I want to welcome you all to the Madagascar Summer 2016 Field Notes board. Today I woke up here in Colorado to the smell of apple blossoms wafting in my window with the morning sunshine. Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner. Before you know it, each of you will be waking up to the brand new sounds and smells of the cities, villages, and wild places of the Eighth Continent. Jumping into the unknown is a brave thing to do, and I'm honored to be the first to initiate you into your Dragons journey.
As you gear up for the adventure, keep an eye out on this board for letters of introduction from your instructor team. Micah, Sidonie, and Briana are the all-star instructors who will be traveling with you this summer. I'm humbled to be collaborating with such incredible educators who know so much about Madagascar. They will post more details here on this forum as the course approaches, including advice for course preparation including packing suggestions, recommended readings, your itinerary, and potential topics for your ISP (independent study projects). Feel free to post any questions and concerns you have pre-course and your instructors will respond. As your Program Director, I am here to steward and support the overall process from Boulder, and I am available to answer questions here at the Dragons office: 303.413.0822 ext. 123.
A bit about me: teaching and guiding are my passion, and I truly believe in the transformation, mentorship, and learning that Dragons courses offer students at a pivotal time in their lives. I will always remember the first time I made the decision to close my eyes and jump off the edge of the familiar, a study abroad program when I was 18. I am excited to be the first to welcome you into this learning community. You’ve joined a group of people who are alive, who aren’t content to stay home, who are talking about things that matter, and now that you’ve crossed this threshold you will never be the same.
Once again, Field Notes is the most appropriate forum to address all pre-course needs and concerns. Please take advantage of this chance to connect and foster a sense of community! This is a place for you to introduce yourselves and start talking about what your intentions are for your Dragons semester. When you arrive in Madagascar, Field Notes are the best way for you to share your experience with friends and family at home. At the end of your course, your Field Notes from your time in Madagascar become a scrapbook—I recommend looking at Field Notes from past courses to see what this amazing archive can look like.
Here's looking ahead to a phenomenal summer!

Dear Summer Students,
Welcome to the Dragons community and welcome to your FieldNotes board!
With summer just around the corner, we are excited to begin the final stages of course preparation with you. Launching your course FieldNotes board marks the first step towards building your summer community, as this interface will help us bridge great geographic distances and connect you with your course instructors, your fellow Dragons students, and the Boulder Administration.
You can think of your FieldNotes board as a virtual bulletin board.
Pre-course, your instructors will use the board to introduce themselves, tack up packing lists and respond to any of your pre-course departure questions.
On course, you can use FieldNotes to share photos with your fans back home, jot down vignettes of your life abroad, or share longer reflections about your unexpected adventures on an overnight train, at a meditation retreat, at your home-stay sister’s birthday party… It’s hard to capture everything that happens over the course of a summer, or expect to share it all for the first time when you arrive home. In many ways, your FieldNotes will become a collaborative journal, curated by members of your group and enjoyed by your friends and family back home.
Post-course, your FieldNotes board turns into one big adventure log that will commemorate your group’s experiences abroad.
