People come to your country for seasons and reasons,

Embracing you as you are, with all your pros and cons.

Some come in their teens, twenties, thirties and beyond,

Exploring, learning, teaching you things that make you bond.

Once they leave, they make you sneeze for more than three times a day.

Sneezing once means God keeps an eye on you, they say;

If it is twice, your ancestors are protecting you so much,

And if three times, you are missed by people who are dear to you a bunch.

Sneezing is normally healthy and a sign of care and benedictions.

And like everything, it can be subject to multiple interpretations.

But if you have the superstition, discipline or the drive to bless,

Then the rewards  to make yourselves feel great are endless.

Now, let me use the subject "I" to find the explanation for  my sneezes last night and today.

I have sincerely sneezed a lot, till my right eye turned as red as the chili sauce called sakay.

That's a symptom of how much our quality time as a group is dearly missed

And I would like to let you know that it's been day two that I have sensed it.

Here is still sneezing a lot and wishing you a bright present and future.

Whatever the season, may you all achieve what your hearts desire by nature.

Indeed, congratulations to all the instructors and students.

I hope that you will have good memories and stories to share with your family and friends.

Our 6 week journey has stood the test of challenges: we nailed it!

Whichever way you take in the future, be happy in your own merit.

Madagascar was the first country on this planet to welcome me to life just like a sage.

Thank you Madagascar for letting me be in the good hands of the kindest people teaching me how to read at an early age, to speak and play with kids from different neighborhoods in towns and villages.

Thank you for being so generous with your space where personal space does not even exist in your language.

Thank you for answering my questions whenever I am so curious about anything.

You have opened so many doors that can serve as a place for protection in case you need, or people to accompany, to hang out with and to watch people passing

Your time is not based on watches but on the sun, so there is always time for everything.

Thank you for sharing your beauty and your biodiversity that can blow our mind.

On the outside, you are endowed and charmed with endemic species of different kind.

On the inside, you are just rich with natural resources that you let us find.

To me, you are a unique place where I can live and work with people of different walks of life and nationalities.

You are so hospitable, and generous with your rice and your ranoampago or rice tea as that's part of your specialties.

In you, veryone is almost related as you value Fihavanana which is a sense of togetherness or brotherhood.

Even loved ones are reunited through an event called famadihana which is the turning of the bones during which the living ones rewrap the ancestors' bones in a new silk shroud to be put in the family tomb in the neighborhood.

Thank you Madagascar for opening up your heart and being kind to let people go back and forth.

Thank you for the bikes, Taxibrousses, motorbikes, cars and planes operated by kind hearted people who assured my arrivals and departures from the south to the north.

Thank you also for the roads  taking me and others to different places that have shaped my present me.

Especially for letting us work together within you and regardless of our respective manners and personalities, you have been a home sweet home for many.

I had been in and out of this room for the last 12 hours and never once was I alone and never once was it quiet. . .The students have been gone for 15 minutes and I already miss them.

We had a chance to have a wonderful last meal tonight at the old central railway station in Antananarivo and took the opportunity for about 150 group photos. This one was my favorite.

All of your adventurers and inspired travelers are on their way home along with instructor, Rasheika. More soon from Antananarivo.

Thank You Madagascar

You know, my life could never be the same after meeting you that cold Tuesday night at Antananarivo in the dark, small “terminal building.” But, you are unlike any other places, you give me stories of not big, but small things. Time passed by slowly, but you made life more than just a flash in front of my eyes. You should know deep down in my heart, I LOVE YOU. I love the smoke from the burning charcoals, the diesel smell from the slow and almost tipping Taxi Brousses, the friendly honk, the salamas, and the weird stares. You are neither fancy nor organized nor clean, and not even warm in the highlands. But, honestly, its ok. Because you took me in with the warm hands and the smile on your faces ensured me that I am always welcomed here.

Thank you, Madagascar. You know, if I haven’t read the statics, I wouldn’t know this is the place where every 3 in 5 people live with less than 2 dollars a day. You are different. More than anything, you give me a chance to learn, to meet, and to just be there. People are nice and approachable. It was slow, but happened. Sometimes things can be strange and strangely cheap. But, honestly, I liked it. Don’t Scst Awa!

You struggle with protecting the environment and making a living. Yet, few see the living. People complain about you cutting down trees and being ruthless to the mother earth, but you are the only one who has to go home and cook with the wood, and only the wood. People think you are crazy to ride in those Taxi Brouses driven by the mad man, but you, only you know that’s the only way to get around. People think you are lazy, but how do they know the long hard night and the early mornings you had.

Madagascar has taught me how to form meaningful connections without words. It has introduced me to hundreds of the kindest people you could ever find. It has shown me natural beauty is found everywhere. Madagascar has inspired me to become a traveler, not a vacationer. It has opened my eyes to life outside of America. Madagascar has given me the opportunity to absorb into its people and live life as they do. It has shown me how to kill chickens and milk cows. It has taught me to be grateful for what I have, but not pity those who are viewed as less fortunate. Madagascar has exposed the everyday biases thrust upon it by Western culture.
