Hey folks, thought I’d get the ball rolling on the introductions since I’m beyond psyched to get to know all of you. I’m Markita & I hail from Mill Valley, CA, right across the Golden Gate from San Francisco. I’m an only child if you don’t count my poodle or goldfish, and next year I’ll be a senior in high school. I mountain bike, have impossible-to-get-rid-of Birkenstocks tan lines, make my pals mix tapes & collages (though I may feel iffy about colleges), do journalism and documentary film-making in school, worship Frida Kahlo, love spoken word poetry and writing in general, and have tried my hand, with mixed success, at pottery, dance, and horticulture. I was drawn to Dragons because all I can so far identify about my future is that I want to have a positive impact on as many people and places as possible—always keeping in mind that my interpretation of “positive” is certainly not universal, and that I have much to learn. Getting good & ready for a rad, spiritual, educational summer, and looking forward to getting my hands back in the soil! xox [post_title] => ¡Hola, future amigos! We are excited to share with you our itinerary for this summer.  As life is dynamic, and at Dragons we love to embrace the daily rhythms of change and flow, please understand that this itinerary is flexible and adaptable.  While we will be sticking pretty close to what is written here, we might find ourselves and our itinerary changing as the course progresses.  And of course, what is possible to write here can never come close to the specialness of the actual lived experience that awaits us. Until then...

June 28: Our journey starts at the Miami airport--a place just hours from Nicaragua but culturally worlds away. Chris and Adelaide will be meeting you all there and together we will fly over the remaining parts of North America, into the heart of Central America. After our Nicaragua touch-down, we will be greeted by Dhyana, have dinner, and spend the night in Managua before an early morning journey over the waters of Lake Nicaragua to the large volcanic island of Ometepe.

June 29- July 3: Our course begins at an organic coffee cooperative on the side of a lush volcano, learning about the cooperative and one another.  We will spend our time setting collective and individual goals, learning about travel and about our host country, bonding as a group, and acclimating ourselves to this new place and new pace.  We then head over to an impressive permaculture center working to support food security on the island.  We will learn about the techniques they use and get our hands dirty and back sweaty putting knowledge into practice. This will also be the site of our first short homestay.

July 4-6:  After departing from the Island and travelling north by way of the Pan-American highway to the city of Esteli, we will spend part of a day there getting ready to walk to our next destination! We will be following the migration route once tread by families fleeing the city which was under attack by the country’s former dictator, Somoza, who’s wrath fell upon them full force after there had been successful organized rebel uprisings which preceded the eventual overthrow of the Somoza government in 1978. We will trek by day and stay with families along the way who have kindly offered to provide us with shelter from the rainy nights, rest for our tired feet, food for our bellies and food for thought by way of their powerful testimonies.

July 7-20:  On our third and last day of the trek we reach our destination, El Lagartillo. This town, which was tragically affected during the war, is filled with charismatic, radical individuals who are excited to welcome us into their homes and share their lives, stories, and ideas with us. They have a history of international solidarity work and have started a local co-op that runs a small Spanish school where you will be studying Spanish. It will also be our second homestay of time trip.  This will be an extended two-week opportunity to integrate yourself with very special families and an incredibly unique community.  In the early morning you may choose to work in the fields with your homestay family. During the day, you will study Spanish and participate in an integrated permaculture service project, and in the evenings spend time with your new families in their humble solar-powered homes. In our free time, students might wish to play music with the local band, watch plays put on by their socially-conscious theater troop, help build a cob home, or take a walk to swim in a gorgeous waterfall. On the weekend we may have the opportunity to take a water adventure at  the Somoto Canyon, or else visit  natural reserve about 15km south of Esteli. The tiny but picturesque town of La Garnacha is well known for its efforts to strengthen its own economy through community work, diversification of crops, and its highly specialized production of goat milk and cheese.

July 21-23:  Our next stop is San Marcos where the inspiring workers of Los Quinchos meet us. Los Quinchos is a radical organization that works with the kids who live in La Chureca, the largest city dump in Central America. They have three sites where kids are moved through a progression where they learn self-esteem and self-love, community integration, and finally skills for employment. We will visit the sites where these children now live, learn about the unique history and theories of this organization, then have some time for longer conversations and getting to know one another on a backpacking trip with the youth.

July 24-27: And finally we travel together to a serene volcano crater lake, Laguna Apoyo, to spend our final days together processing all that we have experienced and learned and preparing for our return home.

July 28: Return home...

