MarHaba!

So today marks our first day actually inside the Jordanian city of Aqaba. I didn't really have any preconcieved notions or expectations surrounding Aqaba and the culture here, but I'll try and share my first impressions as clearly and concisely as possible. One of the first things I noticed here was the conservatism. In Aqaba, I have seen few, if any, post-pubescent women not clad in burkas and hijabs. The dress code and demeanors of the locals both exemplify this conservatism and originally seemed to me to be indicative of little exposure to western or outside customs. During our scavenger hunt, however, I did notice how outside cultures had permeated the city. My group and I located various American fast food restaurants and foreign pop culture symbols all over Aqaba, such as McDonalds and Spongebob, respectively. We also encountered many locals who could speak English (as well as other languages) quite well, displaying how what initially appeared to be an insular city actually is quite diverse and worldly. All in all, my first impression of Aqaba has definitely sparked an interest in analzying if and how outside cultures permeate Middle Eastern cities as well as the various effects they have and feelings or emotions they evoke from the locals.

Although it is hot, the port here is absolutely beautiful. Waking up and seeing the Red Sea each day is definitely both a treat I won't take for granted and a memory I will cherish. Additionally, it is much easier to take in and appreciate the rich culture in this city when I am surrounded by such a caring, fun, and supportive group of people. I'm excited to see where else this trip will take us!

Best,

Kennedy

[post_content] => When we finally arrived in Aqaba, it was dark so I had little idea of the beautiful scenery that was awaiting me when I woke up on our first morning at our camp. As we rode in our taxis along the Red Sea we could see the lights of Isreal and Egypt. We also saw the sign for the Saudi boder, only ten km away. It is amazing just to think about where we are in the world geogaphically and how close we are to so many of the places that we are constantly hearing about back in the United States. When I steppedoutside ofour door thenext morningIwas able to see for the first time the Red Sea and the mountians of Isreal before me. It was beautiful! Really no words or pictures can do it justice. Two days latter I was still in awe everytime I looked out at the view before us. At the end of our first full day, we got the oppertunity to go down to the beach and swim in the Red Sea. A few of us jumped off a platform into the water as the sun was setting behind the mountains in front of us; a really special moment. Aside from experiencing the beauty of where we are, we have also began to experience the culture. I am realizing how difficult it is to be a woman in the Middle East, which is expected, but it is hard to really grasp until you are actually here and experiencing it for yourself. We have met some amazingly welcoming people people anda fewnot so welcoming people, but this is all part of being in a new place, wherever in the world you may be. Our group is getting along great and I cannot wait for our next six weeks together in Jordan!

Well we have landed. And boy is it hot, like really hot. But besides that everything seems to be going great. The food is wonderful and the group is already strong. It feels great to get out and interact with others in aregionthat is totally new to me. I hope that it just keeps getting better even though now that seems almost impossible with how great it is now!

We are here in beautiful Aqaba. The scavenger hunt that we currently find ourselves in the middle of has certainly given us a positive impression of the Jordanian people. The backdrop of this humble port city's sheer magnificence is the majestic, yet populated, Red Sea. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to experience the historically conflict ridden body of water and as a result we can confirm that it is both cold and suprisingly salty. We througouly enjoyed ourselves, despite the post-swimming football (soccer) match resulting in minor casualties. Currently we find ourselves inside a run-down internet cafe, experiencing the literal crossroads of tradition and modernity. For our families in London and Atlanta respectively, we are having an amazing time and hope to speak to you soon. Unfortunately now is the time to sign off, because of our scavenger hunt.

MarHaba from Aqaba! We are here sitting in an internet cafe after two days of camping by the Red Sea in Aqaba City, Jordan. We have been exploring the city together and expanding our Arabic vocabulary daily. Our first impressionn os Aqaba where at night when we got off the plane and the weather was absolutely perfect. Little to our dismay, we awoke the next morning to find ourselves in 100 degree weather. Apart from this the city is very pretty and has great views of the surrounding mountains and sea. Currently we are on a scavernger hunt around the city. We have to do things like buy post cards, ask local taxi drivers the price to Wadi Rum and and take a picture as a group with a photo of His Majesty the King. It has been an interesting experience but one that can be easily used to learn from. We have been very busy but all agree that we are having a great time here in Jordan! We are learning through day to day encounters and will deffinately bring back many stories to tell.

Everyone arrived on time and in good spirits to NYC to Chicago. All students and instructors are currently on their way to Aqaba where they will spend the first several days of their program at a retreat space in the countryside. We look forward to hearing from them in the next 24 hours once they land and settle in.

Safe travels to all!

Hello!

My name is Lucas Greenberg and I am a rising sophomore at the Darlington School, which is a boarding school in Rome, Georgia. I am really interested in international relations with regards to the Middle East, and I am also a huge politics nerd. I really enjoy writing, reading, and debating as well as sports. I have lived in Atlanta, Georgia all my life and this will be my first trip overseas! I am very interested in learning and discussing the new direction that Arab World has headed into in the midst of all the revolutions that have taken place. As we all have mentioned, this is a truly exciting time in the Middle East, and I know this is going to be an awesome trip. I'm genuinely excited to meet all of y'all and to share this adventure with you in such an exciting time!

Hey everyone!

My name is Caitlin Kelley and I go to an all-girl school called Nightingale in New York City. I have a friend named Francesca who went to Jordan with Dragons last year, had a fantastic time, and talked about it so much that I eventually decided I'd have to see it for myself. I'm really looking forward to the trip, especially trekking, learning Arabic, and studying religion. I have taken two past courses with a focus on religion and will be taking a World Religions course next year, so it's something in which I'm pretty strongly invested. I'm also interested to learn more about women's complicated role in the Middle East- going to a girl school, caring about women's issues has pretty much been beaten into me. Finally, like Maddy, I'm excited for a bit of culture shock. I think it's amazing how well Dragons is able to assure that we are getting the experience of living in Jordan, not just passing though.I can't wait to meet you all next Tuesday, see everyone then!
