[post_content] => Dear friends and families!

Our Dragons program here in Jordan has come to an end!  How quickly one month has passed!  To wrap up the course our group returned to the desert camp in Wadi Rum where we began.  Coming full circle, it was striking to see how much the students had changed - over the month they built strong friendships, learnt Arabic and became immersed in rural and urban communities.  In our final feedback sessions, we were very impressed when we reflected on how the students have grown over the last four weeks, such as by gaining  language abilities and cultural knowledge, leadership skills and self-awareness.

Our goodbyes started this evening when Austin and Nabila left on their flights to Amman, and Emma was reunited with her father in Aqaba.  The rest of the students went to Aqaba Airport to fly back to JFK  on Turkish Airlines accompanied by Ustaza Britt.  The students were in good spirits, although sad to be saying goodbye to Jordan and our group, who have become close over the course.  The photo on this Yak was taken on the roof of the hotel in Aqaba, the last time the group was all together!

I'm sure you can't wait to be reunited with the students.  Thank you for supporting them to join our program!  My colleagues and I have loved having each and every student on the course for their unique contributions to the group, discussions and homestay communities.

We have loved seeing the students grow throughout the course and I'm sure you'll love to hear about what they have learnt and experienced here in Jordan.  Students coming out of an intense group and cultural experience often need time to readjust to being back home.  During our transference session at the end of the course, when students reflect on their experiences, I asked them to write messages about how you can support them when they return home.  The messages are anonymous and they give you a sense of how the group is feeling and perhaps how they can be supported as they transition back into their lives back home:

"I'm nervous about heading back due to the cultural shock.  Describing the trip to anyone outside the group will be a challenge but worth it.  It's good to be heading home, but I'm going to miss the group and Jordanian culture."

"I am really excited about going home and seeing everyone.  However, I do need to catch up on sleep and American food.  Not so many questions at first either!"

"I'm going to need some space at times, just to kinda sit with my thoughts.  But especially good food with variety...no flat bread or 'Middle Eastern' food.  Also, a distraction every now and then would be fantastic."

"I'm really excited to tell you all about my trip but don't bombard me with questions as soon as I get off the plane.  I need actual food, like not junk food, and need to catch up on T.V. shows.  Also don't stress me about college apps."

"I'd like sleep, quiet time and healthy food.  I love and miss you all and I can't wait to come home!  Also air con, it's apparently hotter at home than it is in Jordan."

"SLEEP!  Good food (no bread!)  No prodding/over inquiry."

"Have others listen to me as I have listened here."

"Try not to overwhelm me as soon as I get home (culture shock, etc...) and steak would be splendid.  Give me some time to readjust to home to recharge."

"Help with de-stress about college apps.  Help with college apps.  Understanding that I don't want to talk about the whole trip right when I get home/get in the car.  NO BREAD or flat bread!"

"Do not attack me at the airport or in the first few days, give me time and space!  Be understanding if I'm grumpy or confused.  I will feel lonely without my friends, just understand my weird poop scale comments."

Yes, flat bread is certainly a staple food here in Jordan!

Thanks again for supporting our students in taking this step to challenge themselves and immerse themselves in the rich cultures of the Middle East.  Although our course is over, please keep in touch as we love hearing from our students and their families.

Enjoy your reunions with the students!

Best wishes,

Paul

Trying to get from place to place has been difficult, with obnoxious taxi drivers who always try to rip you off. Even though it has been an immense struggle, we all feel as if our knowledge of Jordan has grown and our transportation skills as well. We’re all very happy to have experienced this competition and we’re looking forward to another challenging but rewarding day!

