[post_content] => While in Ladakh, there has not been a single day that my Acha-la (my home stay mother in Dharamsala) has not been in my thoughts. I constantly found myself staring at the Himalayas and wondering what her and Kandu were doing in that very moment. Every day while I was staying with her she made sure to tell me how much Ladakh looks like Tibet, and I cannot get the look in her eyes as she told me that out of my head. At Lake Tso Moriri, where we were just a few days ago, we were only 35 or 40 km away from the Tibetan border. And every time I looked at the mountains I knew were visible on the other side of that border, that look in my Acha-la's eyes hit me even harder.
Six weeks ago, Tibet never even crossed my mind. Six weeks ago, I barely even knew that there was any kind of issue in Tibet. I was never taught it in school, and I never heard about it on the news. Yet after all of the stories I have heard and all of the people that I have met, this might be weird to say, but it's starting to feel like a big part of who I am.

[post_content] => These last 5 weeks have been WOW. Being back in Leh thinking about the past has been a bit overwhelming; I definitely couldn't write a cohesive summary right now even if I tried. Instead, here are two clips from my journal from my two favorite parts of the trip so far: our short home-stay in Dhomkhar, and the retreat at Khasbang. (Sorry it's so long...)

July 22, Monday, 2013, 7:44am

I woke up at 6:45ish to Grandma praying. I lay in bed because I didn't know what to do, but is was so nice. This place is so calming (so calming, in fact, that I just collected a 1-5!). I believe the boys are at school already. So I went to the kitchen where I found Gmom and Achei jchillin. I sat down and Achei asked in clear English if I would like to drink boiled water ("I can't speak English" like heck! Yesterday, when I offered to help her make dinner using the simplest words and wild hand gestures, Achei was like, "I can't speak English" and wouldn't let me help. What the heck, you tricky little lady. Sometime soon I'm going to help you and you won't be able to back out, ha!). OK so then I had the boiled water and Achei also gave me a cup of glorious chai. I finished that off quickly, sheepishly hoping for some more, when what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a full cup of butter tea! a;lksdjfliuhbaklj;seroij I pretended to write in this so I wouldn't have to drink it... until I remembered that butter tea is 10x worse when cold, and that I shouldn't be rude. I took a tinnyyy sip and immediately Achei was pouring me more! Woman! Can you read the signs??Anyways, um, everything else about this homestay is nice: it's pretty and there are people here. The end.

(side note: now I really really love butter tea)

August 4, Saturday, 16:43, 2013

Here I am, in the Shrine Room of Khasbang monastery for my solo. To be honest, when I first entered the room by myself, I was frightened. Was it breaking some sort of rule to be a female, stinky, non-ordained teenager in this room? More than 1000 prostrations must have been done right here by high lamas and committed Buddhists, a stark contrast from myself. I carefully sat down in a corner, trying to take up as little room as possible. Actually, I'm still in the corner writing this... The wind keeps blowing the red curtain of the door into the room, and I jump everytime, thinking the Dalai Lama has come to reprimand me for sitting wrong or something. Gah. I'm going to try meditating, we'll see if that will calm me down.

(side note: I ended up relaxing, and actually chatted with a few monks for a while. Best experience!)

[post_content] => No matter how much you enjoy your experiences abroad, you'll miss your home from time to time.

Occasionally I find myself thinking about my own bed and my own shower. My food and my family. My fresh clothing, my couch, my backyard, my trees, and my sense of security. It's inevitable that you'll miss your domain from time to time.

But every time my mind has wandered back to Princeton, I can't shake the feeling of guilt. It's not wrong or absurd for me to miss home now and then, but spending over a month with refugees tilts your perspective.

In these past few weeks, I have met monks, survivors, merchants, a really cool poet, and the people who let me in to their home. All of these people are Tibetan refugees or their children.

I have a home to return to. When my flight lands in Newark, I'll head for Princeton knowing that I have a place that belongs to me waiting for me.

Now my mind is on all these people who I've met, trying to make better lives for themselves, some of them fighting to have their home back. The place where they belong was taken from them, and nations that pride themselves in being bastions of liberty couldn't care less.

I find myself thinking of the younger Tibetans, some not much older than I am. Some of them are activists, raising awareness about China's insurrection. While I'll be going to college and sitting comfortably in my home, these people will be fighting for the home they've never seen.

I don't have the right to miss a home that will always be there when I need it to be.

