[post_content] => We have come to our final couple days in Bolivia and, consequently, reflection time. This has been a long month. We have visited 6 cities, made two treks, spent a week in a homestay.. And the whole time we were in this 14 people group.

But what have I learned from this?

Well, I have certainly learned something about bolivian politics and culture. After this experience, my vision about social diversity and inclusion feels much more complete, and I´m going to take home this notion, that Bolivia well demonstrates, that a country has different people, who besides their differences must be equal in relation terms and work together for whatever they want to built.

But I think my biggest learning from this trip, that I feel has changed something in me (at least today, hopefully tomorrow), relates to group and individual relationing.

I must confess sometimes it was hard being together as a group. We all have our own problems and sometimes we don´t know exactly how to put them into words and make ourself availables to be helped; or how to help your companions when theirs problems seem so personal (what means "out of my reach" more than it should).

One thing I learned and I will try to carry in my home relations is to always make myself available to help and be helped, because I have the power of helping just by being myself; and because people are understanding, and althought problems are personal, humanity carries this beautiful capacity of putting ourselves into someones position and for carrying for them. Being authenthic, expressing the right words and smiling can have a huge impact on ourselves and other people. Another thing I´m carrying home is that there is never a true story about something. Things are the incomplete stories we made out of them. For everything there is another story from which we can learn from and strenghten our vision about it.This country and this group will be remembered for the great moments we shared and carried thru my future actions; which will carry a bit of them since they are now a part of my history.

[post_content] => I can´t believe I have made it this far in the trip. First thing that I want to start with is giving thanks to my amazing group, my caring instructors, to all the generous Bolivians I have meet, nature, and everything else that came into this amazing trip. Bolivia has been and still is a place were reflection always came into my head everyday of this trip. My deep reflection process all started with my amzing homestay family about two weeks ago, it was there where I realize something bigger than anything else. I wrote a little speech to all of our homestay family on our last day in Cochabamba which said ¨ Buenas Tardes o Sumaj tarde. Pachi!¨ Since this small little speech I gave that night, I knew right away that I can´t take my family for geranted.¨Ellos son la razon porque uno como persona trabaja duro y le hecha ganas todos los dias¨, this line goes through my head everyday. I do alot of things to benefit myself like go to school and be successful in life but now with new term of solidarity in Bolvia I know that now I do everything to honor my family and to have a better living status for me and my family.. Before this trip, I never notice the little things my parents did for me so I never said thanks. Now on these last day in Bolivia I need to give thanks to all the Bolivians and the beautiful mountains that gave me peace and realization to this important thing in my life. My family is everything and now I have no words to thanks this great small country with big hearts.

[post_content] => Hey y´all! Our incredible course is unfortunately coming to a close. It´s unbelievable, the amount of things we´ve seen and accomplished together in the last 4 weeks! We started off as complete strangers, coming together from vastly differet parts of the US (and Brazil). Now, it´s hard to contemplate that there was even a time in my life that I didn´t know these 13 beautiful souls. It´s hard to live so closely with strangers, but despite every complication, we´ve come out of it a strong, close group. I´ve made so many friendships here that I know will last for many years.

I´m happy to say that I´ve changed for the better in these past weeks, in so many ways that it can hardly be put into words. You´d think that learning about different cultures would make one believe in the vast diversity of human nature. Instead, it´s caused me to see the similarities and connections that ebb and flow between people all over the globe. I´ve also learned more about the value of emotional intelligence; at the beginning of the course, I wasn´t really aware of the advantages of understanding one´s own emotions. Now, although I´m still awful with identifying my own emotions, I´ve gotten a lot more open with what I´m feeling. I´ve learned that what you feel can never be wrong, and I´ve learned this largely because of the support of my incredible group. I´m so excited to arrive back home with an invisible network connecting me to my new friends across the Americas! Also excited for that burger though!

[post_content] => I can think of so many little things about me that have changed for the better because of this trip, like looking for things I love in people, thinking a lot less about social media and appearances, being more mindful, and looking for the deeper meaning in small situations to see how it applies to my life in more general words. However, the overarching theme of change is: not just sticking to or gravitating towards what I know and what is comfortable. It´s comfortable for me to write my journal entries and communicate mostly in English, but I´ve learned to push myself into the ´learning zone´. I know how comfortable I feel hanging out with friends who are similar to people I already love and to me, and to spend time only with them. In this group, I was reluctant at first to form bonds with the type of people I wasn´t used to, but soon I saw more and more characteristics that I connected with in everyone as long as I gave them time to express themselves. Instead of being quick to judge someone as not my friend, I learned to let the little things about them that I didn´t agree with or were unfamiliar pass because there was something about every single person that surprised and amazed me. The gravitating towards comfort thing also applies to food, my homestay, and my everyday conversations with the group about the USA. Towards the end of the trip, I´ve found that I feel happier thinking about Bolivia, being reflective, and just living in the moment rather than thinking about how I wish I was at home and missing my family, bed, and food.

[post_content] => To whomever it may concern,

With 3 days left on my trip, I am caught in a state of dumbfoundedness. Where did my trip go? One moment I was climbing a mountain and the next I was participating in a theater workshop at Teatro Trono in El Alto. What the heck? I remember a few weeks ago waiting at La Paz airport for a flight to Sucre on our very first day in Bolivia. That seems like it happened only a few days ago. The theme of this yak is to express how this trip has changed you, but like my title, my changing is still a work in progress. I think a person can really only see the change in themselves when one is back in their former environment. With this being my last yak post, I would like to say thank you yak followers for going on the roller coaster ride called Bolivia with us students for the last 4 weeks. And I can assure you all, I will be thinking about how this trip has changed me for days, months, and years to come. Cheers!

[post_content] => The biggest lesson I´ve learned during my four weeks in Bolivia has been that verbal communication is incredibly overrated. Some of my favorite moments on this trip have been spent in silence. And sometimes the strongest bonds between people form because of, not in spite of, language barriers. I´ve also learned how to immerse myself in a different culture sensitively and respectfully, and how to share some of my own culture while maintaining that sensitivity. I´ve learned about the Bolivian concept of solidarity, how it´s considered rude not to share your food with absolutely everyone in the room.

Before we left Cochabamba I spent a couple of hours drawing the flags of different countries with my homestay sisters. The oldest one, Daniella, spontaneously drew a Bolivian flag (¨para mi¨) and an American flag (¨para ti¨) together underneath a rainbow. I don´t think she gave the drawing much thought (after she finished it she absently threw it into the pile of mermaid drawings that was accumulating on the floor of my room) but I was struck by how easy it was for a 7-year-old to paint a picture of peace between two countries. In that moment, to the two of us coexistence between different peoples was a very simple concept, even though, as we´ve learned on this trip, political relations are so complex and peace can seem like a distant dream, or even utterly impossible to attain. I kept this moment in mind as we continued to learn about Bolivia´s history and political struggles.

I immediately fell in love with Bolivia from the moment I stepped off the plane at the La Paz airport, which has an an entire wall´s worth of window through which we could see the snowcapped Andes mountains. Our treks, our visits to Sucre and El Alto, our homestays in Cochabamba, our brief visit to Lake Titicaca, and our transference time in the Yungas (cloud forests), have all confirmed and increased my sense of attachment to this beautiful country and have left me ¨con ganas de regrasar.¨ Thank you for this incredible experience!

Hasta pronto
