    [post_content] => Sus'dei from Kratie!  As I write, our group is having their final pre-homestay Khmer lesson, drinking iced coffees and watching the Mekong pass by.  We'll soon be hopping on boats with CRDT and by evening will be situated in our homestay on Koh Pdao, the largest Cambodian Mekong island.  I am so impressed at what a thoughtful, engaged, and curious group of educators we have with us!

We'll be offline for a few days as we move into the pace of rural life, but watch this space for photos and stories of our time in Kratie later in the week!

    [post_content] => It seems somehow impossible that today is only our 6th day here, because in my mind we've been here for at least 12 days, if not 14. With each day so full and varied, time stretches out across the multitude of activities, while also speeding past like the streetscape from my tuk tuk vantage point.

Even this morning feels like three days ago. We began our day with iced sweet coffee and steaming noodles, as we met over breakfast with staff from the National Development Institute (NDI) and the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, two NGOs based here in Phnom Penh. To say that it was fascinating to hear their perspectives on development, politics, and environmental issues hardly begins to capture the conversation. We lingered for hours over the tiniest cups of fragrant tea, and easily could have stayed even longer.

Instead, after a brief Khmer lesson from Mara, we piled into tuk tuks and headed to Cambodia Living Arts, a nonprofit focused on community arts and capacity building. Four dancers performed classical and folk dances for us with the most incredible grace and skill. Afterwards, they gave us a short (and quite humbling!) dance lesson, and we shared jackfruit, lychee, and other snacks before we said goodbye.

Over lunch, we had some downtime -- some of us explored the Russian Market while others enjoyed amazing massages. From there, we went to the Documentary Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam), where we watched the moving documentary A River Changes Course. Back at Star Wood afterwards, our debrief conversation could have, again, lasted for hours. This seemingly endless flow of conversation and ideas has been a wonderful thread weaving our moments and days together.

With our minds filled with inspiring ideas, we headed to Romdeng to fill our bellies... fried tarantulas for dinner!

    [post_content] => We are on our last full day in Phnom Penh, and it has been a very intense, wonderful, enjoyable, ride so far. This team of educators has bonded in really special ways, and I am pleased to say that we feel as ready as we can be to head up north to our rural homestay experience tomorrow night. This morning we are going to meet for breakfast with some NGO partners to learn about Governance and Land Rights in Cambodia, then for a special treat learning about preserving Cambodian arts and cultural heritage, and then to learn more about the documentation process of the Khmer Rouge genocide in the afternoon.  We are finding each educator on this trip really teaching each other, and learning from each other. There is so much to share but so little time, so....more later!

    [post_content] => Jum-reap suo everyone! (Dear all)

I am so excited to read everyone’s intros and thrilled to learn about everone background. I apologize for the late introduction. My name is Mara Pho. I have been been working for the Cambodia Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport for more than six years, mostly as a high school teacher. Currently, I work at the Department of Vocational Orientation with the Ministry of Education; our main task is to promote Technical Education at Upper Secondary School Level in Cambodia.

I received a Bachelor Degree of Education, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). My professional background pretty much centers arround Education-- teaching English as a second language. I have taught English at both public and private institutions for about eight years.

I joined Dragons community in the summer of 2006. I have co-led a number of Dragons courses mostly in Cambodia. It is my first time to participate in the Cambodia Educator Course. I have heard many great things about it. And I am super excited to be a part of it this summer.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone soon!

    [post_content] => Hi,

I’m a relatively new addition to this trip, but I’m ready for a whirlwind experience! This is my first time traveling to Asia, but I’ve spent lots of time traveling and living in other parts of the world. As for my life at home, I regularly wow students with the awesomeness of Earth Science and Biology at Lakewood High School in the Denver area and I’ve been doing this for about 5 years. I’m a runner, a reader, a musician, and professional nerd.

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and having a good time, learning, and exploring a new place.

See you in Phnom Penh,

Heidi

I am so excited to be coming on this trip!  Like our instructor, Maryann, I too am connected to the SOAS as I graduated from their program in Violence, Conflict, and Development back in 2007.  I am currently a teacher in the Middle School at an independent school here in NYC and I am very eager to leverage what I gain from this trip to lead service learning programs and initiate discussions about global citizenship, democracy, and development.  I look forward to connecting with local people and exchanging ideas with you all.

See you next week!
