    [post_content] => Callie, here! The last few weeks have been a whirlwind wrapping up a summer philanthropy course, preparing my home for a month of travel, and packing. My excitement to meet you all and explore a new country has been building. This will be my first journey to Nepal. I am thrilled, curious, nervous, and naive - feeling much like my students just before a new adventure.

I'm the Director of The Glenn Institute for Philanthropy and Service Learning at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA. Our team coordinates K-12 community service, service learning, and philanthropy education experiences. We've been exploring ways to create more sustainable partnerships abroad. I'm constantly struggling with ways we create opportunities for our students that are authentic, encourage civic-minded, globally engaged learning, that tackle real issues while ensuring we are working WITH not FOR our community partners. I am excited to explore  possibilities with you all.

On a personal note, I was born, raised, and have matured in the American South. I grew up in small town but found myself pulled to the "big city." However, my curiosity around culture and my fear of complacency has me on a plane every opportunity I get. I've traveled North and Central America, Europe, Africa and now Asia and Australia. I have a co-dependent relationship with my 8 yr old Australian Shepherd pup, Indie (named after Indiana Jones).  I've recently been exploring yoga. See you all shortly!

    [post_content] => Hi everybody and sorry for the late entry!  My name is Donald Anselmi and I am a Spanish teacher at Berkshire School in Massachusetts.  I've been in education now for 12 years and have taught both Spanish and history.  I am so excited about this experience and what it will do for me as an educator, travel program planner, global citizen, and parent.  I look forward to sharing with the Berkshire community, family and friends when I return.  I went to the Rocky Mountain Seminar a couple years ago, and now I'm excited to see how Dragons implements their philosophy and to be a part of the experiences they created.  I'm also excited to learn new methods for teaching culture and global issues both in and outside of the classroom.  There are so many things I'm excited about learning that it overwhelms me a bit as I head into this course.  I feel that the group and the Dragons support staff and leaders will be there to guide all of us though which gives me a sense of ease even though I know we will be pushed both physically and emotionally at times.  While I've gotten a good sense of what we as a group will be learning through the readings and conversations with Dragons employees, I know there will be much much more.  As I think of the bigger picture.  I want to become more aware of the both myself and the world around me in this experience.  I'm excited and honored to be sharing it with all of you in this type of setting.  See you soon!

     I'm Kelsea Turner and I am thrilled and admittedly a bit terrified to embark on this journey with all of you! I cannot wait to be on the ground in Nepal and know that our experience together will be life-changing.

I am originally from the midwest and lived and worked in Turkey and Syria for a brief time after college, sparking a lifelong love of travel. My husband and I have three children-- ages 11, 18, and 20-- and we are avid explorers, hikers, and lovers of all things outdoors.

     I have spent the past ten years as a 7th and 8th grade history teacher at Spartanburg Day School in the upstate of South Carolina. Our school is undergoing an exciting transformation, recently committing to meaningful institutional growth and change. By design, teachers are at the forefront of redefining who we are and how we will fulfill our promise to students. The Dragons course in Nepal represents an important opportunity for me to explore the question of how we can integrate experiential learning into our curriculum in ways that result in powerful learning opportunities for our students. I'm looking forward to learning from all of you. See you soon!

    [post_content] => Hello everyone! I am so looking forward to meeting you and learning with you all.

I am a former English Language Learners/ESL teacher and am now working as a Site Director at Sonoma State University for the California International Studies Project, which brings global education to the k-12 classroom/school experience by inspiring and supporting our teachers through a teacher-driven professional learning community. I'm planning to use what I learn with you all to create transformational experiences for our community of educators here in Northern California. Of course, I myself look forward to learning and being immersed in a completely new part of the world.

Sounds like we will all have many things in common, and I look forward to learning more about each of you. I also practice yoga almost daily and am completing my yoga teacher training. I love to sing and play guitar. I live in Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco, in a small community of friends!

Hope everyone has a safe and restful flight- see you in less than a week!

    [post_content] => My name is Vicki Weeks and I live in Seattle Washington. I have worked for over 30 years in the field of global and experiential education. I currently own and operate my own consulting business called Global Weeks, working primarily with independent schools in the US and Canada to support global and experiential strategic planning and program development. Before I started my business 5 years ago, I spent 13 years at Lakeside School, a co-ed 5-12 day school. My signature project was creating and running a deeply immersive summer global service learning program in 10 sites in the developing world.

I am excited to spend time in Nepal, a country I have dreamed of visiting for decades. I am particularly interested in the culture, religion, arts and resilience of a people who have continued to survive so many challenges. I also love mountains.

