hi all,

so i also wanted to just add a few of my first/third impressions of morocco. this is the third time i've traveled to morocco; each time i get of the plane i'm reminded of my love of this country and its people and each time i'm excited for the unknown adventure that lies in front of me. when we landed in marrakech this time, i felt like i was coming home - the sights, the smells, the sounds all so familar and welcomed. as we made our way through orientation at Rachid's house I was reminded of my love for the people of this country - the ever generous Rachid, the amazing women of his house that kept us fed with delicious moroccan dishes, the children of the village that would greet me with 'bonjour' and then when they realized i spoke Tamazight, would kiss my cheek, the taxi driver who couldn't believe that i lived in morocco before and who invited me over for tea. all of them amazing people who may not realize they have touched my life and will forever remind me of the beauty of human connections. its good to be back, but even better because this time i'm sharing it with some old friends and some new friends, friends that will remind me to not just see new landscapes but to have new eyes on this journey.

and on a more logistical side note - we made our way to Sefrou, at the base of the Middle Atlas mountains (after a rather long travel day). Here we will spend the next 6 days experiencing Moroccan hospitality at a new level as we dive into ourfirst homestay. Be on the look out for yaks over the next few days from the students and the other instructors!!

peace, christi

Although Morocco is only about 8 hours away from New York by plane, it feels like worlds away from home. While there are certain similarities, just about everything is different. From the culture to the scenary, Morocco is an incredible place. But what surprised me the most was the hospitality of Moroccans towards our group. When we arrived at Rachid's compound, I felt very welcomed. He kindly greeted us with a smile and opened up hishome to us. One of my favorite gestures of genorosity so far has been the offering of mint tea. Right off the bat, I could sense how willing people are here to show us the many traditions and customs that are part of the country's rich culture. As interested as I was in learning the process of making mint tea, I immediately noticedthe emphasis placed onthe relationship between a host and his or her guests in Morocco. I can't wait to observe this important aspect of Morocco more as we continue to explore the country.

I have never seen something so beautiful. At first I was really tired from the long plane rides which is like a blur to me now! We arrived Marracech by the city transit Morocco. When on the transit Ianticipated to see the city,Icould'nt believe thqt Iwas actually inMorocco. Therewere some little boys dancingaround outside on the sidewalktomake us laughand they did but I stillwantedmore than that. Wearrivedat this beautiful hostile that poured of rich colors within the flowers to the expressions of happiness and curiousity on our faces. As soonas we putall of our bags down, we went toa little cafewhere I hadmyvery first Moroccan meal. Thiswas not onlymy first meal butmy firstimpression.I got upandaskedone of theownershow to say napkin inarabic. It tookabout2 minutes to figure it out butafter thathe just ended up saying" Kleenex?", whichwas shocking because I wasn't expecting him to know englishbut I guess it's better to try than to not try right? But the most breathtaking experience was the medina at night. I hqve never seen something so beautiful before in my life and it was exactly how I imagined it. The smells, the colors, the lights, the mystery, and how smoke of food being cooked and cigarettes, perfumes, and how they all complimented the sun setting in sky.

It is impossible to thank them too much for their hospitality and patience. Their welcome has made the beautiful barrens of this country seem full of life, and dulls the edge of the harsh landscape that they survive in. For now, in an attempt to tell them of my gratitude, I am learning shokran b'zef-- thank you very much.

hey! we are all here chillin in Amizmiz it is pretty awesome. we started in marrakech and practiced bargaining in the medina it was really fun but having abdou to speak arabic really helped. I am very glad that i take french in school because it is very useful. last night after lots of meetings our group got to head into the town of amghrass to attend a wedding. we only stayed for 2 hours but the beginning half we all waited but the boys and girls were seperate. I dont know what the boys did but the girls were constantly adjusting the placemen of our plastic chairs as the moroccan women would inch their seqas closer and closer to the front. some little girls began to dance for fun and it was pretty adorable. after a considerable amount of time sonme men began to play drums and sing which was very cool. I hope that made sense. morocco is awesome!

Friends and Family,

We are finally in Morocco. I have to admit, it iss a beautiful place. We arrived at the airport. We soon after went on another plane to get to go to Marrekech. We were welcomed by our third instructor Abdou. When we went out, we saw a beatiful city. All the biuldings were red and the streets were filled with motorcycles and cars. Later we went to the Medina. It was amazing to see all the vendors and shops. It was probably my favorite spot in the city. We also had a scavenger hunt there. It was awesome. The next city on our trip was to Rashids house in Amghrass. It was an amazing view. We were on top of a hill with mountains looking down on us. It was the start of our orientation. So far the trip has been amazing and I cant wait for the rest of the trip to continue. See you all later!

Orientation is teaching us vital lessons about how to communicate and work together. Last night we went to a Moroccan wedding with loud music and florescent bright lights. A great way to begin! Concluding the nights festivities we slept under the stars. Beauty is all around us and we are all eager to continue!

Description

So far our journey has already been amazing. New friendships are beginning to appear and the forming stage of our trip is in full throttle. Orientation is teaching us vital lessons about how to communicate and work together. Last night we went to a Moroccan wedding with loud music and florescent bright lights. A great […]

Since arriving in Morocco, the highlights of the trip so far have been meals at Rachid's house and sleeping on the roof. So far we've had a traditional tajin with chicken served in a ceramic pot, cous cous with vegetables, and pasta with either kidneys or liver. Eating with my hands has been an interesting experience, and the food has been great. Sleeping on the roof is also a bit of an adventure. Despite the constantly barking dogs, early sunrise, and 330 call to prayer, sleeping under the stars was well worth it.

So far the trip has been great, but now its time to return to Rachid's house for lunch.

Hi! Yes, I'm still alive.

It's like a whole symphony over here! Earlier in the day, Marrakesh slowly comes to life: the cockcoodoodling of roosters, the call to prayer blaring just like the city-wide warning tests in San Francisco but for a completely different, maybe an even more important, reason; and the annoyingly merry chirping of the birds on the tree outside our window, puntuated with the slow rumblings ofa modern city coming to life. Then on our way to Amghrass, ancient desert music blended with modern music. Then late at night in Amghrass, dogs loudly dueling it out on the streets, mules sounding just like sea lions, and roosters completely confused about the time kept us awake for the longest time. It's interesting how the language sounds so harsh, but the peopleare so nice.
