    [post_content] => My homestay experience in Tiquipaya, Cochabamba has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, let alone of this course. My homestay parents, brothers, and sisters have welcomed me with open arms in to their home and have invited me as an equal member of their family. I am treated with respect, equality, and appreciation to a degree which I have never experienced. My homestay parents are always interested in how my day went, what I have done so far in Bolivia, and what I am planning to do in the future both during the course and when I get back to los Estados Unidos. The family is always interested in how I feel and what my thoughts are about anything ranging from food to the movie the family watches together at night (So far the Spanish versions of Toy Story and Life of Pi have been nightly presentations). The family shows great interest in the fact that I'm not a typical “Gringo” and have a vast amount of questions about my Pakistani heritage and my religion of Islam. My older brother and sister, Miguel and Carmen, are like the siblings I never had. For the first time in my life I have people to look up to, role models who treat me as an equal. Never before have I had reason not to be secluded and alone in my room, because for the first time in my life I have someone to talk to in my home, someone to share stories, jokes and laughs with, someone who actually cares about who I am. For the first time, the place I live in has a sense of livelihood, appreciation, enthusiasm, and family. Never before have I felt so much appreciation and equality, even through the English/Spanish language barrier. I have never felt so much at home as I do now. Having the family cat fall asleep on my lap while the entire family gathers around the living room to watch TV, share jokes, eat food.....the word “family” has never been defined better in my life. At first glance it may seem that my homestay family does not have much in terms of possessions, but they have something that I probably never will: Peace at heart knowing that their family appreciates and cares about them, a feeling of home.

    [post_content] => When I arrived in La Paz, the first thing I saw through the airport windows was Wayna Potosi, one of the sacred mountains that looms enormous over the city. Although I had helped write the itinerary and the portion of the trip that would take us to its base, I couldn't fully appreciate the dramatic beauty of the mountain until I was trekking through the Cordillera Real at 4800 meters.

At this altitude, every action becomes more difficult and you can literally feel your body slowing down. Most people from sea level experience difficulty when coming to this altitude to trek in these mountains and we were no exception. It was at times a difficult journey and at other times an incredibly rewarding journey, and always it was filled with huge smiles and plenty of laughter.

I am happy to report that we've all returned safely from our trek and that we've made it safely to Cochabamba. On these courses there's never any time to rest and already students are settling in with their new homestay families in the small suburb of Tiquipaya. Stay tuned for yaks from students in the next few days!

Un abrazo fuerte,
The Instructor Team

    [post_content] => Dear friends and family,

We just received an update from Team Bolivia via satellite phone reporting that their trek is going great!   The group spent their last night before the trek in a lovely eco-lodge and is now hiking along the flanks of Nevado Condoriri, one of the great peaks of the Andes.  From a distance, the mountain chain looks like a condor lifting its wings before takeoff.

The instructors report that despite the challenges of altitude (the team is continuing to acclimate by hydrating, resting, and ascending very gradually), the group is in good spirits and health.

At present, the group is on Day 2 of their 5-day trek, and are scheduled to be back in internet access by this Saturday, July 13.  We'll continue to update as news come in.

Sincerely,

Boulder Administration

    [post_content] => Hello from La Paz!

Today we are completing a scavenger hunt that has us running all over the city. We started the day searching for colonial streets, stopped by the bus terminal, visted the city´s markets and even saw a political demonstration in the streets. We are getting plenty of good excersize walking through the hilly streets, often doubling back on our previous routes. The scavenger hunt is a great way to get comfortable in the large city even though we´ll only be here a few days. What a great way to celebrate an 18th birthday :)

    [post_content] => Hola from La Paz, Bolivia! We´re wrapping up scavenger hunt numero dos with clue number 10, and we´ve spent the entire day exploring the city, drinking delicious smoothies, and eating salteñas (though perhaps more than we should...). We arrived in La Paz yesterday after a three day long homestay in Santiago de Okola, an indigenous Aymara community. Though many of us found it frustrating to connect with our reserved and somewhat shy homestay families, we found solace in a breathtaking hike up the ¨sleeping dragon¨ mountain. In the afternoon, Selene and Caroline helped out their family by wheelbarrowing wood from a Eucaliptus tree, while Grace and Elizabeth faced some babysitting problems. Saad and Jordan learned about their host father´s family history.  We learned about the impact of tourists on Santiago de Okola, as well as the community´s changing agriculture, health care, and education in the face of Western influence. Overall, we ate a lot of potatoes and ¨soupo¨ (as Kayla says), and had a rewarding, though challenging, homestay experience.

