farewell for now, and thanks for following the field notes from peru 6 week.

The complexity and magnificence of the views from our trek could momentarily take me out of my own body and distract me from the race of my heartbeat and the trouble I was having with my breathing. The scenery allowed me to push myself on, even when I felt like I was running out of air. I felt honored to be able to walk among these mountains. I don’t think I can even begin to comprehend their significance to locals and their power. I felt like they put me under a trance. I couldn’t help but be in awe, but I was able to withdraw from my own thoughts to notice that my friend, Kevin, was having a really hard time with the hike.

During all four days of our trek, Kevin was dealing with stomach problems, which are extremely uncomfortable to have in the Andes without a bathroom or a bed. He hadn’t had an appetite in the past few days and was therefore feeling entirely weak and empty. The altitude and the physical demand of the hike were challenging for the healthiest members of the group, so I couldn’t imagine how he was feeling. Thankfully, for the majority of the hike, he’d been able to ride on our emergency horse, but we had arrived at too steep of a portion for the horse to continue carrying Kevin. We were about an hour from the pass when Kevin dismounted the horse. As a friend of Kevin, I felt as though it were my responsibility to walk alongside of him and offer any support I could.

At the bottom of every hill, Kevin would say he needed the horse, claiming that he couldn’t make it up any higher. Colton and I pushed him to keep his chest up and just keep on making baby steps. He made it to the top of every hill and slowly, he stopped saying he couldn’t get up the next hill. We told Kevin stories and sang songs from Shrek to keep his mind occupied, knowing that the only thing holding Kevin back from succeeding at this hike was his mental confidence. There was a part of the hike where the three of us, separated a bit from the rest of the group, decided to skip for the a couple steps of the hike, Our momentum was high. I was thriving off of their energy and our success as we continued hiking.

At my high school, I am usually so consumed with my individual challenges that I'm never entirely in tune with what my friends are overcoming or working on. Having to work in a group on this trip without any of the normal distractions of phones, music, and daily homework, really opened my eyes to the effects you have on the people around you. One smile, upbeat song, or positive comment can entirely alter the mood of another´s day. I am grateful for that hike for presenting us all with challenges and for Kevin, for being able to see himself as the strong, wonderful member of the group that we all see him as.

Ausangate was tough. It was hard for many reasons. Sickness, group tensions, and the overall physical challenge. However, nothing compares to when you are on top of that pass. At 17,200 feet, we got there. The highest point we would be. I had been on a horse for this section. I was sick, struggling with altitude, and very dehydrated. I felt guilty. The next day for our pass at 16,000 feet I was determined to get to it on foot. So I did. I pushed through despite how bad I was feeling, and theres no way to compare it. Surrounded by beautiful terrain, silence, and amazing people.

[post_content] => During Transference, we´ve been given a lot of time to reflect on the past 6 weeks. So much has happened; it´s hard to know how to compress all my experiences into something I can describe to other people, and learn from for myself as well.

We did a writing workshop where we write 30 words about a meaningful experience and then compress it down to 6. It´s a good exercise in being succinct and truly thinking about what´s important to convey. I wrote about my participation in the Pachamanca in Queros, the ceremonial slaughter of a sheep.

It started as:

My knees sink into its thick wool, pinning it down. Without hesitation, Lorenzo saws its throat and its life pours out in a scarlet river. Instantly, sheep transforms to meat.

I compressed it to:

Throat opens. Scarlet life gushes. Meat.

Personally, I think the 6 word version packs more punch. The most profound concept for me about the Pachamanca was how quickly a living animal is transformed into meat for consumption. I think the brevity of the 6 words mirrors how unsettlingly rapid this transformation. Just a quick slice of the throat and an animal is no longer an animal; it´s food. I´d never been a part of slaughtering an animal, so I think it was really important for me to see where the meat I eat comes from.

