Hey Everyone!

My name is Sophie and I'm going to be a junior next year at Milton Academy, which is in Massachusetts. I play field hockey, squash, and lacrosse for school teams. I love traveling, sports, learning, and exploring new cultures so of course I'm very excited for our trip to start! For my independent study project I was thinking of studying African dance or doing something involving kids, such as working at a local school or orphanage.

I can't wait to meet all of you!

I thought I already posted my intro but it looks like it may have not gone through. Anyway, my name is Alex and I will be a senior next year at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was born in Adelaide, Australia which means I need a visa for Senegal which they said would be ready tomorrow. I'm super excited for Senegal and cannot wait to meet everyone!

I think I'll probably do my ISP on Senegalese painting or cooking...maybe...I'm still unsure.

Dear Students,

I'm starting to get nostalgic. Nostalgic for a place, and a journey that hasnt yet happened, but for which the momentum is building in my feet and in my heart. In preparing for this course, I start getting a little misty eyed. Yes, most likely, you will soon identify me as the sappiest out of the instructor team....

I recently read a book about a young woman's experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cote D'Ivoire. I think that she does a great job of describing West Africa, and as there are many regional similarities it is relatable to our program. She describes her struggles and sucesses and also the magic of the place in a very beautiful way. The book is called Nine Hills to Nambonkaha: Two Years in the Heart of an African Village By Sarah Erdman. I recommend that you all pick it up from your local library and read it before our journey. Later, we will have you read famous Senegalese authors and more academic materials, but for now this book will show you what one American girl found in West Africa.

Also, we want to pick your brains about ISP topics! EVERY STUDENT should post a yak outlining his or her idea for an ISP topic by Tuesday June 15th. In the past, students have investigated topics of religion, globalization, art, public health, drumming, dance and gender issues. Think about what interests you at home and about Africa. You can change your mind as we move through Senegal, but if we have an idea as an instructor team now what your interests are, we can begin to cull some resources for you.

If you havent introduced yourself on the Yak Board, please do so!!!

We cant wait!

Liz, Mbouille and Christy

Hello students and families! Here is our first draft, rough itinerary!

Please remember that this plan will inevitably change, depending on many factors. We will allow for student input, the affect of the rainy season, road conditions and the general health and energy of the group to help direct our movements through Senegal. We can't wait to meet you!! Please introduce yourselves on the Yak board! See you soon!!

– Africa instructor team (Christy, Liz and Mbouille)

29-July 6 Orientation to Dragons Senegal 2010! We'll be based out of the Thies program house, and we'll have a full schedule, which will include:
*Visiting local schools
*Doing language exchanges with new friends from a local English club
*Getting to know Mbouille's family
*Spending time in villages with Heifer international
*Meeting with local NGOs
*Short urban homestays
*Drumming lessons
*A visit to an incredible textile factory
*A scavenger hunt in the local market
*French, Wolof and Pular language study!

July 4 Party to celebrate American Independence Day in Thies with all our new friends!

July 6 Travel from Thies to Kedougou: Our first real rugged travel experience.

July 7,8 Kedougou: Recover from the journey and rest up for the trek, lessons in the singsong Pulaar greetings

July 9- 13 Depart Kedougou on foot, heading to the spectacular Fula villages of Bandafassi and Dindefello. On route we'll visit animist villages tucked away on remote hillsides, see what is alleged to be the largest baobab tree in Africa, and pitch our tents in small campgrounds along the way. We'll contrast the PulaFouta culture of the Fouta Djallon with the Wolof culture in Thies

July 14-21 Travel from Kedougou to Kolda, where we'll be in rural village homestays for one week, living the life of our lovely hosts, tending to the animals, working in the rice fields, pounding millet, and playing with children! We will discuss development, participate in village soccer games, and continue language, djembe and African dance lessons.

July 22-27 Choose your own adventure! This time is open to student input, with possible options including home-stays in a Serer village on an island, or perhaps some time in the Gambia.

July 27-August 1 Dene, a Sufi village built on the sand. Babacar will lead lessons focused on Islam and spirituality. Sleeping under the stars in this beautiful beach village, we'll awake to chant and sing with our Sufi friends.

August 1
Attend a Sunday service at a renowned Catholic monastery outside of Thies with spectacular murals, using this as a means of contrasting Islam and Christianity both in West Africa and the United States.

