    [post_content] => Hi there my lovely Dragons! I know most of you aren't even going to look at this but I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the things we've done together. I have never been more proud of anyone. We've done so much and gone so far and I still cannot believe all the things we have done. From living with a home stay family in Pachaj to planting an entire field of beans in San Juan Cotzal, I cannot say how happy I am that I got to meet you. We have been through so much together and I am truly sad that we aren't together anymore. So I want to say, one more time, that I am so incredibly proud of you all and I miss you more than ever. I hope that one of these days we can see each other again and catch up. That would make me a super happy camper! :)

    [post_content] => Hola Parents,

This Yak is to let you know that the Guate 4 group has safely boarded their plane and are now headed to the Miami airport where they will board their domestic flights back home to you.   It was an amazing last evening last night in Antigua as we attended the premiere of a documentary made by a former Dragons’ student and his friends in which they came to Guatemala and lived off of one dollar a day for 56 days, recreating the conditions of over one billion people in our world.  The movie was made with the idea of raising awareness around the issues of poverty and encouraging social entrepreneurship in Guatemala.  It was an inspiring example of what students can do to stay involved with the place and ideas we’ve engaged on this course.  We wish our students all the best in the future and we know that they are all SUPER excited to see you all today!!

    [post_content] => As our course closes we just wanted to reach out to all of you and say a very heartfelt ‘thank you’.  As instructors we feel like we get to harvest so many benefits of the education and awareness that you’ve all instilled in your children and we are so grateful to you for the trust you put in us and them so that together we could create this magical experience.  The last few days have been spent by our group high in the volcanic mountains, reflecting on the journey we’ve just taken and brainstorming how students can turn their experiences in Guatemala into meaningful and positive action in their own communities.  We have been thrilled to hear students talk about the changes they’ve undergone and the growth they’ve experienced over the past four weeks.  The young person who returns to you tomorrow will have been through trials and joys, faced challenges and had experiences that they might not know how to fully convey yet.  They will be full of stories but may need time to continue processing before they can really share the depth of our shared experience.  Don’t be surprised if they look around the dinner table for the basket of tortillas or respond to you in Spanish, they’ve learned some new habits and will need some time to readjust.  We are so grateful to each and every one of you for sending us these amazing young people and our greatest wish is for them to find outlets at home for their newfound sense of purpose, we know you’ll be there supporting them just as you always have.  We’ll be there too, just an email away if they should ever need us.  It’s hard to believe that it’s over, but in way, it’s just beginning for these young adults, here’s to helping them find their paths and unique voices in our world....

so many gracias,

Luis, Emy and Matt

One of the main focuses of our course is the homestay.  The opportunity to live with a family of a different culture is one of the most important and powerful learning experiences that we can imagine.  It’s a truly special gift that we receive from the communities in which we travel.  They provide us with the opportunity to experience a new sense of values and to question our reality.  Our course has had the privilege of staying with three different families over the course of the past four weeks.  We are so grateful to those families who teach us patience, compassion and authenticity without having to utter a single word. Tomorrow we’ll be leaving our final homestay in San Juan Cotzal for our transference outside of Antigua.  The evening after students were put into homestays here we went around and visited them and their families.  It was such a thrill to see how comfortable students seemed.  We caught them all in different situations, Ana was playing the maracas with her homestay sister, Andre was in the kitchen surrounded by twenty small kids, Sophie was playing soccer with her family, Al was reading on the porch while his homestay mother was weaving.... We were really able to see just how far our students have come in the past few weeks, and we feel so happy for them and the ways that they’ve grown.  We know that you’ll be able to see it too when they return to you shortly.  Until then we’d like to leave you with some images of our last homestay.  Enjoy! [post_content] => The past 5 days we have been staying in San Antonio Palopo at our second homestay.  The first night when I went to bed I was awoken around 10 PM by a weird thumping sound.  I was extremely frustrated because the sound was extremely annoying and preventing me from attaining my necessary 9 hours of sleep.  After an hour-ish I fell back asleep.  Around 7 hours later at 5PM I was awoken by the same sound.  A surge of anger swept over me, and I was determined to stop this persistent thumping noise.  A few hours later I asked my mom over breakfast what the noise was.  She told me how her husband, my father, works on the weaving machine from 5 to 10 every day aside from Sunday.  When she told me this my feelings of annoyance quickly turned to feelings of respect.  Being from a big city like New York I see businessmen running around the city all day, but never have I seen one man laboring over a woven shirt for 16 hours for 6 days of the week.  Having talked with the group that day about gratitutude, this sound made me think about the difficult and often unacknowledged jobs that make our daily lives run smothly.  This sound inbedded a newfound respect in me for the garbage men, door men, cafeteria ladies at my school etc.  The next night when I heard the noise, yes it kept me up for a couple extra hours, but my complete and utter respect for my father forced me to ignore it.

    [post_content] => San Antonio was one of the most fun homestays yet because i had a great family with an unbelievable view and house. The house i stayed was the first house in Guatemala with hot water so the showers were full of joy. The mother, father, and daughter were all very nice and lovely. The view at the top of their house looked like a painting come to life especially during the sunset and sunrise. The lake was beautiful and very refreshing to swim in. I hope to come back to this small but beatiful pueblo one day.

    [post_content] => Over the past few weeks our group has focused a lot of the concept of gratitude. Over the past few days I have developed an clearer idea of what gratitude means to me. I come from a society where we often are only focused on what we desire and when we receive it we often give thanks for what has been given to us but only small amount of the time give thanks for what we already have. Here I have seen countless people give thanks for even the simplest things like the daily food on their table that they work so hard for or a single sunny day. Why are we so focused on the next thing that we want to acquire in our lives when we have so much to be grateful for? With this shifted mindset I feel I have been able to look at the little things with a more grateful view. I was grateful for the amazing family that welcomed me into their home to eat, sleep and learn about their culture. I was grateful to my Spanish teacher that spent hours patiently teaching me tenses and walking me through the market of her hometown. I was grateful to have spent the past 5 days waking up to see the beautiful lake in the morning. I was grateful for the conversations around the kitchen table, to see my homestay sister play with a glowstick for the first time and to see our instructors have the craziest game of twister I have seen in my life. I realize now that none of those things are materials that can be bought but only that memories that I will take with me after only a few short days in such an amazing community.