Dear world travelers,
I can't wait to meet each and every one of you. I already have much respect for you, for you have decided to take the path less chosen. You have decided to venture outside of your comfort zones and undertake an experience that will surely change you. You will be challenged, you will triumph, you will find deep friendships, you will learn. I you will do and be so much. I will join Adelaide in commending each of you.
I can't tell you how excited I am to share with you one of the most awe-inspiring, adventurous, and beautiful places I've ever known. I fell in love with Nicaragua ten years ago when I visited the country through a program similar to Dragons. Its sincere, genuine people, its rich, mind-bending history, its stark beauty: all of it captured me and I have called the land of lakes and volcanoes my second home for some time now. The courage and tenacity of el pueblo de Nicaragua (the Nicaraguan people) continues to move me to this day. I have no doubt that you will find the spirit of the land infectious. It is with sheer delight that I introduce you to a place that holds such a special place in my heart.
I would eventually end up moving to Nicaragua and working on various development projects, primarily helping small farmers climb out of dismal poverty. Yet, as we will learn, I would come to find out that the impact of our projects was surely debatable. My interest in social justice did not waver, though. The focus, however, did. I later found myself attending Naropa University, from which I recently graduated with an MA in Psychotherapy. Don't worry, I won't be psychanalyzing anyone. I do have a genuine interest in people, though, and look forward to knowing all of you in a genuine way. In short, my passion for helping the marginalized led me to contemplate the etiology of injustice, which I believe has much to do with psychology. Between us three instructors, the knowledge you already possess, and the wisdom that Nicaraguans will share with us, the intellectual journey you will embark on will be very, very rich.
I am very much looking forward to your personal introductions. Don't be shy! You will come to each group member in a very deep way, so you might as well start now! I'm curious who you are, what your hobbies are, what your fears are about the trip, what your goals are. Please do share.
You will be with us for a month. And while this might seem like a long time, I promise you it will fly by and before you know it the experience will have ended. You will be back home, back in school, back in the daily rhythms of your life. I therefore invite you all, as well as myself, to really suck the marrow out of the experience, to live it fully! You will not regret it.
Sincerely looking forward to meeting you all! Please don't hesitate to pose questions on this board!
Chris

Dearest fellow future travel companions, As the days get close enough that we can actually begin a proper count-down, my excitement for the up-coming journey deepens.  It’s been almost a year since I last tasted gallo pinto, listed to revolutionary trova music, breathed in the fresh smell of tropical forests, graced my vision with glimpses of multiple volcanoes in the same vista, or planted coffee beans in fresh soil.  Ah yes, it’s due time I return to Nicaragua!  And how exciting that I will be making this next journey with YOU, my about-to-be-made friend.  In just two months we will travel together on a grand adventure that will likely make impressions that will last a lifetime. It is a brave and beautiful move to be willing to give up a month of your summer--a month with your comfortable bed, your familiar foods, your familiar social systems...your life as you know it.  Very few young adults are willing to do this and I commend you for it.  In exchange, you will receive an adventure you will remember for the rest of your life!  You will be challenged, awed, impressed, saddened, amazed, and inspired.  You will experience a rainbow of emotions and you will see and do things that most people only dream about.  How do I know all of this?  Because this will be my 13th Dragons trip and it happens every time.  It happens to the students, and it happens to me.  And its because of both of those reasons that I keep coming back for more.  Being a part of the Dragons community is one of the biggest highlights of my life and I am thrilled to be able to share this experience with you all. My name is Adelaide Nalley and I have the honor of being your Course Director this year in Nicaragua.  I would like to share with you all a bit about myself and how I ended up on this course with you all.  Nine years ago I was living in LA and participating in a life that I had seamlessly created for myself. It was by most definitions a successful life.  I had graduated from a prestigious university with honors, gotten a well-paying job working for positive social change, and then received a fellowship to go to yet another well-known university for grad school.  I had thought of myself as a happy person but one day I realized that my life had sort of just happened TO me.  The flow was natural and easy but where had I actively participated in creating my own reality?  I hadn't.  Everything I did was based on underlying cultural assumptions of how I should be living and what I should be doing.  I realized I wanted something more.  I wanted to be more active in the creation of MY life, the only one I get.  But I didn't know how to do this.  Even though I had spent years studying sociology and social construction, I didn't know how to deconstruct my own reality and see what all of my taken-for-granted assumptions were.  This is hard to do from the comforts of your own home. So I decided to venture out.  I sold most of my belongings and randomly bought a ticket to Guatemala.  I had no plans and no clue how to travel.  I had a bit of a learning curve but eventually got it :)  and what began as a small eye-opening journey ended up becoming a new way of life for me.  I am now in the 9th year of this nomadic life journey and feel like a completely different person. During my wandering I was fortunate enough to find Dragons, a community I have come to love dearly.  I feel so deeply about what Dragons does that I have stayed here year after year, rearranging my life to be able to keep leading these fantastic voyages of exploration.  I have led summer and semester programs in Guatemala, Brazil, and Central America (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Belize, and Mexico).  Nicaragua is one of my favorite countries in Latin America and I am excited to introduce you all to it.  More than anything, it is highlighted by its warm, outgoing, and open populace. Are you ready to meet people that change how you see the world? Are you ready to find a home away from home?  Let this journey begin! As course director, it is my responsibility to oversee the logistics and planning of this course and to assure the highest quality and safety of our program while adventuring throughout Nicaragua.  I will be joined by two truly outstanding co-instructors: Dhyana Kuhl and Chris Lamar.  This will be our second time all leading this course together and its without exaggeration that I say there is nobody I would rather lead this course with than these two.  These are two of the most inspiring individuals and skilled educators that I know.  And they are FUN!  You are in for a real treat :) The three of us have been working together to craft a stellar learning adventure for you all.  It’s a dynamic and exciting process but one that also takes a lot of time.  A tentative itinerary should be up on this Yak board in the next few weeks.  This board is also the place where you should write any course-related questions that you may have and to introduce yourself to the rest of the group. I encourage you to post a personal introduction here as soon as you can.  Please also check here frequently for new information and updates that we might be posting. Looking forward to meeting you all in two months from today! Saludos a todos los Dragones; parents, travelers, instructors and dreamers, To those who are new this year, I’d like to welcome you to the Dragons community and to the journey ahead! And to those who have joined us for another year, we are excited to have you back! Spring is a celebration of transitions; a transition that marks the beginning of a summer-long journey to give life to our aspirations and imaginations. We hope that the Yak Yak forum encourages you to voice your excitement, anxieties, thoughts and questions–it’s a great place to share a bit about yourself.  In the coming weeks, instructors and students will post their own introductions and begin sharing more information about the journey ahead. From here, discussions will begin to build and your instructors will offer advice for course preparation regarding packing, recommended readings, the itinerary, and topics to consider for your Independent Study Projects (ISPs). Your instructors for this summer are incredible!  Collectively, they bring many years of in-country experience, are seasoned guides and educators, and as you will discover over the course of your journey, are some of the most thoughtful, kind, and inspiring folks in our community.  As your Program Director, I’m here to support and steward the overall process from our offices in Boulder, CO before, during, and after the course. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly to say hello! Dragons prefers to keep our hands in the dirt, allowing us to sculpt courses that are represent our unique goals of profound cross-cultural learning and self-cultivation. When it’s all said and done, and you finally gather in late June at your course’s point of departure, you should know that you are about to embark on an adventure that is intensely personalized and has been many months, and in many cases, years in the making! The Yak board is also the most appropriate place to address your pre-course questions and concerns. We hope that you will discover the magic of the Yak Yak forum (have a look at past courses to get a sense of how the Yak board can be used), and learn to love it! It’s a powerful tool for communication and community building, and once you head into the field, it will undoubtedly become the default homepage of your parents and friends at home – all of those who WISH they could be out there with you! And finally, as you prepare for the upcoming summer, be prepared to be challenged, to be inspired, and to learn and grow in ways that can only come from living these experiences. Most of all, be prepared to have fun and to forge your own footprints into that trackless wilderness that is our selves. Again, welcome to Dragons. I look forward to hearing from you all, and vicariously journeying alongside you this summer. With Gratitude,
Japhy Dhungana

