Here are some Jerusalem resources for ya!

John, you might really find the environmental resources, listed at the bottom, to be of interest. -Darren Grosch-

Online magazine with happenings all around Palestine (there's a Jerusalem specific button, but has a lot of things that are going on. Comes out monthly):
http://www.thisweekinpalestine.com/

Online resource for English speakers in Palestine (sorta like Craigslist):
http://www.englishpal.ps/

Jerusalem Specific English Speaking Web Group:
http://www.janglo.net/

Yahoo Group: Ramallah Ramallah (you can post questions about entry from Jordan or anything else really...search the message board and you can find pretty much everything)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ramallahramallah/messages

Center for Jerusalem Studies (links to Universities and stuff):
http://www.jerusalem-studies.alquds.edu/

Goethe Institute Jerusalem (they have lectures and movies here that deal with Israel and Palestinian conflict- all free in Ramallah):
http://www.goethe.de/ins/il/jer/enindex.htm

And Jordan Environmental Stuff:
Friends of the Middle Earth (okay, it's not called that, but it's too close to Lord of the Rings to not get confused- organization was recognized by Time magazine...could do a service project in the Peace Park? It links Palestine and Israel, too): http://foeme.org/www/?module=home
These are specific communities they work with: http://www.foeme.org/flash/foeme_jordanriver.html

Greetings from the Eastern Sierras! Yoli, Darren and I have been spending the past week in the mountains with other Dragons' instructors and administration as we prepare the final details of what is shaping up to be an amazing summer full of learning and laughter.

I recently received from a friend this very playful evaluation of the current situation in our region and wanted to pass it on to all of you!

Hey guys,

My name is John Bowman and I am a recent graduate of Charlotte Latin School who will be attending Duke University in the fall. Honestly, the most interesting thing about me is that I will be going to Jordan this summer, so I'm not really sure what to tell you guys. I have lived in Charlotte all my life, but I have travelled previously to Italy, France, and Scotland. I'm a tennis fan and player, but I am much better at watching tennis than I am at playing it. I'm interested in studying foreign and environmental policy at Duke next year, and I'm sure traveling to Jordan with y'all will be valuable learning experience in both of these fields. I'm really looking forward to it.

All the best until then,

John

Hey guys,

My name is Madeline Hung (I go by Maddy), and I’m from San Francisco, California! I just finished my Junior year at Lick-Wilmerding High School in the city, which is a technical arts prep school. This means that, in addition to all our academic classes, we are also required to take industrial shop classes like wood shop, fabrications, glass shop, electronics and jewelry. Pretty fun. Aside from this, some of my other hobbies include running, playing tennis and violin, cooking, and above all, traveling! I am incredibly excited for our trip, and to meet all of you. I have gone on two shorter trips with Where There Be Dragons before, to India and Cambodia, but I have never been to the Middle East. Like Gabriela, I think that this is a very exciting time to be in the region, and I look forward to learning more about Jordanian history, politics, and culture. I hope that this trip will be challenging and push me outside of my comfort zone, but at the same time I hope that we just have a lot of fun together. See you all in two weeks!

-Maddy

Meet your new tribe at JFK airport. Fly to Jordan!!!!

June 29
Aqaba: Arrive in al-irdun, meet local Aqabawi Ahmad Jaradat and spend the night by the sea at Aqaba’s Ministry of Education Youth Camp

June 30
Aqaba: After a day of team building, briefings and orientation to place and people, we’ll have our first experience – cultural and environmental - of the Red Sea.

July 1 - July 3
Aqaba: Travel to Aqaba City, where we will further orient ourselves to the country by learning Jordanian Arabic survival skills, exploring Islamic tradition, understanding Jordanian history and customs, and spending our first days exploring Aqaba’s streets and marketplaces.

July 4 - 8
Aqaba - Lawrence Road – Saudi border – Wadi Rum:
Preparation and departure for our four day trek up Lawrence of Arabia’s road to Wadi Rum. Meet Suleiman Sabbah Zalabiya, our erstwhile Bedouin guide, who has prepared for us an adventure full of surprises. Our trek will take us up Lawrence’s Road, toward (but not across!) the Saudi border and into our final destination, Wadi Rum – the heart of Bedouin territory.

July 8 - 10
Rural Homestays, Wadi Rum
Spend a day and two nights living and learning with nomadic Bedouin families who still call the deserts of Wadi Rum home. Observe and learn customs and traditions that have remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years.

July 10
Wadi Rum Visitor’s Center –-> Practice Makes Perfect
We will spend the morning at Wadi Rum Visitor’s Center learning about the management of this protected nature reserve. In the afternoon, we will be met by Awwad Radi Zawydeh, who will help us to put the skills learned in our rural homestay into practice as we travel from the Zalabiya territory in Rum to Zawydeh territory in Disi.

July 10 or 11
Practice Makes Perfect → Disi
Upon arrival to Disi, we will split our tribe into single gender groups as we prepare ourselves for our homestay in this traditional and welcoming village of settled Bedouin. Sleep one last time under the stars of Wadi Rum before joining families.

July 11 – 16
Disi Village Homestay
Students are paired with homestay families in the village of Disi where they will experience the traditions and hospitality of the Bedouin, which date back over a thousand years to and before the time of the Prophet Mohammad. Compare experiences and traditions of living with nomadic and settled Bedouin and begin to consider the impacts of tourism on traditional societies.

July 16 – 18
Rajef
Meet Mosa Rawajfeh and travel by bus with him and Abu Asri, the Wadi Rum-Petra bus driver, to Mosa’s home village of Rajef, in the Shura Mountains, where we will be hosted by local families who have had little exposure to outsiders. In Rajef, we will be given the opportunity to put skills learned in Aqaba, Wadi Rum and Disi into practice as we meet and interact with local families.

