I am sure that all the parents of my peers are very pleased to be constantly informed of what we are doing. What I am going to say now is a little something about all the students and what roles in the group they have taken up.

//NOTE - 6 student photos in this yak. Due to upload limitations, remaining students photos are on following yak

Sung: What a Goofy goober. The life of every party on the trip, of course we have not had any parties though. Sung is the quite leader and one of the brains of the operation. Everyone respects Sung.

Tyler: Tyler is the kind of guy that tells you he is having a four out of ten on the energy scale we do every day with a smile on his face. I know this because it really happened. We all value Tyler for his humor, athleticism, intellect, and his great hair. Tyler is always willing to lend a hand and would do anything for a friend unless it required altering his beautiful face.

Lydia: The oldest in the group and the most charming. Her smile or laugh makes our day every day. Always tackling a new morning with a smile unless illness physically disables her from doing so.

John: John is a very nice and compassionate guy who is a major group helper. He felt awful on the trek and was a real trooper and worked through it

Jordan: One simply cannot dislike Jordan. He is funny and great to just chill with. Never getting too exited or too low. Always game for some cards or a chat. A real trooper on the hikes, he has the attitude of a person that has been to summer camp for many years on our treks. He is also willing to stay up and write this with me despite waking early tomorrow.

Sam: I can not think of a mood that needed lightening that Sam did not lighten. I can always trust this guy to lob a good joke. Not everyone can be positive almost all the time. Sam also is understanding and connectibleeven if you are nothing like him. Another powerful group leader.

Mary-Mike: Mary is always supportive and positive. She is always in high sports unless she in unable to leave the bathroom. She is a commanding leader and a skilled eater of rice. She has had rice every day of the trip. We all appreciate her ability to be a funny comedian and graceful even when she is ill and spends hours in the trains restroom.

Nicole: We all miss Nicole and wish she could still be with us. On the trek she was a leader overcoming her injury. We appreciated the time we had with her and wish her the best in the future.

Janet: She represents Canada and represents it well. This Buzzing, Bubbly, Bodacious person is a great combination of caring and competitive. A complete TANK on the soccer field. She is a great joker and a caring team player. She is a selfless person and if I get a flesh wound I always would go to her first.

Kate: A great person to have on the trip for her attitude, and that attitude is a caring compassionate person who is like a big sister to us all. She helps anyone having a tough day either directly by talking or indirectly by inspiring them with her tripping ability. Don't be too fooled by her caring attitude, she is a great person to have on the soccer field.

Warren: (This has been written by Katherine Alpert Hirsch aka the best person ever) I honestly couldn't begin to describe this kid. Warren is unlike anyone I have ever met. Seriously. He is the perfect combination of gentleman and fun-loving teenager. Sweet, sensitive and caring, this guy knows every random fact on the planet earth, or possibly the universe. Did you know that cocoa butter cures heartburn? Warren did! Although he is the youngest, Warren has quickly taken a leadership position in the group and is well respected by all. Who could be better? Ladies and Gents, give it up for bachelor number one (just kidding, we can't have exclusive relationships)!

Ian: Has good informative opinions that he can back up with his strong personality. Never afraid to show his intellect or make a joke. A fellow Californian and a great friend to everyone on the trip. A moment with Ian is never a dull one.

Jessica: Jessica is a great listener. Anyone can have a great chat with her if they just need to get something out. It is hard not to like her and everyone calls her a friend. She is a passionate person and will see something she starts through to the end. She will go to ten different stores just to get a badminton racket.

[post_content] => The room was dead quiet, every ear captivated by the man in front of us and the events he witnessed over a few months in 1989. I am still in awe of all that he has seen, people beside him getting shot and bikes coming to pick up the bodies of those he had spoken to not moments before. Paul Mooney, an american freelance journalist here in Beijing that we were lucky enough to be blessed with a few hours of his time.

It was nice to see that he has still been able to hold such an open mind despite being such a naturally inquisitive person. As the meeting progressed we heard his other accounts of the communist party covering up stories in order to save face and how many brave Chinese journalists have wound up in jail or awful living conditions due to reporting on taboo subjects. The AIDS cover up is clearly the one he is most energetic about and his knowledge of different cases across the provinces. Whether it be sharing his stories of sick people being driven around the block until authorities had finished their check on the hospital or simply a girl being banished from her village for something she had no control over.

