Can I make one?" I ask in even slower and more cautious Spanish than usual. In our first two weeks in Nicaragua, I had already heard many people talk about a tortilla's great personal importance, although their precise symbolism varied from one person to the next. For many, tortillas spoke of love, pride, home, rich and uncorrupted traditions, and, of course, a happy stomach. But others were reminded of machismo, of how only women make tortillas, of how every tortilla is a tiny concession to the hierarchy. Regardless of which truth resonated with any one person, I felt that the tortilla was such an important part of life that, if I wanted to claim any authenticity to my Nicaraguan experience, I would have to make one myself.
Maritza, my host mother, seems a little surprised when I ask, but she says with a laugh, "You can try, but it is very difficult for the men." I dip my fingertips in the dish on my right, then rub the water over my hands, trying to look like I know what I am doing. I pulled off a little ball of the masa I had ground moments before. I watch as Maritza presses out the masa on a clear paper mat. She pats quickly twice or three times toward the edge with her right hand, where her left hand walls the masa into a rounded, smooth edge. Within fifteen seconds, she has a thin but even layered spread in a perfect circle over the mat, perched on the edge but never spilling over. She peels off the paper, hands it to me, and lays her tortilla-to-be on the smoking comal. The comal is a very shallow clay dish that looks something like a pan with no handle. The wood fire burns hot below the clay, and the smell of warm corn tickles my nose.

Hey guys,
Today after our classes and lunch in el largatillo, we met at the library to go into achuapa, a larger city about 30 minutes away. A small truck came to collect us- we sat in the back in the open air, the sun beating down on us. Every person we saw on the rocky clay roads waved at us, smiling almost as much as we were.
We arrived at a local cooperative first, where some of our host fathers (including mine) work to create sesame, honey, grape, and hibiscus products to sell both locally and internationally. We toured through room after room filled with barrels of sesame oil in different stages, headed in part to London in their partnership with the Body Shop. They system was much larger and widespread than my host father had humbly explained to me at the beginning of my stay.
After a tour and tasting of some products, we walk to an Internet cafe. Although we are mainly here to fill out midcourse forms, I know most of us are itching to get in touch with you guys back home. As much fun as we are having, it still seems like it's been a long time since we've seen you all. But even so, as we head back to el largatillo laughing and chatting the whole way, it doesn't seem seem like we'll be here long enough.
