Hi all! My name is Max, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to travel with you all in China this summer! Since sixth grade, when I began studying Chinese, I have become quite fascinated with so many elements of China: the culture, food, history, politics…all of it! Last summer I did another Dragons program and got a taste of life in China, and this summer I have decided to come back for more!

In my free time, I like to run, cook, and explore new places in NYC (where I live) with my friends. At school, I’m involved in a smattering of activities: track team, a-Capella singing group, and debate. I also took a course on modern Chinese history this past semester that I found quite interesting.

I am extremely interested in Tibet and its history, both political and religious.  I have wanted to go to Tibet for a long time, and being able to go is really a dream come true for me!  I am really excited to ride the Qinghai-Tibet railway and to have a homestay with Tibetan nomads in addition to being so happy that we are able to go into the Tibet Autonomous Region!

The attached picture is of my Chinese teachers and me.  Along with some of my classmates, we returned from a school trip in Hong Kong last week...and now it's back to China for me!  I'm so excited!

I can’t wait to meet you all soon! I think this trip is going to be wonderful. 一路顺风, see you all in Los Angeles!

[post_content] => Dear Dragons Students and Families,

Your journey is right around the corner! By now, you should have received a final packet of information from us with final departure information. This note is full of important reminders. Please take the time to thoroughly read note below detailing your final departure instructions and some helpful advice.

You may have heard about Where There Be Dragons from others. If possible, set aside those predictions and descriptions. The experience varies from person to person, and from journey to journey. We have never had a group like yours. So, please, allow yourself to be known. Getting to that point may require some courage. We all have our own ways of letting ourselves be known: some will plunge right in, energized by the group experience; others will be more comfortable listening and getting to know others one-on-one. Discovering the best ways of letting others know you will be an important part of your adventure. For now, take the time to relax, read through this letter, and get prepared. We can’t wait to meet you.

Final Departure Instructions: China Programs
  1. Pre-Departure Checklist
  • We generally recommend students bring cash or a VISA card with access to $50-$75 a week for the duration of the trip. Please do NOT bring Traveler’s Checks. For more details on the specifics of your program packing list, please refer to your Course Preparation Manual.
  • We also recommend that students bring a couple photos from home or small gifts to share with their home-stay families and future friends.
  • Visit Dragons’ Field Notes board to double check for last-minute packing instructions/advice from your instructors. The Field Notes board can be accessed at, http://wheretherebedragons.com/blog
  • Review the Parent Support Kit. Parents, please take a moment to review the Parent Support Kit prior to program departure. This document was mailed in hard copy to your home in a pre-course “Welcome Box”; it can also be found online on your child’s MyDragons account. This document contains an overview of your child’s Dragons experience, a flow chart of your role and relationship to Dragons, detailed information on family expectations regarding student communication, advice from past parents, and FAQs.
  • Review Dragons’ Drugs and Alcohol Policy. In short, the use of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited on all Dragons programs. Dragons’ insurance policies, including our evacuation and medical coverage, will not honor claims if drugs and/or alcohol are involved. We cannot accept the risks presented by students’ consumption of drugs and/or alcohol and will terminate a student’s participation if drugs and/or alcohol are consumed at any time during the program, from arrival at the student’s international point of departure to his/her return to the international point of arrival at the end of the program. If a student is asked to return home under these circumstances, the student and his or her family will be responsible for all costs incurred by the student’s early departure, which will likely include a new plane ticket and all logistics required to safely return the student home.
  • Review Connecting Travel Instructions
  • Review all travel steps and make sure that he or she clearly understands the steps required to meet the rest of the group.
Day of Departure
  • Carry your passport with you, unless we have obtained your visa for you. We will return your passport with China visa upon your arrival to LA.
  • Locate the wallet-sized info card with connecting travel instructions and pack it with your passport/boarding pass so that the information is easily accessible.
  • Wear your Dragons T-shirt for easy identification! Dragons staff can also be identified by their Dragons t-shirts.