July 18 - 20
Petra
Meeting up with Abu Asri again, we travel to Petra, where we will explore the history and current life of this ancient city and modern tourist attraction. We’ll also consider in greater detail the impacts of mass tourism and marvel at the rose red city of the Nabateans.

July 20
Travel to Dana
Travel like locals from Petra to Dana Nature Reserve…

July 20 – 22
Dana Village and Nature Reserve
Explore Dana Village, run by the Sons of Dana and Qaddisiyeh Local Community Cooperative and Dana Nature Reserve, a protected area run by Jordan’s Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. Observe your surroundings and consider the effects of development and change on small, rural populations.

July 22
Dana – Wadi Feynan Solo Trek
Spend a day hiking from Dana to Wadi Feynan Reserve tucked down in the bottom of the Jordan Valley. Reflect on your experiences to date as we end our time in Jordan’s south. Camp as a group in Wadi Feynan.

July 23
Wadi Feynan – Dead Sea – Madaba/Amman
Rising with the sun, depart by bus for a return to the urban, modernizing world. Poosible stops at Lot’s Cave, Jesus’ Baptism Site and the Dead Sea, before heading north to Amman or Madaba, our base from which we will begin our exploration of the north.

July 24 – July 29
Northern Jordan
In partnership with students from Amman Academy, a private high school catering to Amman’s elite, we’ll spend our days exploring service options in and around Jordan’s capital city of Amman.

Our afternoons and evenings will allow for further physical exploration of the north and an intensive look at the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam, an understanding of which is so critical to entangling current events in the region.

July 29 - August 4

Our expedition phase, which will be largely student dirven will offer students the opportunity to, as a group, explore one of the two options below.

Option 1: Jerusalem: Meeting Abraham's Children:
In this student-driven expedition, we will explore the historical and modern cultural exchanges of Jews, Christian and Muslims living in the 5000 year old city of Jerusalem. We will more deeply explore the large grey-area of religion and conflict as it relates to the city, as we visit various sites relevant to the three Abrahamic Faiths. A visit to Jerusalem affords our group the opportunity to explore topics introduced throughout the trip including comparative religions, regional politics, art and architecture and modernization. Please note that travel to Jerusalem is contingent upon our assessment of a secure physical environment for foreign travellers.

Option 2: Northern Jordan: Tracing Abraham’s Footsteps
In this student-driven expedition, we trek explore a wealth of themes accessible to travellers visiting northern Jordan. In addition to trekking the northern Jordan portion of Abraham's Path, we will spend time exploring and reflecting upon Jordan’s regional role - both contemporaneously and throughout history. A visit to Parliament and meetings with representatives of local media and non-governmental organizations coupled with visits to Jerash and Amman’s archeological sites will allow us to reflect on law, governance and conflict resolution in both the past and present within the context of faith and spirituality so present in the region since time immemorial.

August 5-7
Unwind with a few days amid the ancient ruins and golden fields of Pella in northern Jordan. Present Independent Study Projects, reflect together about the last 5 weeks journey, and prepare ourselves for a return home.

Afternoon of August 7
Return to Amman for flight to NYC.

Greetings from Chicago!

My name is Yoli and I am the latest addition to the 6-week summer program exploringTradition and Modernity in the ancient lands of Jordan. I am so excited to join thisamazing trip in a region of the world that is so rich in cultural and religious heritage andalso plays a critical role in the diplomacy and peacemaking in the region.

This will be my third program with Where There Be Dragons and my first in the region. I have lead for the Himalaya and India semesters over the last (academic) year andthat adds to my eleven years of teaching high school and college age students in thedeveloping world. My love of experiential education and cross-cultural engagementsgets fulfilled leading trips like these: rugged, engaged and spontaneous!

My academic background is in Religious Studies, Cultural Studies and Global Studies. Ihave a Master’s degree in Comparative Religious Ethics and my focus is in IndigenousPeoples spiritual traditions and how they are challenged in the face of modernity andglobalization. I teach courses like World Religion and Culture, Religion and Conflict,Mystic Spiritual Traditions of the World, Cultural Anthropology, Digital Literacy, YogaTheory and Practice and Introduction to Globalization.

I have spent almost twelve years of my life in India first as a student and then as a
teacher and that is where I can be found most of the year. I am a yoga teacher and YogaTherapist and India has been a shelter for my inner exploration and a little bit of lifewandering in the Himalayan mountains meditating and learning local languages. Myadventures in Jordan have been with a wish to bring the stress-management tools andhealthy body science into the Arab world as well as contribute to the changing lifestylesof the Indigenous Peoples of southern Jordan, the Bedouin.

Since the Bedouin have become settled and for the most part no longer move throughouttheir desert lands, naturally tourism has become the major incoming input for thecommunity. Due to the traditional gendered role of men and women, for the most partwomen have not been participating in the developing of the tourism industry. However, the need has arisen for women to participate more and I have lent a hand to that effort.

Hopefully this all doesn’t sound too dry! I have lots of other hobbies and interests like:music, circus, playing games of all sorts, singing, being silly and more!! I look forwardto getting to know all of you and adventuring!

Dear Students,

As we embark on our journey together into Jordan, the I-Team asks that you refrain from bringing your I-Pods. I know, this seems like a crazy request. However, disconnecting yourself from creature comforts such as I-Pods will allow for a truely authentic journey.

We recognize the importance of music and its value which is why Darren has put together a file share site that will allow for each of you to share your music. Please follow the link that he has provided in his Yak, and let the downloading frenzy begin.

Again, thank you for accepting the no I-Pod challenge.

Sincerely,

Alena B.
