[post_content] => I have a very "happy" life. I was born into a beautiful, loving family, regularly enjoy upper-middle class comforts, and spend my free time on California beaches with friends who truly care about me. Yet I was still searching for "happiness". What exactly is happiness? A few weeks ago I'd say it's the 3:00 pm relief of my 8-hour shift ending, when I had a good hair day, buying new clothes, going to parties and concerts and taking Instagram-worthy pictures that got over 50 likes. Adelaide calls moments like these "champagne moments". My life, one champagne moment after another, chasing the high of the exciting, glamorous events- acting as fuel for a few days until my tank would run low and I'd need to cash out on something new to feel happy. When asked what my goal for the trip was, I said to that I wanted to figure out how to be happy, to have the joyous feeling that champagne moments gave me without the crash that follows. I came to India chasing something I never felt I had, but so, so desperately wanted. Something I have chased so relentlessly my entire life, trying everything, experiencing the pain of failure and emptiness despite all my efforts.

There is a saying that goes: "How precious a sunny day is after a few weeks of rain." What I have found is that the opposite is also true (especially for us Californians) that the first rain after so many days of drought is just as beautiful. The water moments. The simple things that make you lose yourself in a joy that comes from a place deep in the stomach. So what is happiness? Today, I will tell you that happiness is a warm bucket shower after days of sitting in your own sweat. It's the giggling of a tiny living room barely holding all my little Nepali cousins and siblings, learning to dance and having my hair braided. Happiness is the being moved to tears during a monastary lecture, despite my stiff back and aching neck, because the monk tells me that the negativity and pollution I've harbored in my mind for so long is not mine to carry. It's the bumpy ride in the back of a truck to the Lepcha village, waking up to the majesty of the Himalayas being revealed from their viel of mist, a view so elusive yet so breathtaking, bonding with my non-English speaking aamaa by cooking with her (ok, I just cut the ginger) and her laughing at my butchering of the Nepali language.
Today was the best day of my entire life. Rice patty planting that turned into an epic mud fight, and I mean epic. Covered in mud and breathless from the laughter that can't be contained, we ran through the jungle to a river, little waterfalls flowing into refreshing pools and "cleansing" the mud from our skin. It was pure joy. The moment was all that there was, no anxiety about being accepted, no makeup to worry about smudging. The happiness was so raw and uncontained.
The happiness I've felt in India has been beautiful, it's easy to fear the changes not only materialistically but also mentally that I will experience coming back to America. But what I've noticed is that what I miss most from home are not champagne moments. I carry with me happy memories of crawling into bed with my mom while she reads, of hiking with my dog early in the morning before other hikers wake up. It's not the actual act of going out with friends, but coming back to my friends house after and watching horror movies and eating popcorn. It's the simple understated moments I spend with people I love so deeply that have filled me with a sense of gratitude. The moments I didn't strive for happiness, and instead just lived. I'm so blessed to have experienced what I have experienced in India, I am excited for the final week. I am also blessed to have such a beautiful place to go home to, such a strong sense of peace and a newfound appreciation for the water moments.

Happiness Is A Warm Bucket Bath

Lezah Pope,Best Notes From The Field, Sikkim 4-week, Homestay

Description

I have a very “happy” life. I was born into a beautiful, loving family, regularly enjoy upper-middle class comforts, and spend my free time on California beaches with friends who truly care about me. Yet I was still searching for “happiness”. What exactly is happiness? A few weeks ago I’d say it’s the 3:00 pm relief of […]

[post_content] => 7:00 - Breakfast. Cereal. Porridge. Omelets. This is the most western environment we have experienced in the past two weeks. That's actually really underwhelming.
8:00 - Nepali class. Malaai Minajiko maayaa chaahinchha. My needs aren't being met on this trip. Not really (Jiis kheyko.)
9:00 - Meditation. (10 minute nap.) Sorry.
9:10 - Chogyal Royal Palace Monastary. Very beautiful. The fog parting at the top of the hill was like a dream. Then it started raining lots.
Rest of the Day - Fast paced exploration of Gangtok. The Tibetan restaurant had the best food on the trip so far. (In my opinion.) Spending the day with the group was awesome. Being on expedition phase and therefore without help from instructors was stressful but fulfilling. A successful day is even more satisfying when it is planned independently, even though it's more difficult. Lilly did a great job of leading the group. Everybody played a role in making the day great. The handicrafts museum was very interesting as well. All around enjoyable day in the capital of Sikkim.

[post_content] => This week is my tenth week of my life in India. I have to admit it keeps getting better and better. Out of all 63 days here so far, I can say with confidence that there's beauty everywhere I go, whether I'm in rural villages, small towns, or large cities. And on top of that, it's super easy to find. It's like being bombarded with all that life is - chaos and organization, hand holding and cold glances, sweating and shivering, feeling isolated and feeling extremely loved - all the time. You just become so aware of life, real life. It's pretty addicting. Ten weeks is a while, but I know for a fact that it's not enough. I will be back and I am so excited for more Indian journeys.

[post_content] => Life has slowed down in Sittong. In a village of 200 Lepcha families spread over miles of mountains, no one is in a rush for anything. Meals take hours to prepare - creating grain with mortar and pestle, growing corn and ginger in patches of garden, finding the perfect sized chicken to feed five people - no one is infected with a need for the fast paced. Three to five sickles made in a day, a twenty minute walk to say hello to a best friend (thirty if there is rain), a two hour walk to school if you're older than ten. The tea is picked by leaves of two and three, rice is grown on endless terraces - rows of eight, clumps of five - ordered neatly and handled with care by men and women who know to sing is to laugh and to laugh is to love. Nothing has a single use: a battered tin box for almonds finds life as a pencil case, rags and nets patch up hoses. Bamboo baskets are made to order. Metal is melted and shaped by both blacksmith and customer. Rain interludes and everything is still.

Things could be different but nobody has asked for change. I wonder if this is what life feels like when time is more real. Things made and grown by people with names and stories to share.

[post_content] => I had a discussion today about happiness. This has been one of many and I have begun to conclude that much of happiness lives within contentment and community. One of the things I was looking to find coming to India was the happiness of different cultures. The sense of community in the places we have visited is overwhelming. There are no lines or boundaries dividing family, friends or neighbors. They are one, together.
Something Dan said today very beautifully encompassed a lot of of the social differences I have seen here: "If you ask a person in a western culture who they are, they will list their accomplishments, traits and defining attributes. But if you ask a person from an eastern culture who they are they will say they are a brother and a worker and a friend." The people are their relationships with others. The people of West Bengal and Sikkim are all part of a bigger thing, they are one in a community and that is the most valued part of life.
I have found happiness in many different things but I have certainly seen more contentment and self-fulfillment in India then I have ever seen in America. In the United States people are always searching for the happiness, going to the next big place, getting the next beautiful thing, always moving forward, looking to find something bigger and better. These communities are not searching, they are just living. They live in the warmth of family, the love of human connections and the depth of community. I believe these people have found happiness.