I have been married for 34 years and have two grown sons, an educator in Denver and a filmmaker in Brooklyn. I have a regular yoga practice, and enjoy walking around the lake near my house, reading, singing, and talking with all kinds of people.

See you soon!

    [post_content] => Hello, everyone! I want to briefly introduce myself. My name is Echo. I was born and raised in Shanghai. I went to NYU for graduate school. I studied foreign language education. I have been teaching Mandarin at Trinity school for the past five years. Trinity school is an independent, co-educational day school for grades K-12 located in NYC. I teach students from 9th to 12th grade.

I first heard of Where There Be Dragons from my students. I had a few students going on the China Trip. They had an amazing experience. I actually took my students to China in 2014 and 2015. It was a difficult and rewarding job. I can't wait to join the Nepal Educator's program and to learn from the experience. Hopefully I will be able to bring back some useful tools which can be used in the students' trips.

I love traveling a lot. I have been to Peru, Bolivia, Singapore, Bermuda, etc. I know that our experience in Nepal would be an unique one. I look forward to meeting everyone!

    [post_content] => Hello!

I wanted to quickly introduce myself to the group!  My name is Kyra Jenney and I am a religion, history, and philosophy teacher at Choate Rosemary Hall, a co-educational boarding school in Connecticut.  Originally from the D.C. area, I moved to Connecticut after college to teach at Choate.  I've been here four years now and live with my partner and senior rescue dog Nora.

In college, the focuses of my majors were in Comparative Religions and Peace & Justice Studies.  I teach a number of elective courses now for freshmen and seniors in religion and contemporary global issues.  I am so excited for how perfectly this Educators Program matches up with my current courses, and I'm looking forward to being able to do some new curriculum development when we return that's informed by our journey together!

Mark Turin's piece for BBC Radio and the interview about development in Kathmandu raised some really significant questions about the changes and renewal going on in Nepal.  Most interestingly to me, Turin's piece at one point asked listeners to examine the motives and backgrounds of those who attempt to save Nepal's endangered languages.  Why are they doing this work?  Who are they saving these languages for?  How might their socioeconomic backgrounds unknowingly prejudice their work?  These same questions must also be asked of the external forces at play in Nepal's urban development and planning efforts.  When a U.S. donor, for example, gives money to aid in the reconstruction of cultural heritage sites, who is meant to benefit most from this action?  Is it the living community that surrounds the site? The western tourist who might come to "experience" Nepal?  Both?  The answer greatly impacts the nature of the project, its outcome, etc.  I'm already having so many ideas about the ways in which I might bring these topics and discussions back to my classroom in the fall, and I'm especially excited to share, collaborate, grow, and journey with all of you!

I know we'll all get to know each other well during our time together, but I'll just share a few more things about myself to hopefully help speed up that process.  I'm 26, a vegetarian, and a dog lover.  I coach squash and am dorm head of a house of 21 junior girls.  I went to a boarding high school and then to Gettysburg College.  I'm currently enrolled in a Master of Arts program at Hartford Seminary in Religious Studies.  When I have a weekend to get away, I usually go up to Montreal or down to D.C. to visit family.  I love live music and outdoor concerts.  I am a hockey fan and love the Montreal Canadiens.  And the last place I traveled to outside of the U.S. and Canada was Lithuania.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone in two shorts weeks!

Kyra

    [post_content] => Dear Educators,

It is hard to believe that we will be meeting in 3 short weeks.  In speaking with you all, one of the places that I mentioned was the village of Chaukati, where we hope to spend a few days interacting with community members and diving into discussions around service learning, development and sustainability.  This area was hit hard by the earthquake last year and most families lost their homes and their fields due to landslides.  Our hope is to help in a meaningful way, as well as engage in a heartfelt dialogue around how the community has, and still is, responding to this natural disaster.

Suren and I were initially introduced to Chaukati in 1998 by our friend Mark Turin, who had been doing extensive linguistic research in the area on the Thangmi language.  We had the fortune of bringing many students there over the years that followed and fostering a deep relationship with the people and the land of Chaukati.  We are both looking forward to going back and sharing this with you.

I have included a short radio interview by Mark and a beautifully written field note by Japhy Dhungana, a Dragon's instructor, for you to enjoy.  Both introduce Man Bahadur - a village chief, freedom fighter, artist, poet, father, grandfather, and all around beautiful human being.  He is pictured here sitting with his wife in their home in Chaukati.

I hope this note finds you all well.