August 2 A day trip to Touba, a central West African Muslim pilgrimage site and home to Mouride brotherhood Cheikh Amadou Bamba's tomb. We will tour the city's mosques and see West African Islam in action.

August 3-6th A beach locale near Dakar, where we will do our closing sessions, students will present their Independent Study Projects, and we'll prepare for home re-entry. We'll also have time to relax on the beach!

August 6-8
Dakar, where we will have time to buy some last minute souvenirs for family and friends in the city's gigantic markets, see the contentious $27 million dollar statue that Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade has recently had erected, and take a visit to Ile de Goree to explore the island's history as a slave trading center. We'll do our closing paperwork and have a final group dinner.

Aug 8th Farewell to Mbouille and the group's flight home...and the beginning of the next chapter! [post_title] => Senegal, Itinerary! Hi Everyone!

My name is Michael Rothbaum and I'm 17 years old, finishing up my junior year at the Solomon Schechter School of Westchester. I live in the suburbs right outside of Manhattan but still spend a good deal of time in the city. Outside of the classroom I'm involved in EMS, theatre, writing, and variety of other clubs, electives, and leadership positions. I suppose I can best describe myself as creative, passionate, spirited, dedicated, motivated, intelligent, kind, adventurous, and unique.

I cannot wait for our escapades in Senegal to begin, to meet all of you, and to immerse myself in this foreign culture! It's going to be a great experience and a lot of fun!

See you soon!

Hi all,

Everyday I return to our yakyak board, looking out for student introductions, and I have yet to find a single one! As such, I will pose a challenge, with a reward. The first student to post a letter of introduction will be awarded one (1) omelette sandwich and one (1) cafe Touba on the house. These are some of Senegal's finest delicacies, and I'm sure you won't want to miss out, so post away! Letters of introduction are encouraged, but this is also a great forum for posting questions you might have as you start thinking about the trip. We're looking forward to your Yaks!

Last Saturday night, after a power cut,I was sitting on the roof of my house with my wife and kids ( 2 boys and 1 girl)because it was hot inside I looked up to contemplate the moon, and stars covered from time to time by clouds and I started talking to my wife about the approach of the rainy season. As people coming from the South of the country (where it rains more),this is very meaningful for us. We talked about the beautiful environment during the rainy season, going to the fields to help our parents farming etc. Then I started thinking of the great times I usually spend with Dragons people in rural areas where the lack of electricity makes the view of the sky and the moonlight more beautiful and inspiring… I can’t wait to spend those great times with you guys, this Summer.

It’s a bit hard for me to write a letter of introduction, because I have so much to say about my experience with this amazing program… But at the same time it’s also a pleasure for me to introduce myself to you whom, I guess, I’m going to share some wonderful moments this Summer. For sure, I’m really excited to share with you guys, along with the two other instructors (Christy and Liz), my culture and my experience, but also i hope to be as present as possible so as to help you find the key that will open the door of world you're looking for through this program. I’ve been working with Dragons as an instructor, since summer 2005 when the program just started in Senegal. But I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from this progam; I have met so many wonderful people that I still wonder what my life would be if I didn’t have the chance to work with and be a member of the Dragons family.

So, my name is Mbouillé, pronounced MBUYAY in English and I was born in Ziguinchor and grew up in Kolda ( both in the South), then I moved to Thies ( 70km from Dakar and where we might be staying for the first week) to end up my high school studies; and then I went to the University Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar. After graduating there in British and American literature and civilization, I came back to Thies to work as a teacher of English and later a language and culture professor at the Peace Corps training centre, before I got the chance to start working with Dragons in 2005.

Now I’m ready to start a new and great adventure with you guys. For sure, it's going to be tough and hard at times, but I'm definitely convinced that you'll all find it amazing and you will certainly keep it as one of your best memories. And we are lucky enough to have such a complementary and experienced Instructor team (Liz,Christy and myself). Personally, it makes me feel like everything is set to make it the best adventure when I work with these two great persons. Yes, as Liz mentionned it, groups are different, so shall the experiences be, but I'm deeply convinced that yours will be unforgettable. Hence, we are all extremely excited to share with you and help you learn about the country of « TERANGA», Senegal.

I can’t wait to meet you all. If you have any question, feel free to post a yak.