III. Connecting with Your Dragons Group Connecting with Your Dragons Group in Los Angeles Specific instructions to meet your group are listed below. For Students Arriving by Air:
  • Please arrive by 5:00 PM on June 28th. Proceed to baggage claim and gather your bags. Exit the terminal and wait on the “traffic island” under the RED OFF-AIRPORT SHUTTLE BUS SIGN. Catch the large black Mercedes Benz van for the Courtyard by Marriott LAX/El Segundo hotel or Dragons staff will pick you up in a marked white van (and wearing Dragons t-shirts). Do not take the blue van as you will go to another Marriott property. We will be making frequent trips between the airport and the hotel but please be patient as you wait for us to arrive.
For Students Arriving by Car:
  • Please arrive at the Courtyard by Marriott LAX/El Segundo (2000 East Mariposa Avenue El Segundo, California 90245 USA) by 5:00 PM on June 28th. Your instructors and fellow students will be awaiting your arrival, wearing Dragons t-shirts.
If You Have Trouble Finding Your Dragons Group:
  • Should you have trouble locating the rest of the group, please call our central Boulder office at 303-413-0822 during business hours (M-F 8:30- 5:30, MST). If it is after hours, please call 303-921-6078. We will be on call to help you connect with the group.
After Program Departure Communicating with your Child in the Field
  • The Field Notes board: Each Dragons group has a dedicated Field Notes board. Instructors and students will post notes from the field on their course-specific Field Notes board throughout the course. While instructors frequently encourage students to post’, the course itinerary and/or poor internet connections (while out on trek, in rural homestay villages etc.) may intermittently limit communication. In that vein, we ask for your continued patience and dedicated readership over the course of the summer. We expect news from each program every three days, unless otherwise noted by instructors.
  • Direct Student Communication: Dragons students will have fairly regular access to telephones and to e-mail. Per the notes in your Course Preparation Manual and Parent Support Kit.
Emergency Response Protocol Dragons’ administrative staff will be on-call 24/7 to respond to emergencies or evacuation needs from the field. Our instructors will be able to contact Dragons US staff at all hours. Parents seeking emergency assistance are asked to contact our office. If no one is available, or if you call outside of regular office hours (8:30-5:30 MST), please leave a message at ext. 130 and we will return your call as soon as possible. To Call Dragons Office: 303-413-0822 / 800-982-9203 x 130 To E-mail Dragons Office: info@wheretherebedragons.com If parents intend to travel during the program, please email or fax us a copy of your itinerary with phone numbers for emergency contact. Our fax # is 303-413-0857. Please also note that if you are overseas, you will not be able to use our #800. From overseas call 001-303-413-0822. Parents, thank you for the support you’ve given your child in making this opportunity available. Students, thank you for stepping out and joining us; we’re so excited to meet you in person! [post_content] => Hey everyone!

My name is Tara Weil and I’m super excited for our four weeks in Tibet and China! I am from Chicago, IL and go to a school in Exeter, NH where I will be a sophomore next year. I love to play volleyball (New England Champs!), row crew, read, create videos, and watch movies, and in the outdoors I especially love being on the water.

On this trip I am especially interested in exploring the changing religious and cultural environment of China. As I explored some of China’s rich history, I gained appreciation for what I know so far of their culture, and I’m excited to soon be immersed in it. I took Chinese in middle school, so we’ll see how much (or really how little) I remember, and it should hopefully come in handy!

See you all in L.A.!

Tara

    [post_content] => Hey guys!
Wow, well, guess I better join in on this introduction thing! My name is Nicolette, I am 17 years old, and I live in Boulder, Colorado. I found out I was going on this trip about three weeks ago, therefore, I am currently still trying to comprehend the fact that this is happening at all; if I look incredibly bewildered when I arrive in LA to meet you guys, that is why. I am beyond excited to have this opportunity, and I cannot wait to get to know all of you!
My reasoning for applying to this program was based on the fact that, of course, I love to travel, but also that it will serve as my senior culminating project for high school, the project being a focus on Chinese tradition, religion, and culture. This was sparked by my love of Chinese martial arts; I am incredibly dedicated to my practice of traditional Kung Fu (Seven Star Mantis style), which I study at a school here in Boulder. Other than that, I have an incredible lack of knowledge around anything Chinese, making my intention for this adventure to learn anything and everything I can about the place/culture that the art I love so much originates from.
When I'm not doing cool looking kicks and forms (I mean, I think they're cool looking, but I can't see myself, you guys will have to be the judges of that), I work as a florist, sing, play piano and guitar, and am obsessing over video games, Star Wars, science, and musicals.

Best of luck to all of you with the rest of your trip preparations, and I will see you in 8 days!
Nicolette

Hi everyone!

My name is Maya, and I am ecstatic for the journey that awaits! I am from Rutland, Ohio, and go to school in Farmington, Connecticut, where I will be junior next year. I am passionate about travel, especially in which the ways seeing the world connects us, and minimizes the physical and conceived distance people normally experience from geographic location. I find the idea of a common human experience fascinating, and an understanding of this concept has become more apparent to me by attempting to comprehensively understand other nations and cultures. Although I have never studied Mandarin or Chinese history, I am tremendously grateful for the chance to simultaneously learn about these topics while witnessing the significance of various religious and cultural practices in China. In my free time, I like to read, do pottery, and learn about different countries within my favorite club, Model UN.

I look forward to meeting all of you, and embarking on a life-changing voyage in a few short days!

Maya
