[post_content] => Looking back on the course, and doing my final journal entry last night, I wrote down four main things I felt I had learned this summer.

1. There is a great quote in the book the Alchemist that "Every blessing ignored becomes a curse". I believe now that failures are blessings, as long as you perceive them that way. The first time you fail at something its the toughest time and feels truly awful. But each time after that it gets easier and by the 59th fail at that same thing it doesn't feel bad, but when you succeed on the 60th time you remember all of those failures and it feels that much better.

2. When you are deciding whether to do something, you have two options. To not do it, or do it 100%.

3. From my village home stay in Jixiangcun, I really learned just to smile. We are so fortunate yet we all find ourselves walking around with frowns some days. I never saw a smile leave my parent's faces there. Smiling does not hurt nor does being happy around others.

4. Live life with no regrets and leave everything out on the table. I don't think you can take steps backwards in life. At worst, maybe they are to the side and not forward. But as long as you tried to take a step toward whatever goal, you are sucsessful.

    [post_content] => Dear all,

Thank you, thank you, thank you (or as we've been saying for the past four weeks, 谢谢!) for a great journey together this summer. We are really grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know you and introduce you to China.

Having seen you navigate Beijing on your own, overcome squat toilets, learn to understand your Jixiangcun home-stay families' thick accents, dance a traditional Naxi dance, (almost) win a soccer game in a marsh surrounded by water buffalo, decipher Kunming's bus lines, build relationships (in Chinese!) with your Kunming home-stay families, and organize our final days in Dali and Shaxi, we are truly impressed with your courage and the initiative that you've taken.

You have pushed yourselves to get to know the communities in which we've lived, and we hope that you'll return to visit them again throughout your lives. We also hope that you'll continue studying Chinese! You all have a lot of talent, and we can tell you from experience that knowing the language will allow for many opportunities, friendships, and adventures.

We've had a lot of fun, learned a lot, and enjoyed your company. For that, once again, thank you.

Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.

[post_content] => Sitting at the Hong Kong airport with miles of travel on our backs,

We can not help but think that we are done with those big packs.

Reflecting on the adventure of the past four weeks,

And who can forget Jeff's wonderful sneaks.

Beijing, Kunmig, LiJiang, and Dali,

The only mode of transportation we did not use was a trolley.

A mudslide, a monsoon, and a monstrosity of a flight delay,

Were not even considered a bad day.

The relationships we have built are here to stay,

From Wei to this day.

We have met the "most admired,"

And everyday been inspired.

On the long bus rides we slept on each others shoulders,

And we could not help but think of how much we admire Boulder.

Feeling pretty bittersweet,

But hopefully this will be the Yak of the Week.

Here is to a great trip,

Even though we all smell like sh*t.

we outtie

[post_content] => Today is our last full day in china and there are mixed feelings throughout the group about leaving this wonderful place. I think we are all happy to go home and eat western food. I know I don't realize it now, but I will miss being here. From bike rides in the rain in Dali, to scavenger hunts in Kunming, we can all say we have experienced a large part of China. Even though I miss home, I know I'll miss China and everyone in our group as soon as I'm gone. This adventure is one I will never forget.

Today is our last full day in china and there are mixed feelings throughout the group about leaving this wonderful place. I think we are all happy to go home and eat western food. I know I don’t realize it now, but I will miss being here. From bike rides in the rain in Dali, […]

[post_content] => Today was our first day on our student led part of our journey and the start of the end of our stay in China. Initially I never thought we would get anything done without the guidance of our instructors, and having to plan almost a full week of activities with just a few boundaries, it was overwhelming. Choosing from all the many different wonders of Yunnan was a challenge but now that we are here in Dali, I am having a blast! When we arrived in Dali late last night, we only had a vague idea of what we were going to be doing to today. Although it rained, we end up on a 5 hour bike expedition through the many allyways, backstreets, and mud roads that spand all across local villages and the 'er' lake. Even though it was a long and exhausting day, I wouldn't rather be anywhere else!

[post_content] => Its a cool feeling of responsibility being that waking up yesterday we had no real plan for the day and the instructors were fine with that. For at breakfest we decided to bike around the beautiful lake for 4ish hours, then walk around the old city.  Today we go to Shaxi. We really are in charge of everything now--from budget to food to daily plans. Going to bus station now so have to go, see all of the parents soon!

[post_content] => When reflecting back on all of the days we've spent in Kunming, I cannot believe how quickly the city homestay flew by. It feels like yesterday was our first or second day in this beautiful city.

Now that I'm thinking back on on my experiences in each homestay, I realize and understand better the richness and diversity that China has to offer in terms of aspects like culture and ethnicities. In the village homestay, our lives revolved more around simplicity and nature. We spent our time playing soccer with monks and the local villagers, walking up to see the Tibetan monostery, and hiking down from a village very high up. The smiles we constantly see illustrate how the Naxi people are enjoying their lives each and every day, working during the day and having friends over to eat and watch TV at night. Naxi life offers a an definite stark constrast to life in the city of Kunming, where everything stays busy. However, some of the same cultural values still apply. In the city, I enjoy spending time eating around the table with my family and talking about anything and everything. We still spend a decent amount of time watching TV and I still try my best to understand the Mandarin subtitles. It's been fantastic here, and interesting cultural norms including the necessity of wearing shoes in the house exist and thrive. Yesterday, we also visited the most famous Buddhist temple in Kunming in the soaking rain (with umbrellas, of course). I enjoyed seeing the 500 statues and the temple itself was embellished beautiful with gold dragon carvings. According to my family, it has not rained heavily in Kunming for the last four years,  and this week's thunderstorm was certainly an anomoly. That being said, yesterday's afternoon sky cleared up and we also had a good time in Kunming old town.

I'm gonna miss the homestay experience, but it certainly helped me better understand Chinese culture and language.