I've also had time to reflect on our trek in Ausangate. I´ve been on beautiful mountains, but Ausangate was different. Everything was more vibrant, the energy more palpable. I´ve never been in such a hyperbolic place. The stars were brighter than I've ever seen them, like salt spilled on black marble, with the milky way  slashed down the middle. I´ve never felt colder; Ausangate´s icy fingers pierced right through my 6 layers and held me in a frigid embrace. I've never seen more colorful hills; some were cayenne pepper-red marbled with green and some were wheat-gold streaked with blue. The water was freezing cold; the sun was fiercely hot. Ausangate´s beauty isn´t just pretty; it's powerful. I've never felt a place´s beauty more so than I have at Ausangate. Apu Ausangate is a sacred mountain in Peru, and I can see why. It's energy is tangible.

Reflections During Transference

Karly Chin,SUMMER: Peru 6-Week

Description

During Transference, we´ve been given a lot of time to reflect on the past 6 weeks. So much has happened; it´s hard to know how to compress all my experiences into something I can describe to other people, and learn from for myself as well. We did a writing workshop where we write 30 words about […]

We had an exercise at transference were we thought of a handful of impactful moments on our course and then we chose one to write 30 words on which at first was already difficult because i started above 50 words and cut it down to 30 then we were told to trim it even further to 20 and later again to 10 finally to 6 words. That is my end result of 30 to 6 words. Who i write about is a little girl who sold me bread with her mother and older sister, The entire idea of her helping out her mother and having such responsibilities at that age stuck with me and reminded me of home of my sisters and own mother.

[post_content] => To my dearest Grandpa,

It has been nearly 3 years since you've passed. I still think about the phone call I got from my dad telling me what had happened by accident because he didn't know I didn't know. A lot has happened in the past 3 years but I think this is the perfect time for me to talk to you. I just spent the most amazing 6 weeks in Peru with the weirdest craziest and most caring people I have every met. I went into the program thinking that everybody was going to be 6"11, weigh 200 pounds and be professional athletes and adventurer/hikers. Little did I know that some of them were very athletic but a lot of them were kind of like me.

There were times on the course where I had a lot of trouble, like when we were trekking. I felt like I couldn't do it and then began to put myself down, telling myself that I wasn't good at anything and that I never would be. I looked back to all the times I've done that and I realized how many times it had occurred. Thoughts would pop into my head like "you'll never get into college", "you're not as smart as they are", "you can't do anything" but these thoughts were not only ideas, I began interpreting them concrete facts. But I had never had those kind of "thoughts" about anything I had done on this trip before because I had never done anything like this before. I started thinking for a second about all the people I love and how strong they had been. I thought of my mom and my dad and how hard they work to put me through school, to pay for this program, and how much they've supported me, how they nod their head when I tell them I want to dye my hair purple or get another piercing that just to be nice. I thought about what it must have felt when they lost their parents. I thought about how I would feel if that had happened to me. And then I thought about you. I thought about when I first found out that you had been diagnosed with cancer. I thought about when I asked if you would be ok. I remembered how happy I was when I heard we would be seeing you and you were feeling better. I thought about when I had to come visit you in the hospital and how you tried to pretend like nothing was happening. I thought about all the pain you had gone through. I thought about all the pain I went through when I found out. I thought about how strong I had been and knew there was more left in me.

Grandpa, you are one of the most amazing, strong, inspiring, perseverant person I have ever met and one of the only things I would reproach you on would be your poor choice in female companions. I thought about you a lot on this trip. You have been a symbol of hope and strife for me on this trip. When we reached the 17200 foot pass in Ausangate, I thought about you. I thought about how you had helped me get there and that I was closer to you than I had ever been before. I sat next to Leah, our instructor, on the warm ground, observing everything that was around me. There were so many mountains that all differed from one another in shape, size, color and story. There was so much to see but all I could hear was silence. I thought about you, sitting next to me, asking me about how I have been. So thank you, for always being there for me even if it was only in spirits, thank you for inspiring me not only in Peru but in the future. I will always remember you and your kindness and I hope that someday, somebody will remember me the same way.

I love you always. xoxo your favorite Erikita
