[post_content] => 4 weeks seems so long. In our pre-course calls leading up to the course students expressed anxiety about being away from home for "such a long time!" However once you land in Rwanda those 4 weeks fly by. Its hard to process the fact that our course has come to an end.

Parents, friends and loved ones- While these 4 weeks flew by for us, perhaps they seemed like an eternity. A month away from your daughter or friend, getting the occasional field note or hastily written email. Never truly getting the full picture. When you meet your Dragons student at the airport or at home we're sure you'll want to ask them a million questions and shower them with love. Please do, but also realize that the trip isn't over for them yet. Coming home is one of the most educational parts of this course. Taking what you've learned in Rwanda and applying it to your life takes time to process. Parents/friends/loved ones- It is now your time to help our students. Ask them deep questions that go beyond "what was the food like?" Sit with them and engage in debates. Encourage your daughter/friend to truly teach you what they learned. And (arguably most importantly) give them space and time to truly process this.

Blair, Jessie, Rikka, Erika, Sydney, Maria, Noemie and Jacqueline-

We can not thank you enough for sharing this experience with us. You all showed so much courage and we are SO proud of you. We will miss you dearly. Please keep us in your lives and know that we are always here for you. It was a true blessing to spend these past 4 weeks with you all.

Much love,

Hilary, Helen, Cam and Zack

Almost 4 weeks have already passed here in Rwanda. Its amazing how quickly it has all gone by. In just a few days we will be on a plane heading back to our respective homes (with the exception of Blair and Sydney who will be staying on in Rwanda for a few weeks).  For these last couple days together we will be on the shores of Lake Kivu in the town of Kibuye. During Transference we will focus our time on helping the students process their experience here in Rwanda. What lessons did Rwanda teach you? What stories will you bring home? How will you use what you learned here in Rwanda in your life back home?

What has Cyenkwanzi taught me?
During my first rural home-stay in Cyenkwanzi I learned so much, especially from my host family. They didn't speak any English so the neighbors would often come over to help translate for the first few days. But when the neighbors couldn't come over it would just be and them alone. At first it would felt like this dreadful silence at the dinner table but soon we learned how to communicate in ways that weren't verbal. We would mime, draw, and act out what we were trying to say which often filled the conversation with bursts of laughter. Though at times it was silent during meals, I learned how to deal with silence and be okay with the fact that nothing was being said because people were just thinking about their days and enjoying their meals. I have also learned my boundaries through this home-stay because the family itself had five kids and two parents but guests would constantly be streaming in and out. Because of that I never had any time to be by myself and I had to constantly be "on" which got exhausting but I finally learned that sometimes I have to go into my room and journal and find time for myself.  Overall, my time in Cyenkwanzi was memorable, filled with many life lessons, and my host family was so welcoming and made it feel like home.

Here we will meet with a Peace Corps Volunteer working in a local Burundian refugee camp, make imigongo artwork, and hike to a local waterfall all while prepping for our excursion to Akagera and Transference on the shores of Lake Kivu. Transference is a time of reflection where students talk about how to transfer home the things they've learned here in Rwanda. The students are growing in a multitude of ways and we are thrilled to have played a part in it. What a fun final week ahead!!!

[post_content] => Our time in Byumba has been short but incredibly rewarding. We spent Saturday with the Gihembe English club playing fun games and engaging in exciting debates. Here are some photos of our time with the club.

We now head to the rural community of Cyenkwanzi where we will be until Thursday the 21st. On the 21st we will travel to Kirehe. Kirehe is the community where our local instructor Helen Uwimana lives and works. In Kirehe we will spend 2 nights before going on a safari in Akagera National Park!Screen shot 2016-07-17 at 5.16.31 PM

It’s a bittersweet moment for me when we’re taking our family photos and saying our goodbyes… because it isn’t until this moment when I truly feel a part of the family.Screen shot 2016-07-17 at 5.11.25 PM

[post_content] => To accurately describe my second homestay, I have entitled it with “Night of the Living Rats”. After my valiant instructors rescued me from the situation unharmed, I was relocated to a homestay with my peer, Jessie. I was both nervous and intrigued to see what this new home would hold (more so if it would be anything like my previous house). The results were overwhelming. My homestay father, Emmanuel, greeted me with open, kind arms. Although he spoke very little English, we explored other means of communication. Together, we would draw, dance, eat, wash clothes, and shared limited conversation. Emmanuel would quite literally blow on my porridge to cool it down. He was so kind to the two of us, two strangers in his home. My love for homestays was restored.
