Tomorrow will be our last full day in Nan Yao village. I will miss it here. Tomorrow evening we will have a talent show in the village. Last night we went to a Tibetan Buddhist temple, which was incredible. There were rows of monks praying inside the temple. There were also many monks playing soccer outside. Afterwards we went to a really good restaurant, and then had a birthday cake for Isabel's birthday. I look forward to our last day as we will paint the school, and have a Naxi style celebration.

We've all settled into our homes here in Nanyao village and gotten accustomed to the slow and unchanging pace of life in rural China. Yesterday was Ji Dongba, the Naxi people's most important holiday where they send offerings to their gods, the Dongba. My family and I went to a relatives house for lunch, where the number one thing people told me was duo chi yi dian, have some more food! One of the specialty foods for the Naxi people is baba bread, which is ubiquitous at every meal. After going to an incredibly peaceful Buddhist temple with the rest of the group, we all went to a restaurant to celebrate Isabelle's birthday. After returning home absolutely full of birthday cake, I was almost coerced into a second dinner with my family and their 20 something guests. I politely declined. It is amazing what an important role food plays to the Naxi people. Food is the ultimate symbol of hospitality and prosperity, and you can get as good a sense as you can get of the Naxi mentality just by being present at a meal.

I don't even know where to begin, my journey in La Shi Hai has been different from anything I have ever experienced. Living here for the past few days has been a challenge, but I have enjoyed almost every moment of it. The Naxi people here are quiet farmers who lead peaceful lives. I wake up to the crowing of the rooster and the mooing of the cow. I go to bed, exhausted after a busy day for class and afternoon activities. Tomorrow is our last day here and we have our ISP presentations and a family talent show. I can't wait to share my experience as a teacher to my classmates, and I hopefully I will discover some talent to share with them too. Our last few days here will be sad, but I can't wait to come home on Saturday and tell of all my adventures in China.

This home stay family in La Shi Hai has been a lot different from the one in Kun Ming, but they have been equally amazing. They constantly want the best for you, and although their culture is different from mine they always try to please me. They really accepted me in to their home. La Shi Hai is a very beautiful region of China that few people get to visit, and I'm grateful for the opportunity Dragons has given me to explore China. I will never forget this experience, but I have to say there are a lot of parts in me that want to go home. I think this trip has really broadened my view of the world, and I will try to make the last few days count as much as possible. Seeya China!

These past days have been amazing. Living with the home stay family has been an amazing experience. I was served chicken heart and chicken feet. I was told this morning, as I was served the leftovers from last night as breakfast, that the family had raised the chicken and killed it. Its funny to think that one of the many chickens that brushed past my feet over the past few days was now partially in me! I am looking forward to the next few days while trying to forget the trip is slowly coming to an end. I hope to make the most out of the next few days and enjoy China while I can! I have had an amazing experience! Armaan.

4 Days. 4 Days until until unlimited hamburgers. 4 Days until my own bed. 4 Days until Rocket. As you can tell, I'm looking forward to coming back to America and enjoying home. But counter to what it may sound like, that doesn't mean I want to leave here. La Shi Hai has been awesome. Everyday here is a great day and I'm having a lot of fun with friends, and loving the time I get to spend with my homestay family at night. Yesterday after class we went to a Buddhist temple, where we saw many of the monks wearing bright jerseys and competitively playing soccer and basketball. After that we went to dinner to celebrate Isabelle's birthday, which was a lot of fun. On monday we went to a green energy NGO, which was really cool. Thursday morning we depart at 8 am on an 8 hour train back to Kun Ming, where we'll be for the last two days. We have dinner with our Kun Ming homestay families for the last time there, and hopefully will be able to see Batman. Everyone's really excited. Can't wait to see you guys. Kevin.

There is truly something magical to be said about birthdays--and their innate ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Here at China Camp 4A, that same sentiment holds true.

About a week ago, Isabelle told the instructor team that she would soon be turning 17--a momentous time in anyone's life, but complicated in this instance by the very fact that we would not be in her native New York, nor even our adopted home of Kunmin (a pretty decent runner-up sized city), but celebrating the halfway point of a 9-day stay in the rural Yunnan countryside. When we arrived in the village of Nanyao 5 days ago, it quickly became clear that much of the amenities we had taken for granted up until that point would no longer be viable--up to and including a restaurant where we could eat dinner as a large group and a birthday cake--two of the most basic requirements for any such celebration. Puzzled, the instructor team got to work of scheming some alternative options.

On the morning of Isabelle's birthday, I planned a cake-searching expedition to the nearest big city of Lijiang (about an hour away by hired car) while the rest of the instructor team went about business as usual--administering the daily meeting, overseeing Chinese classes, and doing a lesson on Chinese Buddhism before a trip to a temple in the afternoon. After a fair amount of soul-searching and conversing with the Lijiang locals, I settled on a cake shop called 365 and had them make me the biggest cake they could manage. It wasn't until many hours later, after a run-in with local buses, taxis, and another van heading back from Lijiang, that I met the rest of the group part of the way to the temple, with the almost comically large cake in tow, and with the help of three students who provided a distraction, got the cake packed up in the back of one of the vans and off without anyone being the wiser.

At dinner that night at a restaurant about 20 minutes outside of Nanyao on the main road, we ordered some amazing Naxi delicacies that we had up until that point had only been able to enjoy in the relative privacy of our individual homestay families. Dinner itself was a lovely affair full of conversation and excitement at the old Beijing and Tiger Leaping Gorge mainstay--a communal dinner together. By the meal's end, and much to the surprise of the birthday girl, we presented the massive cake--a decadent chocolate and frosting-tiered masterpiece topped with pineapple and dragonfruit. It was perhaps the best Chinese cake I myself have tasted, and I was overjoyed to have had the opportunity to share it with everyone on China 4A, not least of which, Isabelle.

Sadly, there are no other birthdays slated for the remaining five days of our program, but I think it's safe to say that this was one celebration that will be hard to forget.

Tiger Leaping Gorge was the best hike i've ever done because of the amazing views and the people I got to hike it with. Even through the 28 bends, you had your friends encouraging you to keep going, and you could look out and see the gorge and mountains surrounding you. I think we came together as a group through this experience, and it is something I will never forget!

After we ended our hike we got on a bus to go to the rural area of LaShiHai. I'm living with my homestay family now, and they are such nice and generous people, even though they don't have much to give. I love living in this town and experiencing daily life in rural china. I'm so excited for the rest of our trip!

Hey from Nanyao! Life is so different and interesting here! We have been here for about four days npw and the town and it's people are so beautiful and peaceful. We are winding the trip with really excting experiences. Tomorrow the group is going to venture to Wenhai a local Naxi village which will be very interesting. This past weekend we went on an amazing trek to tiger leaping gorge. It was high elevation hiking which I love and our entire group had a great time experiencing the outdoors for a few days. The sights we once in a life time oppertunities and the guest houses we stayed at along the way had great food! I think we really bonded as a group. Hope everything is going great back home!

This past weekend our group went trekking on the Tiger Leaping Gorge. It was amazing, and the view was incredible. I got a lot of really good pictures, before my camera died. The mountains were so high and the clouds were swarming around them, it was so pretty. The 28 bends were really steep and pretty hard, but after that it was great. I'm in Lashihai now, and I really like my homestay, even though there are a lot of flies in my room. The weather is great and the food is amazing, so I'm having a great time.
