Wazzup friends and relatives,

We have just wrapped up x-phase which is the student led portion of the trip.  It took place in Kampot which is a beautiful riverside town with many westerners.  This was a bit of a culture shock after being on an inland for over a week interacting with no one but locals.

During x-phase, the students are fully in charge: we created the schedule, managed the budget, and handled communication for all appointments and reservations. Although not everything went to plan, we ended up having an amazing time. A couple of my personal favorite events were when we visited a cave and were able to swing from vines hanging inside, and when we went on a gorgeous 6 mile hike to a secluded waterfall where we could swim and rock climb. Overall, x-phase was a great learning experience about being thorough and yet flexible in planning. I think I can speak for the entire group when I say we have gained the fundamental skills of being successful independent travelers.

We are now moving into the transference portion of our trip and then we will be home to share stories and laughs . We are so grateful to you all for supporting us on this marvelous journey. See you soon!

Hello peoples!

I am writing you on the last night of our stay on the beautiful Rabbit Island off the coast of Cambodia. We took a splashy ride on funky fishing boats over from Kep and have been enjoying the island since. We spend our days drinking coconuts, reading, and eating... A LOT! We have also been wrapping up the course, reflecting on our journey and travels to come.

Transference consists of reviewing all that we have done on course and talking about how to transfer all of the skills and knowledge we have gained into our every day lives. We covered culture shock, communication, and the frustration of no one truly being able to understand the experience we have had. We also talk about how we will apply the information we have been given to approach situations with a new and more critical mindset. We chat about the ways different aspects of the trip have affected us as individuals and also as a group.

During these three days, we have also begun to say our goodbyes. Our final ceremony was one of the loveliest moments on our trip. We celebrated each person in the group by showing gratitude to them, going around the circle and recounting memories and stories. I cried, as did others.

On that note, we are preparing to come home and can't wait to see all of you wonderful people! Thank you for supporting us to come on this life changing adventure. Please hug us on arrival. We missed you all and we can't wait to share with you what we experienced over the past month.

-Freya

It was somewhere between the second and third step (or maybe it was the fourth and fifth), surrounded by a sea of out of time, elderly Khmer ladies doing synchronized aerobics, that it happened. I was present. For one pure second my body and mind subsided and I could feel nothing but the endless joy inside of my being. Consciousness. I have learned over the years to become aware of these moments of clarity. I looked up at the marble sky and embrace the sinking sun as she began her daily decent beyond the horizon, beyond the dark orange haze and outline of and sky scrapers.

I’m way up on top of Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium in the grand stand area. The view is stunning. To my left and right there are multiple aerobic troops all following their own commanders. All have their own personal boom boxes and are playing their own outrageous techno music. What it looks like is organised chaos. Six different aerobics classes on at the same time. It’s hypnotic. We are like ants. Arms up, then down. Step left, shuffle right. Clap. Jeez… Khmer’s love that base. Sweat pools at my temples and eventually the banks burst and rivers flow down my cheeks, following an unmapped topography I wasn’t even aware of. I watched as three swallows dive into a nearby building like fighter jets, their mission to secure their shelter for the night. From the opposite side of the stadium I spot three tiny bats, their zig-zag cookie-cutter silhouettes flapping into the dark purple abyss. Like day and night workers changing shift.

As I look to my right I catch the gaze of an overzealous Khmer grandma mid step. I mean, I have no idea if she’s a grandmother or not. Asian women (and men for that matter), age so well to me that it’s hard to tell how old anyone is. All I know is that the shallow creases on her face, only apparent when she’s concentrating, indicate time. Like tree rings I try to count and mentally calculate. Yep, grandmother. She’s wearing all blue – blue track pants, blue collared shirt, blue sneakers – it reminded me of the blue Power Ranger from my childhood. Her muscles contort to the music and while her movements, her reach, and her timing, are all far from perfect, I can tell she’s having fun. She smiles at me and I smile back. The automatic response of a nomad.

Over the past 12 months I have found myself taking part in these daily communal aerobics classes all over Asia whenever I can. I don’t know what it is. Perhaps it’s the feeling of oneness and connection, of being, literally, one moving part of a greater whole. Maybe it’s the fact that I laugh a lot. I laugh at myself as I make mistakes. I laugh at my co-instructors and the students as they fly off in the wrong direction. There’s no judgement here. We just want to do some exercise. People are wearing whatever clothes they have. Jeans, t-shirts, sweaters. I love that.

It little gems like this out of sync, outdoor, mass aerobics, that make my heart melt for this country. Cambodia, what a treat she is. I have spent more time in here in the past twelve months than anywhere else on this Earth. I have deepened my understanding for this country and its people. I am more appreciative, I am more patient, I am calmer. I have shed tears of joy and tears of sadness. I have laughed, the kind of laughter that aids muscle growth in the belly. I have been wholeheartedly adopted by a family. My sister looks to me for advice. My mother worries about my safety after dark. I know where to go for the best hot pot. I know the short cuts to the coast. Cambodia. I love this country, its people, its madness.

Jessica.

It was somewhere between the second and third step (or maybe it was the fourth and fifth), surrounded by a sea of out of time, elderly Khmer ladies doing synchronized aerobics, that it happened. Students delve into their own interests and spent time interviewing locals about their lives. Topics included access to health, gender roles, corruption and transparency, education, and the Khmer Rouge. From drawings to journal entries, we were blown away by the depth of knowledge the students gathered.

Dear families,

We've been having an amazing time on the island of Koh K'sach Tonlea for the past eight days and we are all sad to say goodbye to our host families. It has been incredible getting to experience some of what Cambodians' daily lives are like, and being on this island has taught us so much about the importance of mindfulness and community. We've also been continuously inspired by the resilience of the islanders. During the rule of the Khmer Rouge, the island was a "prison without walls" for the widows of men murdered by the Khmer Rouge, and we had the opportunity to speak with some of the islanders who survived that period. We also held a panel with women from different generations on the island to discuss how gender roles and expectations have changed or remained the same and what needs to be done to create future gender equity. Another one of my favorite events was the bike tour of the island where we got to see some of the farming and fishing communities.

On our last day we tried to make the most of our remaining time on the island and prepared for a going-away party, where we danced and sung with the kids and families. We're excited to begin X-phase, where we will be in charge of the trip for three days in Kampot, and put all of our travel experience to use!

See you soon!
