    [post_content] => Hi everyone,

Trevor, Long Yun, and I have just arrived in LA after our staff training and orientation in the Sierras, and we are excitedly awaiting our travels with you to China! We'll be more readily available over the next few days if you need to be in touch with last-minute questions.

Here are a few logistical and packing list reminders:

- Without your cell phone, it will be useful for you to have a small battery-powered travel alarm clock as well as a watch.

- Bring a journal with you that you can use both for reflection on our journey, and for jotting down travel and language notes on the go.

- A few students have asked about packing bike helmets. We've decided we will most likely not have an opportunity to bike, so save the space in your pack and leave your helmet at home.

Fot those of you who are not meeting the group on Friday in LA, our instructor team will be reaching out via email to let you know where to meet us in the airport either in Hong Kong or Beijing.

See you soon!

Jeff, Long Yun, Trevor

    [post_content] => Hi Everyone!

I'm Maddie Vance, and I am from Summit, NewJersey. I was born in England and moved to the states when I was 5. I just finished my sophomore year along with my 4th year of Chinese at my school, Kent Place. Chinese has never come easy to me but I love my class. This summer I really hope to improve my conversational skills, which hopefully we will be practicing a lot! At school, the subjects I enjoy are Chemistry, English, and photography.  My favorite sports are dance, tennis, and skiing.

I have never been to China, but ever since starting my study of Chinese I have wanted to go. I absolutely love to travel and I am really looking forward to immersing myself into the Chinese culture. I'm also pretty adventurous when it comes to food, so I can't wait to get away from American food for a while. Going to China will definitely be a big culture shock but I am so excited.

Can't wait to meet everyone! See you all soon.

Maddie Vance

    [post_content] => Hi Everyone!

I'm Katrina Northrop, and I am from New York City. I am really looking forward to our adventure, although I am a little nervous. I have been studying Chinese for four years at my school, Saint Ann's. I fell in love with speaking and writing Chinese from the beginning, and it has since become one of my favorite subjects. Currently I am in Amsterdam, Holland, where I am participating in a training camp for Squash. I play Squash seriously, some of you probably don't know what Squash is, but its a great (and difficult) racket sport. I will come straight to Beijing after this and meet you guys, so I have a very international summer!

I traveled to China last summer with my godmother, and had an amazing experience! We traveled to Yunnan (where we are going this summer), and I knew I was compelled to come back. I chose this program both because it takes place in beautiful and diverse Yunnan, but also because of it's off the beaten track nature.

Traveling is a unique experience because it is both nerve racking and exhilarating.

I hope we can all share that experience and learn lots along the way!

Thanks!

Katrina

    [post_content] => Hello everybody!

My name's Kate! I am 16 years old and live in Brookline Massachusetts. When I was 18 months old, I was adopted in China, and in 2006 I went back to China with my parents. We went to famous sites such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors. We also went to visit my orphanage.  Going back to China and not being able to communicate with the people who raised me for the first years of my life inspired me to study Mandarin more seriously. Now I have been taking Mandarin since 7th grade at school.

Other things you might want to know about me is that I am very active and play many sports such as tennis and volleyball. I also went to circus camp for the past 7 years and this year I am ready to change up my summer plans!

I am really excited to meet everyone and have been counting down the days!

-Kate :)

    [post_content] => Hey all!

It's been great to connect with a lot of you via phone over the past few days - if you haven't heard from one of us yet, you will very shortly. It sounds like we have a really solid group, and we're truly looking forward to meeting all of you soon. Here are 2 frequently asked questions (and a couple packing details/reminders) that we wanted to answer. If you're wondering about anything else, please let us know!

