[post_content] => Hey All, We are winding down our last night just outside of Beijing in 响水湖. We spent our day both getting ready for our return and enjoy each others company on the great wall. The last two days since we left the village have been a whirlwind, these stories and many more will arrive soon upon our return. In a mere 8hrs and we will head to the airport, we will post when all the students have passed through security.

[post_content] => The flies woke me up long before my alarm started squawking, and after that, there was no chance of falling back asleep. The numerous flies on the ceiling (there were over twenty) were simply too captivating. After that, my family and I ate breakfast, consisting of hard boiled eggs and bread buns. My family consisted of a dad and a mom. They have told me they have two sons, but neither has made an appearance. Soon after breakfast, the dad left, and the mom went to the garden, leaving me alone with their small puppy. Luckily, the mom soon returned, and we were able to go work in the fields (Oh boy!). This work consisted of what I believed to be weeding a field, for a whopping two hours. After that, I had to go to rejoin the group so we could do our daily check-in. Then the group walked a ways to an old Tibetan-style monastery. The walk was long, and complaints abound, but we eventually got there. Luckily, it was worth the walk, as it was a spectacular building, something that one might have seen in a movie about Tibet. At the bottom was a room ringed by spinning bells, which we could spin for a blessing. Then there was a massive flight of stairs leading up to where the young monks were trained. At the top of the monastery, we stopped to have a discussion, and then descended to some waiting vans. This raised the mood level considerably, as no one wanted to walk all the way back (as stated above, the walk was quite a distance). After returning to my host family, we went to a community dinner with a bunch of their friends. The food was quite tasty, but I couldn’t quite understand the conversation, as it was all in the local dialect. That being said, when they addressed me, they tried to speak in broken mandarin, which was fun. After it got dark, we rode the dad’s three-wheeler to the village, where I promptly went to sleep. Overall, it was a fun experience.

We had another wonderful day in our village! Today was National Children’s Day, so we went to the school and watched the students sing the national anthem and the Young Pioneers song. Afterwards, some of our classmates’ families had lunch together at Cooper’s house. We got to eat and chat with a lot of the other people in the village and see how they interact as a community. Then, we went on a hike partway up the mountain where we ran into a lot of tourists from other parts of China, who come to this village to ride horses led by a Naxi tour guide and use selfie sticks to their maximum potential. Later, we walked down the hill, making our way to Lashi Lake. We walked for a long time, still didn’t reach the lake, and thought that we would never get there. After resting for a bit, though, we decided to keep going, and we’re really glad that we did. The landscape at the lake was absolutely beautiful, and we could see all the mountains and villages that surround it. We wanted to go kayaking, but the first prices they gave us were far too expensive. So, we got to watch Ms. Wei bargain for a more reasonable price, and it worked! The lake was calm and picturesque, and kayaking was super fun. We returned and had another communal meal with some of our classmates and their host families. All in all, we had an enjoyable and relaxing last full day in the village.

[post_content] => First things first: we are now settled in our Nanyao village homestays and internet is very limited here. We are not out of reach, but this means that our field notes will probably not have picures until we reach Beijing.

What an adventure the last few days have been! After our night on the train in three-story bunks, we woke to Chinese music and a beautiful sunrise over the mountains of rural China. We then boarded a bus to the Lijiang old town, an ancient villiage that many Naxi people used to call home, but has since become a commercialized tourist hotspot. The changes that have taken place over the last few decades were astounding. We were able to compare the new, tourist-oriented shops with the last remaining actual dwelling in the area, owned by a man whose family had owned the Qing dynasty house for many generations. Our next destination was the home of Xuan Ke, a world famous conductor that was  imprisoned for 21 years after speaking his mind during the 100 Flowers Movement. Hearing his opinions and thoughts on the Chinese government, the Naxi, and music of minority cultures was very interesting. We then took a ride up to the village of Lashahai, surrounded by mountains that reminded us of Colorado. We arrived in the beautiful village ready to meet with our second homestay families, who speak the Naxi dialect as their primary language, but who (luckily!) also speak some Mandarin. We went our separate ways for our first night with our families, and the following afternoon (today) we gathered again with many, many stories. From playing Mahjong to working in the fields, from feeding livestock to seeing funny commercials on TV, everyone came away with an interesting story to tell and a new perspective into this rural way of life. We continued to share stories as we tried to find our way to a Tibetan Buddhist temple in the mountains. Once we finally turned the last corner, we were amazed to see a gorgeous, colorful temple in the midst of the green hills. We spent the next few hours exploring the temple, taking many pictures, and discussing our observations and changes in perspective from our previous time spent in Kunming, as well as some thoughts on cultural studies and development. In the end, the long trek was definitely worth it! We were all very relieved to discover that our group had arranged for taxis/vans to take us home. Our minds and bodies are tired after all of our new experiences, but we are looking forward to another day in this remarkable place.

I’ve had a great experience here in Lashihai with my amazing host mom! She speaks Naxi hua, but also speaks Mandarin very well. She understands everything I say, or at least pretends she does! She is a bit older (she has grandkids!) and lives alone. She’s very independent. This morning we went to work in the fields for a couple hours, pulling some sort of short plant out of the ground with our hands. She gave me a sun hat to wear and made sure I drank enough water. The Naxi transport smaller items in baskets that they carry on their backs and my host mom filled hers with grass as we left the fields. When we got home, I finally realized it was to feed to the ox! She also has chickens, piglets, and kittens. I finally realized how strong and self-sufficient she is when, after working in the field for two hours, she made lunch for me, her brother, and her son. And, of course, she always tries to refuse my help and do everything herself. She’s always offering me more food or water, and last night she made sure my bed had at least four blankets and two comforters so I would stay warm at night.

Other fun facts about my host mom: she has two sons and one daughter, makes really cute noises whenever she sees a baby, has never been to Kunming, and sings to herself while walking, cooking, or working in the field. She’s a really sweet and really impressive lady!
