[post_content] => Dear China Comp, China Internship and Thailand Families,

China South Airline Flight 327 has just landed in LAX. The flight was delayed by 2 hours and students are just now going through customs with their instructors. We are going to try our best to rush everyone to their connecting gates, but it is likely that a few students will not make their domestic flights home.

Parents will have to help rebook flights, but please call me at 720-363-9661 if you need assistance getting in touch with your child. I am happy to help coordinate.

Best,

Eva

[post_content] => Yesterday was my birthday. At the beginning of the trip, knowing that my birthday was ahead, I had mixed feelings about having my sixteenth birthday in China. Now, I am glad that I was lucky enough to enjoy it in such a different (but still beautiful) setting, among great friends.

It is strange how this experience has made us so close in so short a time. Although we often get sick of each other (who wouldn't, spending a month in a group of ten people?), we still appreciate each other and appreciate each other's company. We have become a great group, and I hope that we can stay in contact after the program is over.

Beijing is a fantastic city. It has enough people to be three NYCs, but you can hardly tell as you walk through the streets. We spent most of our time yesterday in a street of alley shops called Hutons. It was bundles of fun, and very, very cool.

All in all, this was a great day, and it will undoubtedly be regarded as one of my top sixteen birthdays.

[post_content] => We are in the final day of a wonderful, breathtaking, life changing expirience I will never forget. Let me give you a overview of what exactly was done during this expirience. We started going the suburbs of the city of Chengdu, staying at a "college-student hostal" and beginning to learn how to take care of ourselves. Then, we transitions to a rural village called Arlong, were we commenced the course introduction. Here, we ate traditional food from the local culture and slept in rough conditions. We explored the village, going to the main town and visiting beutiful landscapes. After the village, we once again returned to the city of Chengdu, but this time, we went to the heart of the city. I was stunned. The city flowed in a manner I was not used to, being very vivid, and alive in music and religion. We visited the mian peoples park and got a perfcect overview of the chinese urban culture and how they perform activities that are known from the origins of the many cultures found in the chinese nation. After Chengdu, we began a 10 hour bus ride to the tibetan area. The tibetan area was a pure cultural immersion. Small rural towns, sorrounded by imponent mountains and breath taking landscapes. He explored and passed through the towns and did amazing hikes through the forest covered moutains, with stunning views of the towns, which clearly had buddist influences, a religion key to the tibetan culture. After the tibetan area, we proceeded to visit xining, a city were we did various independent activities as well as a great service project which consisted on helping tibetan girls from nomadic areas learn some english and help interact with them. Finally, we visited the capital of China, Beijing, were we expirienced the stereotypical view of the chinese culture. I was stunned with the never sleeping city and the overall final group bonding was amazing.

We started going the suburbs of the city of Chengdu, staying at a “college-student hostal” and beginning to learn how to take care of […]

[post_content] => Being in Beijing these past few days has been nothing less than a truly incredible experience, and a wonderful way to bring this course to a close. From mastering the subway routes, to markets, hutongs, Tienamen Square, the Forbidden City, 798 Art District, teahouses, Peking duck, karaoke, and so much more, my group found such an amazing way to fit together all the pieces necessary to make this student-led leg of the trip such a great success. Planning wasn't always easy, and the fact that none of us (except for Olive. And Erik, I think?) were acquainted with the city made it even harder to find our way. I couldn't be prouder to be part of this group of 10 incredible people, who have helped and supported each other along the way this past month to make the most of this experience and take advantage of every second. Especially right now, as we leave Beijing and head out for our final evening on the Great Wall, I would like to thank each student in this group for giving me one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. This month has been truly unforgettable.

[post_content] => The last few days in Beijing have been been very bittersweet. We all have been trying to take advantage of our last moments in this amazing city together, but at the same time I feel as if everyone is getting a bit antsy to get back into the US (or Peru). Nothing can replace the memories we have made throughout this trip. In Beijing specifically, I think there was so much going on.

We started off the last leg of this trip venturing to the silk market. The amount of knockoffs were overwhelming but at the same time all of us were having a great time. No one needs to know our new purchases were fake. Right? From there, we all found our way to the night market. When I saw the bats, snakes, starfish, and live scorpions on a stick for sale, personally, I was a bit taken back. People eat this?To admit, I was not brave enough to try these exotic snacks. Instead, I played it safe and tried the candied grapes and crab apples.

The next day we had an early start to experiance the Forbidden City. Although the heat was starting to get to our heads, the beauty of the multiple temples were breathtaking. A sight like this could never be recreated. Later that afternoon, during our free time, Olive, Erik, Jonathan, Liam, and I made our way through the subways the the 2008 Olympic stadium. As we walked out of the subway station the “Birds Nest”towered over us. The beautifully constructed stadium was a great choice to visit. Erik and I went to the "Water Cube" and explored the building where Michael Phelps won his 8 Olympic golds.