1. We’re leaving so soon! What do I need to make sure I do before I leave?

Here's a checklist:
  • Read the ‘Airport and Arrival Details’ post from Dragons Admin here on the Yak Yak and triple-check to make sure you’ve done or will do everything on it.
  • Pack! We’ve talked (or will talk) about packing details in our calls to you, but if you bring everything that’s on the packing list in your Course Prep Manual, you should be all set. A couple points / things to emphasize:
    • Pack light! When in doubt, either ask us or don’t bring it. The lighter your pack is, the more flexible, adventurous, and comfortable we’ll be.
    • We won’t use our sleeping bags too much, but they’ll be good to have. The smaller they can be packed up, the better. There’s no need for sleeping pads.
    • If you have sturdy, supportive trail running / walking shoes that you’ll feel comfortable in, you don’t need to bring additional hiking boots – they add a lot of weight, and given the hiking we’ll be doing, solid running / walking shoes are enough.
    • You do not need your Course Reader (that big book w/ the red cover), as we’ll provide readings separately.
    • If possible (not necessary, but very helpful), get your daypack to fit inside your backpack when everything is all packed (i.e., so you only have to carry 1 bag total).
    • Bring small-sized toiletries – no big bottles of shampoo, lotion, etc. You’ll want enough to last you the 4 weeks, but no extra. These add a lot of weight.
    • If you feel like your Lonely Planet is heavy/unwieldy, you can cut the binding to remove the Beijing, Yunnan, and Sichuan sections (these are the ones we’ll use). You can use duct tape to re-seal them. Only do this if you want, it’s not a big deal.
    • Finally, these things are in the Course Prep Manual, but they’re important but could be easily-forgotten, so I want to re-emphasize them
      • stuff sacks (for keeping things in your pack organized
      • alcohol-based hand sanitizer (e.g., purell)
      • flashlight/headlamp (really useful for the village)
      • sunscreen (crucial, we’ll be a little higher in altitude)
      • journal/pen (you’ll need it!).
  • Start thinking about and researching your ISP’s. It’ll be super helpful to have decided on a topic and done some background research before you arrive.
  • Read books/articles and watch films about China! We attached a few things we’d like you to read in the previous post – don’t forget about them! Also see Trevor’s introduction letter on the Yak Yak for more suggestions.
  • Be in touch with us if you have any questions/thoughts/concerns, no matter how big or small!
  2. What should I bring as gifts for my homestay families? Bring something small/light, inexpensive, and that has a clear connection to your life in the U.S. or wherever else you have a connection. There are a lot of possibilities, but here are a couple ideas: a baseball-cap or t-shirt (or a few) from your hometown (or your hometown’s sports team), a mug from your school, town, etc., a (small) book of photos from your region, packaged local food (chocolate, jam, etc.). Remember that you’ll have two homestay families (one in the Jixiangcun, the village, and one in Kunming, the city). In the past, a couple students have found that their families in the village have loved receiving a headlamp as a gift. [post_content] => Dear students!

Our course will give you all the platform from which you'll be able to explore some unique aspects of China that "regular" travellers might never have the chance to do. You can add to this experience by choosing a topic for your Independent Study Project (ISP) that really interests you.

Think of your ISP as your own adventure, entirely directed and navigated by YOU. Your ISP is a way for you to explore your curiosity and creativity, connect with locals one-on-one and have an independent experience within the group experience. There are some incredible options for exploration, and this is also your chance to learn through pure experience!

In order to make your ISP as rewarding as possible you will need to:

1. Carefully select something that excites you and will keep you inspired

2. Take initiative with the project’s creation and direction

3. Be dedicated to your project through all its challenges until its conclusion

From the experiences shared by many past Dragons students, we’ve learned that it’s ideal for all students to either know, or at least narrow down, the options for their ISP before we arrive in China, so that we (your instructor team) can be prepared for your arrival by already having some of your contacts and mentors lined up.

We would like you to think hard about and choose an ISP topic. Below are some ideas - topics that students have studied in the past. If one of them interests you, great! If you have another idea, equally great - go where nobody's gone before! When choosing a topic please bear in mind that it must be realistic, a topic that can be pursued in China and pursued using culturally-sensitive research methods.

Here is a list to get you thinking:
Chinese cookingPhotographyDocumenting daily life through film Migrant workers Disability Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture Chinese massage Sports (e.g. ping pong) Teaching English The education system Public health   HIV/AIDSGovernment systemsMusic Calligraphy Ink painting Taijiquan Wushu Tea ceremony Study of ethnic language / customs (e.g. Naxi language and Dongba script) Chinese Mandarin characters Further Chinese language study
After you have chosen your ISP topic, you need to start thinking about how you will investigate and research this topic. We will do our best to help you find the contacts you need, but first we need to know what you want. Do you need a mentor to teach you a skill? Do you want to interview someone? Will you need a translator with you? What other tools will you need to carry out your Independent Study Project? If you can do some background research before arriving in China, that'd be fantastic. We are really excited to hear more about your ideas for your ISPs, and we have already seen some great ideas posted here on the Yak Yak. If you have any questions feel free to contact us by email, too. See you soon! [post_content] => Hey guys--

I'm Eli Wachs and I'll break the ice on these yak-yak posts to get to know a bit about everyone before we go on our trip. I am 15 years old and just completed my freshmen year of high school at the Haverford Prep School in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I play tennis and am on my school's crew team (I coxswain to be specific). I am also on Mock Trial, the Service Board, a school tour guide, and write for the School Newspaper. I have been taking Chinese for a year and love the language and the culture. My teacher uses no textbook, gives no tests and quizzes, and is truly an incredible teacher. Every week I would go to both tell her a story and have a conversation with her in Mandarin. Additionally, I did a 45 minute presentation of the Ming Dynasty as part of a culture unit. At the end of the year, I waned to further both my Linguistic ability and knowledge of China's culture  and thought this trip would be the perfect way to do so.

To answer another prompt question, I really enjoy working in groups. I am a pretty sociable person, and love working with other peers to learn, have fun, or solve problems both big and small.. This is a reason I find the last few days of the trip that we get to plan ourselves so enticing.  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you in just a few weeks and our incredible summer ahead!
