The guesthouse seem eerily empty this morning and I am thinking of our students, closer now to the US than to Cambodia. Before they left we asked them what they wanted to take home, what makes them feel alive and what stories they wanted to bring back. We hope that when our group of 16 arrive home, maybe a little different from how they left – you too will want to ask these questions and give them space to tell their stories…. What am I going to carry with me home? Recognition of complexity, awareness of place, satisfaction with simplicity. I will take home patience, I will take home conscience, I will take home awareness. I will leave selfishness because I know I am one piece on the game board, to make the playing field even, I will help. I am going to take home the lessons I have learned here in Cambodia - development issues how to be a good global citizen and how to cultivate kindness. I will take home the experiences and the memories, but most importantly, I will take home a conscious mind. I am going to bring home a new Julia. A renewed mind, filled with more knowledge, more experience and more awareness. I may not be able to bring home the 15 friends who taught me who I am, but I will bring home a feeling of being known, and that’s all I really need. When I get back home I am going to bring silence and laughter. A new found presence with my identity and the world around me. I strive to continue questioning who I am and who I want to be. I want to pursue an exploration of how I want to live in the world. I want to bring home the hospitable, patient, loving, generous and happy nature of the Cambodian people. I find myself and the people surrounding me at home to be living in a constant frenzy, disconnected from reality. I want to bring home a conscious way of life. What makes you feel alive? Doing something that requires such physical or mental exertion that I can’t help but focus, finally. Waterfalls make me come alive, bustling chaotic streets where anything goes, make me come alive. Most importantly what really makes me feel I have a beating heard and a thoughtful mind – that which can be thrown into the wind and with proper preparedness can yield great results – risk. Trying to the get to know someone makes me come alive. Hearing other people’s stories and that interaction when you see someone let go of the barriers they hold towards the world. Being in a different place, somewhere out of my comfort zone. One story I will be sure to tell Oh just total exposure to the simple life that was simultaneously the manliest thing I’ve ever witnessed with my own two eyes: every boxer in the village that were were staying at, 15 young men, eating sour green mango, talking with me in Khmer and comparing muscles with me. I will tell of the time I made a split second decision to go across the world. Not with friends. Not with family. Not with mentors or teachers. But with fifteen strangers. Strangers who turned out to become some of the best friends. Those who could share how they were feeling in their bowels and minds without thinking twice. Who would stay with me for six weeks and not get tired of who any of us were or what we did. Some who could share their deepest darkest secrets and have faith that it wouldn’t be in vain. I made fifteen new best friends this summer and travelled across a remote country with them – what did you do? I will tell a lot of stories, but I will always tell the story of the trek in Ratanakiri. A three day trek in the jungles of north eastern Cambodia, which resulted in a slip and slash by a piece of bamboo, blood ran down my shins into my sock. I had to go to the clinic and get stitches in a small room which was the entire doctor’s office. I have two scars to prove it. Our night in the Wat, exploring the caves of bats and stalactites. The indescribable view of the countryside from the mountain, the failed sunrise adventure and the monks blessing of good karma on our journey. My instructors made sure all my goals were achieved, such as collaborating with a local artist. I biked all around Cambodia feeling so free and happy. [post_title] => What we want to tell you... Is anyone else picking up his or her student at LAX next Friday? I will be there to get Rosalie and we will spend the night at the Hacienda Hotel before driving home to Berkeley the following day. August 9th is also Rosalie's birthday, making it a very long birthday for her (38 hours?)

Hope to meet anyone who is also there to greet their arrival.

Students left the homes of their Khmer families a few days ago.  The village of Prek Pdao is a beautiful, calm place to spend a week - on a small tributary close to the Mekong river, it is fantastic backdrop for bike rides, hanging out with new Cambodian friends and digging a little bit deeper in our learning about this country.  The families of this community always welcome Dragons with open arms, taking us into their homes and showing us extreme kindness, compassion and care.  We were so sad to say goodbye but grateful to have had the opportunity to build a relationship with a new family - these pictures were taken as we departed.  Enjoy…. [post_content] => Twenty-eight kilometers, 4 hours in and 4 more out. A personal record of mine, and I might be speaking for a few other Dragons. The journey began in the very remote village of Chi Pat, truly where there be dragons, upon the first morning in town. The village is known around as an "Eco-tourism" center, pulling in funds from those brave enough and filled with the spirit of adventure to see what Southeastern Cambodia has to offer. Our particular hike, which was voted on the morning of, was, yes, 28 kilometers, 14 in with a destination of a mesmerizing waterfall, and 14 out with a finish line of a cold bucket shower. The first leg of the journey was up an excruciatingly long road past houses and rice fields and water buffalo. About halfway through, we made the sad decision to have the two sick ones, Michael and Katie, turn around in order to rest. Upon reaching the actual trail that led us to where we wanted to go, it began to drizzle. We met a stout, awkward man in glasses and Pumas with the soles hanging off. He told us the journey was long, a hopeful 2 hours from the spot we stood, and to no surprise, muddy and wet. As we left this man, the rain came harder and soon it was an absolute downpour. The effort in keeping our shoes dry was futile, and was denoted by the nonchalant trodding through puddles. Often we had no choice but to walk through the water, as the whole path was flooded out, even motos couldn't avoid it.

The rain stopped and we approached a concrete dam-like structure in the middle of a stream that acted as half of a bridge across, the rest was completed by a few logs tied together underneath planks laid vertically toward the bank. We had taken a break on the structure, had a few Oreos, and unanimously agreed that we were all up for the challenge (one and a half more hours) ahead. Now I recognize that this fellow we met at the beginning of the trail must have been trekking at the pace of a sprint!

Further on, we had to bid our adieus to Miss Sarah as she wasn't feeling very well. She was given a roof under which to sit in the meantime by the genuine hospitality of Khmer, even those in such remote areas.

We finally reached the destination, and it was well worth the 14 kilometers. The waterfall stretched across a tributary that was about twenty meters across and dropped down another twenty, and in the background was the lush forest symmetrical to that which we just emerged, with a tall hill growing above the horizon, also laden with trees. We stopped and consumed our packed lunches and reveled in the sheer splendor of the work of nature. A few of us scaled down the side of the waterfall along the forest's edge and made it to the bottom. There we sat for a moment and contemplated swimming while the mist of the crashing water covered our bodies and the churning currents cooled our aching feet. Swimming wasn't an option as one would most likely be swept away the moment of diving in.

The journey back, at least to the road, seemed twice as fast as the journey previous. But when we approached the road, we were greeted with false sense of the end of the journey. As I said before, the road was excruciatingly long, not to mention flat muddy. Shoes were covered in mud, backs were sore from needlessly heavy packs, feet were swollen and soaked in socks under weighted boots, and tempers were running thin. Although I must say the sense of joy we received upon arriving back to our guesthouse was well deserved and provided a tremendous sigh of relief.

My feet still hurt now, two days later, but I am confident that the pain is well worth the reward. I remember saying to Mara at one point when at the waterfall under the rain, "I couldn't imagine a better place to be."

your last post "Bloodsport" had me at your side experiencing this new sport in a way that was palpable...your sensitivity to the fighters each individually brought them to life for me.....thank you for that.  I am looking forward to hearing even more of your journey and personal experiences when you return home.  How lucky you are to have had this most unique and special time in a land that has so very much to offer to and for all your senses....can't wait to hug you.