[post_content] => Sitting on the carpeted steps where I usually heard stories of good-hearted princess' and colorful fish, I instead hear the story of two buildings. I don't remember much of what was said, but I knew it was something sad. The librarian, Mrs. Smiley, spoke with a morose and saddened tone about how many Americans, including some of our families, were grieving and scared. I'd like to think that at the time I was angry at these men and their terrible actions, but I only remember the bomb walls going up around my school.
It's suddenly a year later.  My mom's walking into my room with a saddened look on her face, similar to Mrs. Smiley's.
"Julia... Would it be okay if we gave away your dollhouse? Two girls just went through a very sad experience, and it could really make them happy." Her look was genuine and concerned, so reluctantly, I agreed. What I didn't understand was that the girls had just lost their father in the Bali bombings of 2002.
Years later, an image of my piano teacher, Mr. Marriott, comes to mind. My mother is talking to him, both seeming a bit tense and panicked. This time, however; I was able to understand that something had happened. The Marriott Hotel in Jakarta was bombed by the Al-Qaeda, a group that seems to relish in wide-spread terror.
Since these events people around me have implied that I have reason to be afraid. Whether it be Indonesia, or anywhere else, I've been told I should be cautious. And when I found myself looking at Dragons programs, I could see this "fear" in other people. When I chose and got into the Jordan program a few of my family members questioned my sanity. Mainly they were wondering why I chose a program "So close to Syria." I found that their anxiety only made me want to come on this trip that much more. When I finally found myself in Jordan I started to realize just how little I knew about the culture or the people.  As I wondered what possessed me to choose a trip to a place I knew nothing about, it hit me. Even I had judged the culture before living it. I'd let other peoples fear effect my actions.
During my second homestay, I was with a woman named Um (Arabic for Mother) Fatmah and her family. Though the awkward feelings seemed to linger for what felt like ages, I found myself starting to loosen and eventually caring for the family. It didn't matter that they were all a part of the "Hijab" culture, or that I didn't have the same faith as they did. What mattered was that I wanted to be there, to be there and be with them- and they wanted me there. There was a mutual care for each other. Though I'd come to Jordan with the initial self-appointed "noble purpose" of proving fear wrong, I've found that a much simpler purpose fits me better. Letting those implied fears go and instead experiencing all that's around me. Because even though I never believed in those fears, they still shifted me and in a way made me cautious. I'm not here to prove anything wrong or right anymore, I'm here to experience what the world has to offer;
Many cups of tea with a million cups of sugar inside each glass.
The "grace" that comes with eating greasy but delicious food with your hands.
The shock in someones eyes when you manage to spit out the little Arabic that you know.
A quiet and tearful goodbye to a family that you don't know you'll ever see again.

That's my Jordan.
That's my proof.

To Prove Fear Wrong

Julia Marie Marcou,Jordan Summer 4-week

Description

Sitting on the carpeted steps where I usually heard stories of good-hearted princess’ and colorful fish, I instead hear the story of two buildings. I don’t remember much of what was said, but I knew it was something sad. The librarian, Mrs. Smiley, spoke with a morose and saddened tone about how many Americans, including […]

[post_content] => I watch the sunset melt into the creamy white buildings of Amman as I chop vegetables with my 3 older homestay sisters for our Iftar lasagna (Spanish style, Hadiya says). As I inhale the scents of a Ramadan break fast, my sisters tell me about their vibrant  lives in the city of lights; lives that could not be more different than those of the women in Tweisi. My 4 beautiful home stay sisters (one is younger and decided to watch tv instead)  love Drake, shopping, and the Big Bang Theory. They attend the most competitive university in Jordan, and all 4 made the decision not to wear the hijaab. For some, their best friends are guys (whom I met last night at "fastwalk," a 2 hour powerwalking event through Amman during Ramadan), and their mother, who works in the ministry of Education, comforts their broken hearts (yes, they are allowed to have boyfriends!). But what made me the happiest of all was to watch my sisters sing and dance; at home, in the presence of men, even out the car window, my sisters are unafraid to have fun and enjoy their youth. The women of Tweisi are restricted from dancing and singing around men to preserve their modesty, but unfortunately, even in all female settings, the constant fear of a man appearing prevents women from fully letting loose. I realized last night with my sisters as we drove to get falafel at 1 am with their friends (which was so yummy!) that I had forgotten how good it feels to sing and dance, but moreover, to do so without the fear of an onlooker. The most important thing I have learned thus far in Amman is to enjoy, no matter who is watching.
