Hi all,

In response to Caro's question about iodine, I thought I would post a bit about water in Senegal. The water in country is not good to drink on its own, from taps or from pumps, so we will always purify it in some way. When we are in bigger towns, we will have access to ceramic water filters, which the group will share, and students will need to fill up their water bottles before returning to their homestays in the evenings. Bottled water is also readily available, but at a cost (both in CFA, the local currency, and in the countless plastic bottles!).

When we are trekking and in the rural areas, we will not have access to one of the big ceramic filters and will instead use iodine tablets or Steripens. While the instructors will have a supply of these things, students in the past have been glad to have their own supply to use when they want. We'll talk about water a lot when we get to Senegal!

In short, my final recommendations for you is to bring at least two 32 oz Nalgenes (or something similar), plus something that you can use to purify your own water if need be (either a Steripen or iodine tablets). Don't worry in any case, we will not let you go thirsty!

Your instructor team is in California now, getting ready to head up into the mountains for instructor training. As Liz said in her last Yak, we will have limited internet access, but we'll be on periodically to reply to your packing questions, etc. We are SO excited to meet you at JFK on the 29th!

Christy

Hi! I was wondering if just bringing iodine is fine, or if we need another water purification system. Also, can we pick up a backpack padlock when we get there or should we really get it before?

Also, for my ISP I'm thinking of either focusing on gender issues or cooking, or maybe something else.

YAY! See you soon

This is horribly overdue, I'm so sorry! It was lovely to read all of your introductions (not to mention the daunting warnings about malaria). I'm Olivia. I'm going to be a junior at the Spence School in NYC, and I have never been anywhere near Africa before. I spend most of my time playing soccer and reading. In the summer I always find that I have wasted the entire morning reading the newspaper instead of doing something productive (like posting on the yakyak board or buying a backpack, or changing out of my pajamas). What is everyone reading right now/packing? I haven't really started packing... I look forward to meeting all of you! What are you doing to prepare?

-Olivia

Hey guys,

I'm Liza and I live in Great Neck, NY. I go to school at the Brearley School in New York City, and I just finished my junior year. I like to play soccer and snowboard, and I also love painting and drawing. I just finished my third year of Chinese, but I am not so great at speaking the language so I hope to become more fluent during my time in China. I also hope to learn a lot about Chinese culture and how people in China see the world.

See you all in a couple of weeks!

    [post_content] => Dear Team Senegal 2010!!!

Here we go! Before you know it we will be landing on the continent of Africa!

Your instructor team has been pouring over your student files, and we are getting super excited about meeting you all! One of us will be calling each one of you this week to answer questions and to ask a few of our own. We also wanted to let you know that we will be in the mountains for the next few weeks for our instructor training, and while we will still be checking the Yak Yak board, we wont be as diligent as we are when we have constant electricity and internet. We would like to encourage all of you to make sure you get your packing questions answered when we call you, or in the next few days on the yak board. Also, we really need to see your introductions and ISPs ideas on the board for those of you who have not yet posted (and thank you to those of you who have). We need to make sure that you are becoming accustomed to using the board, and that your eyes will be on it as we post other important information regarding our journey!

We also would like to assign some reading for you as you prepare. Please read, in your Senegal reader, the essay called Ndank Ndank and please start thinking about the questions at the end. And also, PLEASE PACK YOUR READERS!!

Thank you! Happy Packing,

Hey everyone, my name is Michael Tillman from Philadelphia, Pa and I am so excited to be part of a great adventure such as this one. I just finished my junior year at Boys' Latin of Philadelphia (all boy school) and cannot wait to arrive at JFK to meet all of you. My hobbies consist of baseball, football, traveling, and oh yeah meeting new people.

Last summer I went to Oregon for an Outward Bound Course where I spent 22 days in the wilderness. I had so much fun and still talk about my adventures until this very day. There is nothing like getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing things beyond your wildest imagination.

As for my future Dragon's Adventure ahead, I am so excited. I can't wait to learn French, do home-stay's and just see another continent. I must admit though, I am kind of nervous for being oversea's that long, but living in a house with 4 sister's and no brothers would make this seem like a vacation.

For my ISP I am not really sure about. I was thinking along the boarders of dance or French but I am not sure.

Overall I am very excited and is counting down the days for my departure from Philly to New York :D

Hey guys!

My name is Bridget Thompson and I'm 16 years old. I'm from a little coastal town called Tiburon in Marin County. (if you've ever seen the movie Funny People...well they go there) It's like seven minutes away from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I'll be a senior next year at Redwood High School. Every year I go on a summer program with some other students, but I am looking forward tomy first trip to Africa this summer with the highly recommended Dragons program. As far as my ISP project goes, I am having a pretty hard time deciding what exactly to focus on, so I've been doing a lot of reading on Senegal to narrow my options. I think I'm now looking at Animism, rural politics, local traditions, or the effect of Islam & Globalization on ancient traditions. So..yeah, not a lot of progress. Anyways, I'm excited to see you all very soon!

Bridget’s Introduction!

Bridget Thompson,Senegal: The Warm Embrace of West Africa, Summer 2010

Description

Hey guys! My name is Bridget Thompson and I’m 16 years old. I’m from a little coastal town called Tiburon in Marin County. (if you’ve ever seen the movie Funny People…well they go there) It’s like seven minutes away from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. I’ll be a senior next year at Redwood […]

Hey guys!

Here's the standard info: My name is Lynn and I'm from Manhattan also :) I go to Trinity School and I'm going to be a junior next year. This will be my first time on the African continent and I hope to really immerse myself into the culture. I can speak un peu de francais, but I hope it's enough to allow me to connect with my homestay family. I'm slightly nervous about the "traveling light" concept--forty pounds is not light! And only 3 tshirts!--but I'm up for the challenge.

For my ISP I want to do Senegalese holidays. They are an interesting part of every culture and they reveal a lot about its people. I can't wait guys!