We´re all excited to be back in the capital city (or one of them) as a group, spending time together and embarking on new and different adventures.

Hasta luego!

    [post_content] => Hello All,

So its been a while since you last heard from us and there is much to tell, we are however, in a bit of a time crunch as we are in the midst of ¨La Gran Busqueda Numero Dos¨ and spent our lunch break on Bolivian time (meaning we spent 2 hours eating soup). Kayla, however, decided to go outside the box and order what she thought was a grilled-cheese sandwhich...it wasn´t. Much to her dismay, ¨Sandwich de Queso¨in a gringo restaurant quite literally means sandwich of cheese. We are currently in La Paz, having just completed a three day homestay in Santiago de Okola, a small farming village in the Altiplano region of Bolivia. The altitude there (an elevation of 14,ooo ft) proved a challenge and did not go unnoticed when we set out so climb the sleeping dragon, a beautiful mountain that guards over the altiplano. Despite much scrambling, tripping, panting, and the occasional exclamation of ¨guys I´m going to die¨we eventually made it to the crest of the dragon´s head where we held a ceremony thanking the Pachamama for our (somewhat) successful journey. As we began our decent down the dragon´s back, we were relieved to find ourselves gasping no longer and realized that the twelve potatoes we were fed for desayuno would, thankfully, not be our final meal. That´s all for now!

Description

Hello All, So its been a while since you last heard from us and there is much to tell, we are however, in a bit of a time crunch as we are in the midst of ¨La Gran Busqueda Numero Dos¨ and spent our lunch break on Bolivian time (meaning we spent 2 hours eating […]

    [post_content] => Hola Amigos, Amigas y Familia,

Life at 13,000 feet is a beautiful struggle. Every action takes more energy than you can possibly imagine for those of us not used to this altitude. Walking around town, getting ready for bed, even speaking for too long can take your breath away, and that's not to mention what it's like to land in a new country you've never been in before, meeting a whole new group of friends, and having your instructors try to orient you to a brand new culture! It's only been a week but it's already been a grand adventure, and we're only getting started.

We've spent the last seven days deeply engaged with this beautiful country. We spent our first three days getting to know each other, and the country we'll call home for the next month, in the small village of Coroico. We then traveled by bus on the old road from Coroico to La Paz and then onto our first homestay village, Santiago de Okola, perched at 13.000ft on the Bolivian Altiplano, nestled on the shore of Lake Titicaca with a view of glaciers and mountain spires of the Cordillera Real off in the distance. It was in these last there days, those spent with our new homestay families, that we got our first taste of Aymaran culture, one of the most prevalent indigenous groups in Bolivia.

And now we're back in the city of La Paz, with all of our incredible students – Nick, Jordan, Saad, Edwards, Harry, Elizabeth, Kayla, Rebecca, Sinclaire, Caroline, Grace, Natasha, and Selene. We'll be here for just a few days, getting acquainted to the city and learning how to navigate a new environment, before heading off for our 5 day trek in the Cordillera Real!

I hope you're all well at home,
Take care, we miss you all!
Matt

    [post_content] => Greetings from La Paz!

As I type this, the students are out shopping for food and making final preparations for our trek in the majestic Cordillera Real. We will depart for the village of Tuni this afternoon and will spend our first night acclimatizing further at a small guesthouse before setting out on foot into the mountains Tuesday morning.

We will be away from Internet until Saturday afternoon, July 13th. The instructor team will maintain regular communication with the Boulder office during this time.

The student group is in good health and good spirits and ready for this next challenge!

Jallalla!
