    [post_content] => Dear parents and friends, our students have been busy with their ISPs and Chinese learning in Kunming. Some of them might invite you to play mahjong when they get back, some might surprise you by cooking extraordinary Chinese food, some might show you Chinese martial arts. But mothers and sisters, you might get some really nice handmade jewelry. We are heading to Fu Xian Lake tomorrow and then off to Beijing. I can't believe we've almost come to the end, those great pictures and stories that they are bringing home will explain our adventures together perfectly.

Enjoy our video of week 3, sorry for the delay and here is the link: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNzQ1MDUyNjQ0.html

    [post_content] => Hi again!

Everyone here is having a great time, and although we miss home, we are sad to be nearing the end of the trip! We got to Kunming a little over a week ago and everyone was paired up with a host family. My host family has an 11 year old daughter, which is pretty cool because she is the exact same age as my real little sister. Her (English) name is Sarah and I am endlessly fascinated by how busy her life is! It's summer, and every day she has math, Chinese, English and piano lessons, as well as a lot of homework. Some host family highlights have included tea shopping/tasting with my parents, a trip to nearby hotsprings (including a milk hotspring, which was pretty interesting), going to a ton of Sarah's piano concerts (she is basically a piano prodigy), endless family get togthers (I have been going to bed very late every night because my family consistently has parties or friends over), a trip with some family friends to a wholesale flower market, and seeing a ballet show called Dynamic Yunnan with Sarah. I am going to miss my family when I leave, and hopefully we will stay in touch! The picture attached is of Sarah, her two best friends and I at the flower market the other day. We do pretty much everything with the two other girls' families, so it is almost like I have 3 little sisters, which is a lot of fun!

When we are not with our host families (which is pretty much every day from 8:30 to 5) we have Chinese classes in the morning, and usually we go out into Kunming in the afternoon, whether it be for a planned activity, free time, or to our ISPs. Kunming is becoming increasingly modern, and I have been fascinated by old markets (like the Bird and Flower Market we have been to a few times) set against the backdrop of new apartment buildings and fancy shopping centers. I particularly love Kunming's little alleyways and the stalls that sell everything from bao zi to roast duck to jewelry to shirts with random English words on them.

Its hard to believe that we have a little less than a week left in China...what a whirlwind this month has been!

See you soon!!! (Also sorry my email stopped working)

    [post_content] => Walking to school in the morning, I pass a group of elderly woman, clad in sun-visors and heavily cushioned flip flops dancing to what sounds like Chinese covers of popular 80's songs. I presume this has been going on long before I arrived in Kunming a little over a week ago, and will continue after I leave in a few days. The ladies are surprisingly inclusive; they never reject my pathetic attempts at following along. The experience is mutually comical. I find it funny that this group of woman gather daily and dance to traditional Chinese music as well as some mashup that is reminiscent of the song Safety Dance, and they find it funny that an American boy, whom claims to be part Chinese- although his face and speaking abilities provide no evidence - is so keen on joining them.

I am impressed by these woman, not because they're half-decent at doing simple dances, but because they don't feel self-conscious at all while doing them in the middle of a crowded square. Same goes for the old men doing squats in the street - I don't find it particularly pleasant that they pull their shirts over their bellies and drop it low on the sidewalk but I appreciate that they don't care what I or anybody thinks. Equally curious to me is the fact that almost every inch of free space in Kunming, and all the other cities I've been to, is occupied with these half-playground half-gym facilities. They're not very effective for actually exercising, but they're damn fun to play on. Everyday before class, everyone spends at least five minutes screwing around on the machines. If I could be told one government secret, it would be how much funding was spent on constructing those things. Until then, I'll just keep swinging around on them.
