    [post_content] => Hi friends, family, and whoever else spends their time on the yak yak board!
I'm going to keep this brief because after 9 peaceful days without internet it only took me 20 short minutes to become frustrated. This morning we hiked up the mountain for a half hour to meet with a Taoist nun (we are nearly experts on Taoism by now). She answered the questions we prepared for her, gave a short schpeel, and demonstrated some tai-chi. She is currently fasting and has not left her temple for over 100 days. In the afternoon, we were given free reign, within reason of course. A few of us hiked to the top of the mountain which was 2600 m higher in elevation and the equivalent of 75 flights of stairs each way. Soccer has quickly become our favorite way to pass time. After the hot day, we treated ourselves to a deal: bing bong (popsicles/ice cream) for only 40 cents each.
P.S. Happy 13th birthday to my "best little sister in the universe", Anne! There are 7 piglets at the place we are staying, and I just wish I could sneak one home for you.

    [post_content] => Ni hao!

After five beautiful and engaging days in Bangdong village, we are now in Dali and eagerly preparing for our flight to Beijing this evening. Our time in the village was an incredible glimpse of rural China and allowed us to see how rapid economic development is affecting even those who still live mostly off the land. Our hosts were exceedingly kind and took wonderful care of us throughout our stay.

We had a few hiccups with internet connection last night and this morning, but hopefully students will be able to post some of their reflections and photos by this afternoon or tonight. We have the following two days to explore Beijing and then we'll move out to a farmhouse near the Great Wall on our last day/night to wrap the experience. We will update again from Beijing.

Warmly,

Michael

    [post_content] => Dear families,
I just got off the phone with Steve Fabian.  They have not had internet access since they got to their host family community in Bangdong and tonight is their last night with their host families.  Steve had nothing but praise for the students and reports that everyone is in good spirits, the trip is going very well and everyone is having a great experience.
Yesterday they "tried" to help pick tea leaves with the community members.  Steve emphasized "tried" because it is such a complicated process that they were worried they would do something wrong!  Tomorrow they leave for Dali for two nights and then to Beijing.  Before you know it, they'll be home with so many stories to share!
Cheers,
Pauline

    [post_content] => 大家好!

We're nearing the middle of our course and heading into homestays tomorrow! The group has focused the last few days on honing our survival Mandarin skills, but also on encouraging individual exploration and breaking ourselves into being comfortable with personal interactions with Chinese people we meet - whether by speaking or through non-verbal communication.

We'll arrive in Bangdong Village tomorrow after almost a full day of bus travel, and Colin (our counterpart in Bangdong) will arrive long before us. Tomorrow is market day, so if we arrive in time we'll start off our visit with perhaps the most vibrant community event of the week - a tour of the market. Instructors will have domestic phones and an international phone, but we'll be out of internet contact so look for us on this Yak board after we get to Dali on the 24th!

Best wishes from Wei Bao Mountain,

Cookie and Snackie (Michael and Juliet)

A new place, a new phase

大家好! We’re nearing the middle of our course and heading into homestays tomorrow! The group has focused the last few days on honing our survival Mandarin skills, but also on encouraging individual exploration and breaking ourselves into being comfortable with personal interactions with Chinese people we meet – whether by speaking or through non-verbal communication. Hello parents and followers, Reed Doerler here to fill you in about the squad's first day in Weishan. We woke up early this morning on our sleeper train, and spent a wonderful few hours in the city of Dali. After a nutritious breakfast of dumplings, we squeezed into 3 vans and began our trip to our mountain-top hotel in Weishan, Yunnan. We had about an hour of free time, and then travelled down into the heart of old Weishan. Here is where we had our main day's activity; each student was released on a solo journey to interact with locals, and learn about their lives'. It was very eye-opening, and each student returned with a new sense of wonder as well as understanding. Dinner was filled with excitement, and the group gladly celebrated the 17th birthday of Mike Tiffany Fitzgerald. Post chocolate fruit cake, the squad threw on some sneakers for an intense game of soccer, with Aadil receiving the MVP award with 40 goals and 87 assists. Tomorrow we will meet with a daoist nun to learn about her life, and begin our path to inner peace. Squad out. [post_content] => Greetings Hun-Hawken China group! As the Hawken "On Call" administrator, every day I obsessively check my phone for emails or messages from Dragons, less so because I'm nervous about your safety and well-being than because I'm hungry for news and images from your journey. Your Yak postings bring me a bit closer to what you are experiencing and I relish reading each one and anticipate all those yet to come. As a Dragons "alumni" (I led a Hawken group to Myanmar last summer), I know that you are moving through personal, cultural and geographic spaces that are new, fascinating, and at times uncomfortable. Yet, as you carry on over these three weeks, those strange sights, sounds, tastes and feelings will start to feel very normal and inviting. You may even have a longing to stay, or return. I hope you do.

Today I'd like to share with you some words and images from my son, Conrad Young (Hawken '15), who visited Kunming last year while studying in Beijing with School Year Abroad. During his Senior Project at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Islamic Art Department in May, he was given the opportunity to reflect on the intersection of Chinese and Islamic art in the Met's RumiNations blog. Central to his exploration of the similarities and interplay between these two cultural expressions is his experience in Kunming.

I actually hope you don't read this until you get home (because I hope you're too immersed in where you are this moment that you don't have time to read my post). But, if you are reading this while in Kunming, be sure to look deeply and around the next corner for something that looks out of place. Check it out. It just might be a gem: an example of cultures intersecting and lives intertwined. You never know where it might take you next!
