Clean, refreshed and in bright new clothing purchased during our final two days inKunming, the I-team waved goodbye to our students this morning. We sent them on their way in high spirits but also with sadness that we were going our seperate ways after 4 awesome weeks together.

Adam was the first to depart, setting off forBeijingearlier this morning. Around noon Dillon, Andrew, Isabel, Jamie, Lucy, Molly, Austin H, Austin L, Greg, Will and Joy began their journey toHong Kong. From Hong Kong, Lucy will be the second to leave the group, flying toFrance. All other students will fly to LA arriving at 9.55pm and then continue on to various destinations across theUnited States.

17 strangers from 3 different continents came together for 4 weeks this summer and returned home as 17 friends connected by a shared experience that will bind us together forever. The I-team would like to thank all parents for entrusting us with your children and making a wonderful summer possible.

We would also like to thank all of our students for the highs and the lows, the laughs we've had along the way, the conversations, the sleepless train rides, the feedback, the shifting group dynamics, the basketball games (even though Rachael plays it like it's netball!), the dance parties, the hikes and even the last night at Green Lake with the lame lanterns.

China4B, we leave you with these wise words from Confucius

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

And, we hope that this program was your first step along a paththat will take you on a journey ofworld exploration, curiosity and growingunderstanding of your place in our connected world.

朋友们下次见!

This morning, my classmates and I were asked to reflect on Dragons core values. I was drawn to the value of "Global Citizenship," as it related to everything I have been thinking the past few days here in Lashihai.

I am both incredibly lucky and incredibly unlucky to live where I do. I have countless freedoms and numerous options for my future. At the same time, my nation is home to many people (including myself) who have been sheltered from the injustices not only in the rest of the world but at home, too. Lately, I have been overcome with thoughts about what the little kids here in the village will be doing while I am studying whatever I want at university. I am lucky (and very glad) to have the opportunities I do. However, I feel great resentment towards this situation. As a "global citizen," what do I do? I need and want to take advantage of every opportunity I have to pursue education and success; but I also think that I have no right to it if so many children, even the ones I am calling sister and brother here in China, have no access to it. Even people living in the neighborhoods around me in New York City may not have the same opportunities because they are the children of immigrants and of unfavored races and social classes. I live in a racially segregated and class divided city, state, and country in a world in which each country hates each other one. I am grateful for the opportunities I have, but I don't think it's fair that my neighbors may not get them too. I may not be wealthy, but I am a middle class white American which, by birth, gives me a head start and advantage above so many others. I feel incredibly guilty, but I am grateful.

Hello Friends Family and anyone who happens to find this yak,

Well here we are in La Shi Hai in the Na Xi village. Upon leaving Kun Ming we were all extremely nervous and worried, not only about our 7 hour train ride, but also about what our family and daily life would be like in our new home. We had nothing to worry about. Aside from our slight struggle to understand the Na Xi Hua (keep in mind that fifty percent of china have their own variations on the language) I can safley say that we are all quite enjoying our time here. Yesterday we rented bikes and had the oppertunity to explore the beautiful country side more throughly. After the day had come to a close and we all returned to our homes I sat on my porch and finished up the last few pages of my first summer reading book. As I read I took frequent breaks to look around and see what my family was doing and to take in the wonderful view of the foothills of the Himilayas. I thought back to an idea we had gone over on our first day in kun ming, quality of life. These people who so willingly took us in and treated us as family truley enjoy the quality of life. Perhaps they dont have a shower of tap water, maybe they dont have easy access to choclate bars and ice cream but looking around made me realize that they had so much more. I continued reading and found this quote, "Knowing that everything comes to an end is a gift of experience, a consolation gift for knowing that we ourselves come to an end" (Tobias Wolff, This Boys Life). We as dragon students have an amazing oppertunity to experience a part of the world where most Americans (of French for Lucy) dont get to participate in. In the last seven days of our trip I am sure that my love for chinese, chinese culture and china will grow more each day and although it may be sad to leave I know that I will take everything I learned and bring it home with me.

~Joy

First of all, I would like to point out that my ISP was not about judging or comenting on the value of TCM; rather, I was tryingf to understand the link between it's philosophy and it's practice, as well as the difference with western medecine.

In that aspect, answers came really quickly, mainly because the two are almost different in every way. This alowed me to anbalyse the mater folowing the two philosophies ( wich are too deep t go into)

I have interviewed a doctor, visited a hospital and taken picvtures. My ISP is already nearly complete.

[post_content] => Our ISP has been incredible so far. The first teacher we got was awful. He tried to teach us tai-chi, but left 10 minutes into the lesson, and a man who spoke broken English talk to us about the mind for 40 minutes so that was a bummer. Then we tried a different teacher who was awesome. He taught us what we wanted to learn, how to break bones and defend yourself. In other lessons we got to fight his friend, where we got to fight but he could only defend himself. One day Austin (me) had an upset stomach so he was able to do his observation which was very helpful, while will (me) got to train privately with our instructor and his friend, it is very sad that we have to leave him in Kunming while we trqavel to our rural stay because every time we both had so much fun and learned so much of the Chinese Martial arts, but we still have much to learn, and will learn in La Shi Hai.

Hello Dragons community,

We are writing a yak to let you all know the progress of our ping pong ISP. So far we have met with a couple different coahces, one coaches the Yunan provence ping pong team. However, this coach was often unavailable and we often ended up practicing with a young man who worked in the ping pong studio. The coaching has been very helpful and our grips and form have been completely transformed, which has drastically improved our game.

As well as practicing in the field, there is also research and observation that needs to be done. We went to a nereby mall and asked many people a couple questions about ping pong. There were mixed responses, from some highly skilled players to some that barely ever played ping pong. Few people didnt even understand what we were talking about, but that was mainly solved using mordern technology.

We have all done research in our homestays and have had discussions with our instructors about some ping pong events in history. We are all having fun learning about and playing ping pong, and are definately going to be better players when we get back to the states.

-See You Soon

It has been three days since we have met our home stay families. We have learned a lot already, and we will surely learn more. But how and what did we learn?

When you are a beginner, like me, you quickly learn to use "Chinglish": "Silverware zai nar?";" Wo bu shi hungry". But this turns out to be very effective: the awkwardness of the situation makes you quickly remember the word. It is also the case when you need something very badly, be it food or the bathroom. The two first words I learned were "mi fan"(rice) and "ce suo" (toilet).

So apparentlly, better than any manual or written lesson, embarassing situations or communication problems fuel your memory. This sounds very pessimistic, but then again, if you know the word, you don't need to learn it (stating the obvious). And those turn into very nice memories, and good stories to tell.

Just a thought.

Hello,

We just arrived at Kunming, and last night we all went to our homestay families. So far we have heard only good stories and everyone is having a good time. We are having a great time trying the Kunming traditional food and drinks. Today we are celebrating the birthdays of two students Andrew, and Gregory (bai ande and ke xiao ren) by going mini golfing (mi ni gar fan). We are looking forward to getting to know our families and continuing to learn Chinese.

see you all soon,

Where There Be Dragons students