No matter how much you enjoy your experiences abroad, you’ll miss your home from time to time. Occasionally I find myself thinking about my own bed and my own shower. My food and my family. My fresh clothing, my couch, my backyard, my trees, and my sense of security. It’s inevitable that you’ll miss your […]

[post_content] => Its hard to believe that in just two days we will be heading back to Delhi, and saying goodbye to India. When people ask me how m trip to India was, I want to respond "India was great, but the Tibetan plateau was even better."  Our past two weeks in Ladakh have been truly incredible. From our home-stay in Dhom khar, where we participated in the picking and drying of apricots, as well as many other village activities, to our trek and time spent at Tso Moriri, one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

These past couple of days, we have spent at the Khaspang Hermitage meditating, learning about Buddhism, and reflecting on the time that we have spent together. Yesterday, during a four hour solo hike, I had the opportunity to reflect on group discussions of Buddhist philosophy. Perched on a rock, half way up a mountain covered in trails made by grazing Dzomos (a cross between a yak and a cow), I felt very connected with the natural environment around me. During the philosophy talks, we discussed how all beings are interconnected, and can be traced back to the beginning of time. Sitting on the mountain, I could truly feel the interconnectedness of all beings. Looking up at the sky that night, an experience which normally leaves me feeling minuscule, I truly felt a connection with  the universe: because my atoms come from those stars. That's really what we want in life: to feel connected, and to be apart of something bigger than ourselves.  While it will be sad to leave India in a couple of days, I will always feel a connection to the places we visited, especially Ladakh.

[post_content] => After 2 weeks of total internet blackout, we're finally back in Leh. In that time I've hiked through passes, seen 3 shooting stars, and gotten more than a bit sunburned ("more than a bit" being a colossal understatement) along with countless other experiences and new friendships that wouldn't fit into one yak post (or 5 posts for that matter).

Before coming to North India, I had no preconceived expectations. What I did know was that my mind had a tendency to jump from place to place, topic to topic, with no center to quiet it. Finding that center, that place where I could go to find inner peace (cliche I know) was one of my central goals, not even to find complete inner peace, for many people with far more will power than I have dedicated their lives to that goal, and I've only had 6 weeks. I can only hope to attain some measure of success, forcing myself to be here now.

With so little time left and so many emotions going through my head, I'll end with some choice words from The Verve.

I can change, I can change, I can change

But I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold

[post_content] => Whilst the Buddhist concept of impermanence has been both a prominent topic of discussion and a lingering concept in my mind for the pas six weeks, I have only recently contemplated it in  relation to the trip itself.

I am confident in saying that I have been to one of the few remaining places on earth where - still - there be dragons. However, this will not last. As Genghis Khan's once vast empire fell from grace, so too will the Tibetan Plateau -perhaps (due to countless causes and conditions) transforming into a low-lying sea or gargantuan rain forest. Through contemplation I have come to accept the fact that even the most stubborn and enduring structures, both in our minds and our world, will ultimately evaporate as well.

Eventually, I will likely forget the experiences of my 2013 adventure in India and only be able to recollect fleeting images, sounds and sensations from my time here. This saddens me but I take solace in the fact that the fickle ephemeral nature of reality is the very thing that gives it value; in the same way that we value our loved ones because we know that our time with them is finite.

Apologies for the morose tone.

Much love from the Roof of the World,

[post_content] => Meditation is hard...Seriously, I have so much respect for people who devote their lives to living in retreat and practicing everyday. I wouldn't be able to do it for more than the four days we've had.

During our solo time yesterday I realized how close we are to the end of this trip. One of our assignments was to reflect on the past five weeks that we've been together, and honestly it feels like we are still in the first or second week. While I miss home and am very excited to see my family and friends again, I can't help but feel slightly depressed about leaving my new found family

We have had so many experiences and been together 24/7, its hard to break away so suddenly. I can't help but fear that I won't see everyone together again... But remembering the awesome times we've had in every setting, I get the feeling that I won't be seeing the last of these people....

I don't know how I will be able to communicate the experience I've had. The food, the people, the hotels, our home-stays, and everything in between (which is A LOT).

James said yesterday that his friend told him "not to count down the days, but to make them count". So that's what I'm going to try to do.

Despite the sadness above, I am truly happy to be in Leh at last! I've been dreaming of the shower and the mattress. Feelin' clean and feelin' happy.

This is Christine saying a bittersweet see ya!
