I sadly said goodbye to our students a few hours ago in the Cusco airport and I just want to give you a quick update that they are safe and well with Japhy in the airport in Lima now, waiting for their international flight to Miami. Everybody is feeling really good, a bit sad to leave but also at the same time happy to come back home to you. We have lived an amazing experience together the past month, the group has bonded very well, it has been a pleasure to work and livewith a group of such amazing students. I already miss them! The last weekhas passed extremely quick for us, when we were hiking around the Ausangate mountains and getting prepared to return home. Very soon you will have them home tohear all their stories in your livingrooms:)

With much love,

One of our main guides for our trek around Ausangate was Fabian. Fabian is one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. You could see by how his face lit up, how much the mountains trully ment to him. His connection to the mountain spirits was inspiring. I loved spending three excellent days with him and his knowledge.

One main connection I loved sharing with him was the ceremonies we participated in. From the coca leaves, to the offerings we gave to mountains, he was able to get me to look at the mountains from a whole new perspective which was, with lack of a better word, magical. He really made our trek unreal.

This has been quite an experience, to say the least. I am sitting in an internet cafe in peru getting ready to say goodbye to the country and my group and it is a very odd feeling. A big part of me is ready to go home, I miss toilets you can flush tp down and hamburgers and my family, however, another big part of me isnt ready to leave all this behind.

Over the past month I have gotten to know a country I knew nothing of very well, Ive seen the happy and sad parts and gotten to experience peru fully. Lucky for em, I was able to do all this with a great group behind me, constantly laughing and having a great time. The dynamic in this group has been spectacular and although im excited for home I will miss my 8 buddies alot.

[post_content] => We{re finally winding down. After a seven day trek through the striking range of Asuangate, we{ve arrived in the relatively care free town of Pisaq once again. We no longer have to brave the freezing temperatures or the massive elevation gain. We are no longer looking at that glacier and snow covered apu (sacred mountain). I think that I will miss that amazing trek. But more importantly this is the final full day of enjoying Peru with the group that that i have come so close to. We{ve spent the day walking around the town and for the first time, just simply relaxing together for the day. We{ve had our laughs and our hard times. But these Americans has been through it all with one another always there to give support. I love the people of Peru, the mountains of Peru, and the culture of this place. I will miss them all equally. But it seems to be the case that I will miss my comrades on this great journey most of all.

[post_content] => Before coming on my trip I had a lot of negative feelings toward the trip. I thought I was going to be placed in a group where I was not going to interact well. I thought that everyone was going to out perform me and I was not going to be the best individual that I know I can be. I was also very frightened for out outdoor trekking experience considering that I had a bad backpacking trip last year in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. However, now that I look back I was being pessimistic for no reason. My group is amazing! they were all so supportive of each other and we all had each others backs. We were honest when we needed to be and that allowed everyone to feel comfortable in the group. I am really grateful to have shared this experience with everyone in my group!

After seven days of getting to know the sacred mountain of Ausungate and Pachamama-mother Earth in Quechua- I feel like I found another part of me. I felt accomplished after reaching a great pass after hours of huffing and puffing up a steep hill. I felt self reliant as I got myself moving and performed different roles on the trek. I felt open and free as I learned from the people and the mountain and all they could teach me. We saw natives living in humble homes during the middle of the trek, over a 2 days walk in. Such a sight opens up your eyes- peoples´ways of living are different. They walk up to 4 hours to the school. They herd alpacas and make a humble living by weaving various materials and selling to travellers. Sadly, they also asked us for candy and chocolate. However, these people are remarkably satiated and feel very connected to the mother earth. Our guides- Fabian, Julian, and the Condouri brothers- were very nice people who took great care of us and would spend their leisure time chewing coca leaves on the grass. They cracked jokes and knew how to have a good time. They believed that the mountains were alive and to an extent I agree with them. I learned a lot from these people and these mountains and it is sad to leave them.

The next part of my journey is transferring everything I learned back home. Back home- where I use normal toilets and barely go outdoors in the winter and see people littering and I get everywhere by car. Back home- where I have to stress out over exams and colleges and friends and relationships- how do I carry this over?

This trip gave me a unique perspective. Seeing others´ humble ways of living, the living mountain spirits that they worship, and their connection to mother earth, all has a very humbling effect. It makes me want to see the world, to experience these emotions and problems first hand. It makes me realize that there are other people with unique perspectives, opinions and solutions to various problems. It makes me realize that many problems all around the world are more gray than black and white. And lastly, it makes me want to absorb all the knowledge and perspectives I can- to travel and live like the native people do- and develop my own opinions and solutions to various problems. They don´t call me the diffuser for nothing.

Hi everyone,

Team Peru here reporting via our SAT phone -- we have just completed the first three days of our circuit around Mt. Ausangate, the most sacred mountain of the Incas. Despite two 17,000 foot passes, hundreds of llama sightings, the thin air of the Andes, and the legends of Andean myths hanging in the air, all our students are in high spirits.

Among the highlights of the trek so far have been making friends with the Condorri brothers, true cowboys of the Andean range, llama, alpaca, and vicuña sightings, and the sound of Fabian´s Andean flute ringing clear across the mists of the vast mountain expanse. We have all been waking up early with the sun, trekking for most of the day, and enjoying the afternoon for reflections and watching the sun set over the range. Although the nights have been cold, everyone has now mastered the fine art of mountainexpeditions and has stayed toasty warm each evening.

We are happy to report that all students are in good health. Some minor stomach issues have now since been healed, and everyone is acclimating to the high altitude remarkably well. Needless to say, we´re having a great time and learning each day about what Andean people say when they believe that the landscapes around us are truly alive and animated.

We will be in touch again on July 25th, when we return to Cusco. We´ll spend our last few days in Peru reflecting on the meaning of it all, bonding as a group, and engaging in other transference activities. Stay tuned for student yak yaks about our Ausangate trek when we return in just a few days.

Until then, here´s a warm farewell to everyone back home.

Un abrazo fuerte,
Annelies, Sara, yJaphy

Hi Parents and Friends,

This is a quick post to say the Peru group is safe and healthly after three days of their trek, having successfully reached the highest pass on the route. We received a phone message from the instructor team to say they are now in their campsite and will be taking a rest day. All students are healthy and in good spirits. We expect to hear from them by Monday or Tuesday and will provide another update soon.

All the best,

Michael

Dear friends and family,

We're off at first light tomorrow to trek around Mt. Ausangate, the sacred mountain of the Incas.

Crossing high passes, groaning glaciers, and moonscape landscapes, we will be joining our friends from Nacion Q'eros, Fabian and the ever-lively Condorri brothers to share in this journey of a lifetime. This weeklong trek will surely challenge each one of us, from the altitude to the tight teamwork necessary to pull off an expedition like this. However, our students are more than eager to take on this challenge. This portion of our course will be student-led, which means that each member of the team has a unique responsibility and role each day, from preparing group meals to setting the pace to waking up on time.

Although we will be out of touch from phones and internet for the next 7 days, we will be carrying a satellite phone in case of emergencies and will post updates every 3 days to the yak yak board via the SAT phone and our Boulder staff.

There is always a special buzz to the air the night before a big expedition, and it is such a beautiful thing to share this with our nomadic family.

Sacks and sacks of food line the terrace to the hostel; boots await footsteps next to the bedstands; and backpacks are ready for imminent adventure.

Be prepared for stories and yak yaks when we return!

Abrazos fuertes,

Japhy, Annelies, and Sara
