[post_content] => Hi Friends! Exactly one month ago today, we dropped most of you off at the airport, said a (rushed) goodbye, and sent you on your way. I've thought of you all a bunch in this past month, and hope that you're all "getting into it" - staying present, asking questions, challenging assumptions, and cultivating wonder - wherever you are. Looking forward to seeing you again in India someday!

We're thrilled to report that the student group has arrived safely in Newark. They are on united Airlines flight #083. Due to the late hour, it should take them anywhere between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to go through customs and immigration.  For those students catching connecting flights, Chime will help the students meet these.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us the office at 303.413.0822. Alternatively, you can email us at update@wheretherebedragons.com.

[post_content] => Dear Friends and Family,

A few hours ago, our group said goodbye at Delhi International Airport. Everyone is on their way home! Before our departure, we all took a moment to write down our reflections on the trip. These words come from your daughters and sons, young people we have come to know and admire. It has been a tremendous, wonderful month (although we do apologize for our lack of connectivity and very few Yaks)! Big thanks to all of you who have supported and encouraged this journey, and will continue to support each person throughout his or her transition home.

And now, in their words:

Question: How have the itinerary, experiences, or events of the last month impacted you?

"I have discovered that spiritual growth does not have to come in a few moments of grand beauty or awe. We are constantly becoming enlightened and evolving in the simple, little moments everywhere. Everything depends on how we view it."

"I have been put out of my comfort zone which has given me a new frame of mind."

"It's hard to say how I'm different than I was before because I'm in such different environment than I was before. I've been less in my head and more in my eyes, ears, skin. Perhaps this is due to the chaotic wilderness of people more walked through...I've learned that belief often dictates even small, mundane daily actions. I've learned that traveling is choosing what to look at. I've learned that I was on a 'path' of sorts; and I'm glad to have been plucked off of it. Still, my sense of self hasn't been bust up. My metaphorical foundations have been shaken and are rusting around the edges..."

"I am now much wiser. I have received much knowledge within my brain. I am in all aspects the perfect human."

"In this trip I have learned a lot about culture, language and politics. I feel that I'm ready to explore India alone at this point."

"In this trip I learned that the word 'Julley' (not sure how to spell that) will get you around Ladakh and get you a lot of friends along the way."

"I'm happy."

"This trip has shown me how little I actually know, and has inspired me to learn and explore."

"My experience trekking and camping during a storm has brought up in me a greater sense of gratitude for having a roof over my head and a warm and dry bed to sleep in at night."

Question: What is one thing that you would like to say to your friends and family?

"I want you to know that we are really privileged to have everything we do and we could benefit from learning to be satisfied with what we have. :) "

"I'd like you to know that I love you, and all is well."

"Get into it."

"I want to appreciate the time you have taken out of your day to read my Yaks."

"I want you to know that I can't wait to get home and share my experiences."

"I wanted to let you know that India is amazing and I'm planning to come back!...when I travel the world!"

"Please restock the fridge before I get home...A month of lentils and rice has gotten to me."

"I want you to know that I feel weird about going home, whatever that means."

"I want you to know that I'm craving a steak. Also, I can't wait to get home and see all of you." [post_content] => We made it!

On the 21st, we arrived back at our guest house in leh after 7 days of trekking. The trek was truly incredible. I distinctly remember waking up one morning in particular on what must have been the 3rd or 4th day of trekking. When we woke up and opened the zipper of our tent, we had and incredible view of the towering mountains above us that were surrounded by low cloud coverage.

I can't describe how beautiful the trek was. While it did rain almost every day of the trek, the rain made almost every view green and luscious. Parts of the trek didn't even look like we were in india. We were surrounded by long rolling green hills and snow stained mountains.

While the trek was beautiful, I am glad to be back in leh again. It feels so incredible to be dry all the time after a long soggy trek.

[post_content] => Building Character-going through unnecessary pain for nothing but at least having an excuse for it

How character has been build on this tripཿ

-hiking up a cliff with 40 pounds on your back

-"sleeping" with water dripping on you from the storm and wind blowing on your tent

-eating extremely spicy peppers

-pooping your guts out alone in a compost toilet

-crossing ice cold rivers

-suffocating yourself in the low oxygen air

But really.  Why do we do this stuff?  Is it for the views we get?  For the lifestyle we get to experience?  The change of our own frame of mind?

All I know is that for me personally, I have built lots of character this trip

[post_content] => The trekking portion of our trip has come to a close and one must look back on the whole experience, from the rainy nights and leaky tents, to the goat herders and their seas of Pashmina,  and to the views so breathtaking they make the thin air seem like childs play, and realize that we have been so removed from anything we previously knew and yet we still feel like we belong. When on the opposite side of the world I learned a new appreciation for the fact that we are all of the same species, and onlythe societies we form are what seperate us. When we gaze out from the top of a high pass all people see the same beauty, when we eat Chicken Tikka Masala we all taste the same blissful, flavorful, fruit of the fowl that make all vegetarians jealous, and when we see baby goats grazing in the field we all feel the same need to hug them and take them home with us.

Taking these baby goats as an example we can see where the split in our understanding of each other forms. To the Ladakhi goat herder coddling a lamb  like we all wish to is unrealistic when you have an entire mob of horned fursacks to take care of. So when I see a baby goat lifted by it's neck and thrown into it's cage without a care my initial reaction is utter shock and sadness. But then I thought that if I was put in charge of this flock I would have even less ability to control them without the use of violence. This goat herder is another human and has to conform to this work ethic against his will, just as I would have had I been born on this side of the world.

So we ask the world: Is the herder at fault, or is the very nature of baby goats that we have to blame?

[post_content] => It's early afternoon and you've just finished your final hour of today's trek. Your shoulders ache from your day pack, your bladder is going to explode because for some reason altitude makes peeing an urgent matter, and all you want is to take off your hiking boots. Just as you reach your camp site, Thinlas, the all-knowing Ladakhi, looks up at the sky and informs the group that you need to set up your tents quickly. Urgent bladder issues forgotten, guides, I-team members, and students race to put up tents. After a few days of practice you're much faster at knowing which metal poles go through which plastic loop, and you stake your tent into the ground just in time. You leap inside, unceremoniously tossing in your stuff as you go. The floor of the tent is somehow already wet and you have to channel your inner Buddha as you come to terms with a soggy sleeping pad tonight. Praising the incredible invention of rain gear, you sprint from your personal tent to the group dining tent, both trying not to slip in the mud and trying to spend the least amount of time outside as possible. The interior of the dining tent smells exactly the way you'd expect 9 unshowered teenagers encased by rubber to smell. As the rain  increases in force outside and your nose  forgets the mustiness, you begin to appreciate the conversation (both intellectual and trivial), games, and warmth provided by those around you. So, despite your hatred for unpredictable and not ideal weather, as Andy would say: "At least we built character"
