[post_content] => Dear Dragons friends and family,

We have been in touch with the instructor team, and the group has wrapped up a powerful 4 weeks of learning and adventure through some of the most beautiful and diverse parts of Peru.  It has been quite a journey, and the students look forward to sharing stories with loved ones very soon.  They are currently boarding their plane in Cusco, and will have a 4 hour layover in Lima before departing for Miami at 1:05 am local time.  We will send an update as soon as the group has landed safely in Miami tomorrow morning.

Thank you for your support in making this journey possible!

Best wishes,

Julianne

[post_content] => Oh boy, where to start?

I can hardly believe that there are only two days left before I'm back on the plane, homeward bound. Part of me wishes that this trip would last just a tiny bit longer, but the other part of me can't wait to be back in Canada with my family and iPhone. Honestly, I'm surprised at how little I missed easy internet access. I missed music more, but it wasn't unbearable.

All of the people on this trip are as different as they are alike. I noticed this before, and I concluded that this program is the opposite of high school in some ways. In high school, everybody has a variety of interests, abilities, and goals, but are united by proximity (or wealth, in the case of private schools). On this program, we are all united by common interests: a passion for travel, a desire for adventure, and a willingness to leave our comfort zone and explore what else is out there. The world is a big place, and there's so much to see. Sometimes it's overwhelming how big the world is (and how small it can feel at the same time).

I wonder whether life is what happens when we break routine, or whether life is the routine and when we break it is what an adventure is. Maybe it's just wordplay and it all just adds up to the same thing. Maybe it deserves a little further thought.

I'll put aside the hoity-toity thought process and reminiscing for half a moment while I focus on the concrete details.

A few of us slept out under the stars last night, squinting against the weird green lights surrounding our campsite, Machu Pichu and Wayna Pichu mountains looming above us against the partly cloudy sky. We woke up before sunrise, at about 4:30 or so, and started our hike up. I slept in my clothes the night before, so all I did was change from my purple striped "Peru pants" to my filthy green quick-dry ones and I was ready to go. Maybe I should have brushed my teeth, but I really wasn't feeling it. I sat on the swingset by the campsite and hummed a country song that always makes me think of my dad.

We hiked up the initial hour from the base to the ruins, surprised at how many other people were as crazy as we were to be up at such an ungodly hour to climb some frigging hill. The brain of my backpack comes off and can be made into a fanny pack, except it's absolutely huge when I do this (big enough for my sketchbook and water bottle and jacket), and Nandi said that it looks like I have a rump when I tie my coat to the outside. I was rocking it, plain and simple. Y'all are just jealous of my ridiculous fashion sense (by the way, Mum, one of my friends got me a new hat that I'm positive you're going to hate, I can't wait to show you).

We got up into the ruins and watched the sunrise from the lineup at the entryway, then up to Machu Pichu mountain. Oh, boy. That was a long hike. Two hours, and about a million flights of wobbly, rocky stairs. We were some of the first people up there, but there were still people there before us. I slogged along with the "slow" group, trying not to be to concerned about my pace and instead focusing on the fact that I was not  hyperventilating (in my books, that's a solid victory). I'm not sure how long it took us to get up there since I don't have a watch, but I'd guess close to two hours. We rose up above the jungle and we finally got to the top of Machu Picchu. The ruins were sprawled below us, one of the ten wonders of the ancient world, and even taller peaks rising around us on all sides. It was a phenomenal view, well worth the three hour hike to get there. I got Jackson to take a picture of me with the mountains in the background because my camera broke while we were still in the Amazon (long story short, it lied about being waterproof).

We climbed back down and I ignored the way that my legs shook under me as I trotted along by myself, encouraging the people who were on their way up. Nevertheless, I was glad that I did the hike early in the day, when it wasn't so hot out.

We had lunch outside the gates. The avacados got smashed in Calvin's bag, but we just decided that it was pre-made guacamole and scraped it onto our slices of bread, anyway. The ice cream was overpriced, but I felt very perky after lunch and ready to go for another few hours.

Our tourguide in the ruins was great. She was passionate about her job, showed us some cool temples, and had a lovely burgundy sunhat with a bow on it. She showed us the Temple of the Sun, the top of the pyramid with the sundial, the Temple of the Condor, the old waterfountains (which are still functional over five hundred years later), and I was very glad I took the tour. I love learning more about where I am.

After that, I had some time to kill, so I split off from the group, grabbed my sketchbook, and did some drawings. I'm afraid that I hardly do the ruins justice, but maybe I can go back after spending a few years at art school and try the drawings again. I got turned around in the labyrinth-like ruins before finally coming out at the entrance. I used the passport stamp on the inside cover of my sketchbook, then I started the walk back down by myself. I ran into Jackson and he powered past me because he had to do stuff. I enjoyed the first real alone time I've gotten since running into Nandi in Miami. It was nice to listen to the forest and sing "Watching the Apples Grow" without anyone around to judge me.

Now, I'm sitting at an internet cafe in the Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Pichu. My train leaves in an hour and a half. One of my friends said that this town is like Disneyland, and it really is. Everything is expensive, and it's really touristy and hokey. It feels pallour when compared to the other towns we've been to where the touristy factor is easy to escape. Despite the food being ridiculously overpriced, I managed to find a good meal for five soles tonight (eggs, rice, fried bananas, and fries), and I couldn't resist buying a few corny t-shirts. I think that corniness is fine as long as you're aware of it.

This trip has easily been the best one of my life (so far, I hope that I don't peak at age eighteen). This was honestly the perfect transition to my first year of art school. I'm in equal parts incredibly lucky to be here, while at the same time I really did work my ass off. I'm lucky that I was able to work my ass off to make this happen, how about that?

This might very well be my last post while I'm still in Peru. But on the other hand, who knows what the future holds?

Not me, that's for sure.

[post_content] => July 24th. Three days left. So close to get back home.

Yet, that does not mean that for these past 26 days we have not had a home. I feel like being a traveler is creating new homes wherever you go. And Peru has been the place where we created so many memories and emotional bonds to places and people.

I used to think of home as a place where I have my bed, my shower and all my things. Now I see home in a different way. The little bungaloo in Puerto Maldonado, the platform filled with double beds in the Amazon Forest, the four different camp sites we slept at during our Ausangate Trek, all the hostels we have gone to and the little stone house I lived with a Mama Lorenza and her family for three days at Nacion Queros are places I can gladly call home.

Not all homes have a shower or a bed. But all homes are filled with memories, smiles, laughter and love. And in this sense, Peru has been one of the best homes I could ever ask for.

There is something magical about a star. Here in the southern hemisphere the stars are even more enthralling because of new constellations. We stand in awe at the Southern Cross peaking over the horizon in the early evening and use our imagination to finding larger constellations, later at nigh, such as the scorpion or mosquito. However, getting the best view of these twinkling wonders is not for the faint of heart: sleeping outside in the hostal courtyard is the best way to ensure a glimpse at the peppered sky. With two other friends and thick sleeping bags, we braved the cold. For hours we looked at the clusters of light and marveled at the occasional shooting star. Although it seemed like time itself did not exist, the bright moon rotating across the sky marked our hours spent laughing and talking. When we woke up in the morning, our illuminated night was gone—replaced with the warm sun and an infinite blue sky.