The final full day in the city was very cloudy and a bit rainy, but that didn't stop us from exploring the 798 Art District. Thanks to Abigail, in the 798 District we went to a delicious tea ceremony to taste the 4 teas that describe China. This tea ceremony included beautiful music from traditional Chinese instruments: the flute and gu zhen. Afterwards, Olive, Abigail, Olivia, and I explored the street art within the district and then we wandered through the famous Beijing HuTongs. As one does in China, Olive and I couldn't resisit getting crepes with Nutella. At dinner, we celebrated Liam's birthday with a yummy "ice cream" cake. We ended the night with some KTV Karoke. This had to be the best way to finish the month together.

Words cannot descibe how much fun I have had on this trip. Not only have I learned so much about China and different religions within the country, but I have also made friendships that will last forever. We have only been together for a month, but it feels like I have known these people forever. We have tons of inside jokes and secret handshakes. If we dont walk somewhere singing, something must be wrong. We created an accapella group throughout our many van rides.

In my reflection on top of the peak of Lang Mu Si, I asked myself a few questions. Some of these included the following: who I am? Why am I here? How come fate brought us all together? I wanted to find the answers to these questions, but I am not sure if they can be answered. Who am I? I am a 16 year old girl from New Jersey who loves capturing every moment in a photograph; along with others, I sing from point A to point B and dont stop until someone says "Lucy, Shut Up!"I love pocky more than birthday cake oreos and I can't imagine not spending every waking minute with this group when the trip comes to an end. Why am I here? I am here to work on my language skills, I came to learn about the things going on in China, and I am here to learn more about myself. And yes, I did accomplish that. Last one, how come fate brought us together? I dont think I know the answer to this. Things like this happen and no one really knows why, but in the long run it was for the better. Tonight, the last night, is going to be spent on the Great Wall reminicing the past month together. This will be the last night bonding as a group, but I know the memories and friendships that I have made will last a lifetime. China Comp 4 Week you rock. I will miss you all!

[post_content] => At the summer camp I used to go to, there was a lunchtime activity called "aimlessly wandering". Each time it was offered, it was everyone's top pick. It seems a little bit odd that a bunch of 9-14 year olds would choose to wander aimlessly, rather than play wall ball or dress up. However, every time that this beautifully vague activity was offered, I was the first one to show up. Something about the title and,as I learned after the first couple times I did it, the total hit or miss nature was utterly appealing.
I think I may have come to China with Dragons for similar reasons. I was never bothered by the flexible schedule, or unstructured free time. In fact, I revelled in it! The spirit of spontaneity and independence that radiates through the Dragons philosophy reminded me of the ceaselessly exciting lunchtime activity of "aimlessly wandering".
Some of my best memories from the trip are the times when I simply explored. In China's vast cities, just going to specific sites can feel like taking bites of a fruit cake. You never know what it's going to taste like, and it never really feels cohesive. I found that exploring an area with no particular purpose in mind actually lead to a much better knowledge of the culture and vibe of a place. Afternoons of saying "wanna turn here?" and "let's just keep going this way" and "...where are we!?" make up my favorite memories. These were the times when I actually felt like I could possibly get a grasp of this impossibly huge, ceaselessly dynamic, and utterly fascinating country. The most beautiful realizations and states of mind have come from noticing the little things and somehow gluing together all of the stolen moments.

To all of my fellow travelers, I can't believe we're parting tomorrow! You are all such special people, and I've loved aimlessly wandering through China with you :)

Yesterday, we spent the day at the Pentok Institute with a group of amazing girls from Tibetan nomadic areas. We got together as a group and planned a day filled with a bunch of activities including games, English lessons, dancing, and group discussion. Everyone was put in charge of a certain activity and I was put in charge of the dancing. I thought it was a great idea to teach the girls a fun dance that they could easily learn but was a lot of fun at the same time, so I picked the Hoedown Throwdown. I got Lucy to do the dance with me in front of all the girls, and it was so fun. We all went out into the garden near the institute and we taught the girls the dance. Lucy and I stood at the top of the stairs and all the girls stood at the bottom watching as we taught them. We went step by step and they were picking it up really fast! All the girls got really into it and by the end not only did they know the dance really well but they also knew the song along with it. The whole experience of teaching them the dance was so amazing. It was exciting for me to feel like I was truly giving them something that truly impacted them even though it was a silly little dance. It was great to watch them be so interested and excited to learn, and their excitement and curiosity was totally infectious. After the dance, we all went back inside to have a group discussion. The discussion was awesome, we asked them a bunch of different about their lives and what they wanted to do and each girl had an amazing story. They were also all so eager to answer our questions and talk to us. After we asked all our questions, we all decided to introduce ourselves one more time to the group. When it got to me I told them my name and then they asked what my hobby was. When I told them I liked to sing, they immediately started chanting “Sing a Song! Sing a Song!” I have always been really shy when it comes to my singing and when they started chanting I got REALLY nervous. I was strongly considering not singing but then something clicked within me and I had a total YOLO moment and I decided to sing. I sang the song ‘New Soul’, even though I was super nervous and my voice and my voice was a bit shaky, it didn’t matter. Singing for those girls was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. It was the kind of happiness that you can’t even imagine, it was epic.