To all ’13 Summer Participants:
It’s great to see all the yak boards coming alive!  This is a very exciting time of year for all of us, and while we know that you are anxious to meet your traveling companions, we have a request for you: please don’t direct your fellow travelers to social-networking sites (e.g., Facebook) before the course. Let us explain: our interest is to provide you with the best experience possible, and over the past 21 years, we have learned that that you will get the most out of your Dragons program if you’re able to make fresh introductions on the day that your course begins.  We welcome you to introduce yourself here, and we hope that you will use this site to voice your goals and ideas for this summer’s course and to begin forming a group culture.  But we’d like to avoid students forming any sort of “cliques” online before even departing on this program.  We certainly know that you can all find each other on Facebook  quite easily, and while we cannot (and don’t want to) forbid such networking, we encourage you to abstain from doing so and invite you to show up to meet your group in June without pre-judgment and with a willingness to expose yourself to everything new, different, wild and other.  We wish you the best as you prepare for this summer’s adventures! [post_content] => Welcome to your Where There Be Dragons Yak Yak bulletin board for the Summer 2013! As you’ll soon discover, this board is a valuable forum for self-introductions, for building community, and for addressing any and all questions that arise during the upcoming months.

Until the start of your course in June, this will be THE place to find important notices related to your course’s development and itinerary design. It’ll also be the place to learn about your fellow students and instructors. So please, post a personal introduction! It may reflect any number of things about you, like your interests, reasons for choosing Dragons, independent study considerations, or any other thought or inspiration. Please also consider posting your packing and prep-related questions here. Don’t be shy – if you have a question, it’s likely that someone else in your group has been wondering the same thing! Your instructors have a lot of experience and many, many tips that they’re excited to share with you. So please, ask away.

Setting up the Yak board, in many ways, marks the start of your course. It’s the first step in establishing the community that will support you throughout the journey that lies ahead. Together, you will learn to walk, dress, eat, talk and think in an entirely new way. You will see landscapes that will cause your jaw to drop, and meet people that will touch, change and inspire your life forever. Although your course’s official start date is still many weeks away, we would like to remind you that your adventure actually began the day you made the choice to join Dragons. Choosing to make your dream a reality took immense amounts of courage, and all of us congratulate you on taking that first, and most important, step.

Welcome to Dragons. We’re excited to share in your adventure!

Sincerely,

Dragons’ Administrative Staff