Our hearts were all clenched when we heard about the child kidnappings from rural communities in order to get them to work in black kilns for no pay and little food. Hearing about how every month large groups of parents would go to kilns and search for all the missing children was truly touching.

Due to this meeting China seems much more realistic to me, a country more similar to others with issues it has to work through as well. China is no longer the fictional place I used to try to dig a hole to, but a place with positives and negatives. I was glad for the chance to have a new point of view on current events. I know that I will be visiting his websitewww.pjmooney.comin the future.

Today I walked into a Chinese department store by myself hoping to learn a lot about Chinese cosmetics and to possibly (definitely) pick up a few samples as well. I was really excited to start research (shopping) for my Independent Study Program topic; chinese makeup. Chinese makeup is actually really fascinating. Chinese makeup is very different from the American makeup I already know so much about. For example, girls in America spend thousands of dollars to sit and bake on tanning beds, while in China, every major brand sells whitening creams.

As I was browsing through the displays and pretending to know what each bottle read even though my mandarin is limited to "where is the bathroom", and "Mary Michael farted", it didn't take long for a crowd of blatantly staring Chinese women to form around me. I picked up a random product and asked if anyone spoke English. Helen, the girl who responded, soon became my "ChengDu de pengyou" (Friend from ChengDu).

Helen quickly escorted me over to another counter, and for about thirty minutes the women at the make up store who I had intended to interview began to bombard me with questions. (I can imagine that my life in China is comparable to a B-list actress' in America. I always feel slightly famous from all the staring and shameless picture taking.) Helen eventually sold me on a BB Shuang (Tinted Moisturizer) and a sunblock, but only after making me feel really self conscious about my sunburn. As I was checking out she told me, "I want to play with you", and after hiding a laugh I told her we could go to dinner.

Helen took me to a noodle restaurant, and while slurping away we exchanged email addresses. She got a phone call from her boyfriend during dinner in which she told him, "I'm eating with an American eighteen year old with red hair! Come over here!"

We picked up her boyfriend after dinner from the bus stop and the three of us walked around Old Town ChengDu, and somewhere the lantern-lit cobblestone streets "the boyf" bought me a chocolate ice cream. She wanted showed me through a store selling only panda parafanalia, and she contemplated buying herself an engraved rice necklace. It was a touristy spot, but it was also beautiful and I could tell she wanted to show off ChengDu to me. We had a really fun time together: Helen, her boyfriend, and I.

I was sad to have to leave, especially when I told Helen she was welcome to come visit me in America and she responded with, "tai gui le" (too expensive). I can confidently say that I will never see Helen again. Thats the rose and the thorn on traveling through China; everything I see is unique and a "one time only offer". Its sad that I cant re-visit the sights and experiences I love the most in China, but that knowledge allows for deeper appreciation, and forces me to live in the moment.

I'll be looking forward to an email from my ChengDu de pengyou.

When I first arrived in La Shi Hai, the only thing I noticed was the dirty, poverty-stricken land. I was nervous and scared. Honestly, I was kinda dreading the home stay. Although the first day was extremely awkward, after spending some time with my family I gradually began to feel more comfortable. However, I still felt some sort of feeling of superiority over these Naxi people. Something about the lives of the villagers seemed to be missing. It is not until now that I realize that there is nothing missing in their lives. Their lives are not sad, depressing, and lonely. They are just simple.

The simplicity of their lives improves a sense of community, especially within a family. The children help cook dinner, clean dished, and serve tea. I talked to my sister (who speaks relatively good english) about college and she said that most Chinese kids do not want to go. When I asked why, she responded, "We miss our family". The simplicity of a rural chinese life leads to strong bonds within a family and a better understand of the world that surrounds them.

The trip has been plagued with a plethora of sicknesses ranging from the very common case of the cold to la du Zi. (diarrhea) The sicknesses have heavily influenced many aspects of our trip and have even caused changes to our schedule. Looking at this in a positive manner, these challenging occurrences have only brought our group closer together.

We are no longer strangers to the idea of spending an evening running to the bathroom or even having an "accident". The comfortability I have developed with my new friends is unexplainable and i consider myself very fortunate to be surrounded by a group that accepts each other even in our poor conditions (health-wise). My friends have been blessed with a compassionate demeanor that I will forever appreciate as I think back on the multiple times I thought I was "dying". As we push through our last few days with the positive mindset to have a great time, I think upon all the great times we had and how our sicknesses created incredible bonds of friendship that will never be forgotten.
