[post_content] => Dear Family and Friends,

The group's flight was delayed because of weather in Beijing but has now landed in Hong Kong. The flight from Beijing arrived too late for the group to make their original connecting flight and they have now been reassigned to Cathay Pacific flight CX882, leaving Hong Kong at 4:35 PM June 28th (local time) and arriving in Los Angeles at 2:55 PM, June 28th (local time).

Dragons Home Office will be in touch through this yak board and directly as needed to help coordinate and communicate with students and families of students with onward domestic travel from Los Angeles.

Wishing instructor Martha and all of our students a safe trip home!

Best regards,

Dragons Administration

[post_content] => Our previous experiences in this country pale in comparison to the breathtaking sight ahead. An external spine rising out of the hills, the Wall stands before us imposing and impossibly long. We are young. We are small. This place will endure long past our time. Those that came before us and those who will come after will embrace the same energy we encountered in our night here.

While the temperature is mercifully cool, the humidity still leaves our clothing and blankets uncomfortably sticky. As we lie on the unforgiving stone guard tower, most of us with little more than a thin sheet for protection, there is an overwhelming realization of the privileges we have back home. In this space many of us are as vulnerable as we will ever be. The feeling is humbling.

When we reached the top we could see our pasts and our futures placed before us in the treacherous mountains and distant fields. As darkness settled on the Wall, we had a moment to pause and reflect on the constantly shifting courses of our lives. This is China. It is wild and ancient, beautiful and dangerous. Our time here made us push ourselves past what we thought was imaginable. It made us question our lives at home and grow in our individual understandings of the world.

It is memories like these that we still consider dreams that define what happened on this trip. There is no forgetting a night spent on one of the great wonders of the world. There is no forgetting China.

[post_content] => As we enter the final week of our trip, we begin the expedition phase, where the students plan and budget three days of travel within the city. Within in this period we hope to explore as much of Beijing as possible. We arrive in Beijing on July 23 after a twenty-four hour train ride from Northern Tibet and arrive at the p-loft youth hostel. On the morning of July 24 we travel to the Forbidden City, which the entire city is built around, spending time exploring the massive complex and the surrounding Tianamen Square. In the afternoon we will travel to 798 art district on the northeast outskirts of the city, a one time factory district that now houses many artists and studios. On the morning of July 25 we will travel to the summer palace, then in the afternoon travel to many markets and sites near to our hostel, such as the recently restored Confucious Temple and Lama Temple. After our expedition phase we will spend the last days of our trip at the Great Wall reflecting on what we have seen and done.

Our team is currently gliding through the Chinese countryside, en route via train from Xining to Beijing, our final stop. While many of you may have heard of the epic "standing" ride we did from south China north, we were able to secure "hard sleepers" for this leg of the journey. Hard sleepers are bunk beds within the car carriage and include tables, fold out seats, and sinks in the toilet area! Luxury. Students wrapped up their homestays on the 20th and were all gifted "Kata", traditional Tibetan scarves given at times of meeting, parting, and to signify blessing. We spent one day in Rebgong hanging out with a group of Tibetan summer school students and visiting a local prayer wheel site. (Apparently the local village had been plagued by a water daemon about 200 years ago. The highest Lama from the nearby monastery trapped the spirit under the creek's large rocks and the wheels are turned by the flow of water, each revolution activating the hundreds of prayers written on pieces of paper inside.) Haley and Julia rounded out our time in Qinghai Province with the first student led day by taking us up a mountain and on visit to a Thanka painting school. They did a great job negotiating the budget and logistics and working with the rest of their team, including Myke and Hannah as translators, Louie as travel guru, and Gabi as budget master. The new student leaders are busy finalizing our itinerary and budget for their "X-Phase" in Beijing, two days run entirely by students. We have great confidence in their ability to work together and employ what they have learned on the trip so far for an excellent adventure. (And we are excited to see them step fully into their roles!)       [post_title] => Train part deux [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => train-part-deux [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2015-07-22 11:41:57 [post_modified_gmt] => 2015-07-22 17:41:57 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://wheretherebedragons.com/?p=123030 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw [categories] => Array ( [0] => WP_Term Object ( [term_id] => 80 [name] => China Comprehensive 4-week [slug] => china-comprehensive-4-week-summer-2015 [term_group] => 0 [term_taxonomy_id] => 80 [taxonomy] => category [description] => [parent] => 255 [count] => 59 [filter] => raw [term_order] => 5.1 [cat_ID] => 80 [category_count] => 59 [category_description] => [cat_name] => China Comprehensive 4-week [category_nicename] => china-comprehensive-4-week-summer-2015 [category_parent] => 255 [link] => https://my.wheretherebedragons.com/category/summer-2015/china-comprehensive-4-week-summer-2015/ ) ) [category_links] => China Comprehensive 4-week )

[post_content] => Normally, when I think of monks, I think of the peaceful old dudes who we met at Er Fo Si. Never could I have ever imagined the absolute NBA quality basketball finesse of the local buddhist monk. He gave us no name, which all added to his mysterious persona of peace and love.

He knew one English word; a word that knew no political boundaries. This word only served to unite us all: Basketball.

His dress was also as unique as his personality. Like every monk, he wore his red and yellow robes. However, as one more keenly observed his attire, he or she might notice the brand new nike air Jordans with hot red stripes; shoes which even the average American dreams of.

Oftentimes, when a complete stranger asks you to get in the car and offers to ferry you off to an unknown location, American education strictly prohibits this carelessness. Despite this, our instincts were to fight for seats in the car. Soon, we were moving. We knew not where, we knew not any, and we had no idea how to get back. Within 10 minutes, we had arrived at our destination: the street courts of Tongren.

Our team, despite its American heritage and relatively tall height, somehow managed to professionally display our complete incompetence in the sport of basketball. While the other team, which consisted of 4 Chinese highschoolers and a buddhist monk, had fear in their eyes upon seeing, but they left the court completely and utterly dumbfounded by their overestimation of our skill. That is the story of the tragedy at Tongren.

[post_content] => I wiggle my toes around, testing the nest of blankets I'd haphazardly thrown together. I'm skirting around the edges of sleep when it occurs to me that I ought to get up and use the bathroom before I'm totally out. But it's cold. But these blankets are soft. But I really just don't want to move. But I would definitely regret that decision later. Standing on the unforgiving tile patio, I fail to appreciate the solace and simplicity of the moment. Instead, I'm only stuck with one semi-coherent thought: Dang it's cold. I'm not known for my eloquence at twelve in the morning. With all of the grace and stealth I can manage, I tip-toe my way across the room and push open the sliders. This is not to say I am actually graceful and stealthy. More likely than not, I sounded like a bull crashing through a China Shop (pun intended). Although I might have woken up the entire neighborhood in the process, I eventually make it outside. The flailing was worth it. The scene before me is truly a feast for the senses. I gaze up and am greeted by the most beautiful image I've seen these past two weeks. Brilliant diamonds are sewn across the night sky. Rich inky blue swaddles the darkened landscape. There is an etherial haze. I am in awe. The world is so big and I am so small and what on Earth am I doing here? I am in a small village in China, living with some of the kindest strangers I've met, experiencing a lifestyle I can barely comprehend. I am alone. I am calm. I am lucky.
