Hola chicos,

Wehave paid close attention to your comments regarding how to choose your independent study projects. It’sgreat that some of you are already taking responsibility for your own learning in Guatemala. Asi se hace!

We are going to present and speak more thoroughly about ISP's during our first day at Orientation. Basically we (instructors) serve as mentors, helping to provide learning opportunities such as setting you up witha local expert, narrowing your topic of interest, facilitate materials, provide structure and time for skill adquisition, etc. Altough we can provide guidance and support, ISP´s are entirely student-direceted, requiring students to take responsability for their own learning.

ISP's are your authentic opportunity to share with all of us, after our extended travels and observations, what captured your attention from the beginning (now), what learning and unlearning you took from the experience and most importantly, which aspect of your critical thinking, character development and skill acquisition were relevant to YOU in the process. ISP's culminate in a celebratory sharing of presentations to all group members to honor everyone´s hard work on the final days of our trip.

We know you are excited, yet anxious about the opportunity to intern in a new enviroment. It can be overwhelming when you are 2067 miles away from this reality (that is if you are a New Yorker). The most important thing you guys need to know now is that we would love to hear what is intriguing for you and we will supportyour curiosity. How that sounds?

Warmly,

Luiregaron

Saludos Dragones!

We are getting closer to our departure time and we bet you are starting to think about what you need to pack. Wow, 19 days!!

Pack LIGHT!The packing list provided in the course preparation manual (sent to you) is a great guideline, it is the result of many years of work and feedback from studentsso try to follow it.

To answer Delia´s question and provide more packing tips:

  • It is ok to bring ONE pair of jeans. You can use them to attend spanish school, in urban settings and when we are not trekking. Don´t bring wide-leg pants that might drag on the ground, as these are a disaster on Guatemalan street.
  • As you may have read, Guatemala, especially the rural Mayan highlands is a conservative place regarding dress. To those small villages and off-the-beaten-path places, we´ve got to show our respect as foreign visitors by dressing appropriately. Unfortunately for female students this means NOT to bring:

1.Tinny or spagheti strappedtank tops

2. No short skirts ( at the knee or just above the knee cap is fine)

3. No tight or revealing clothing

4. For all, chicos y chicas, it is best to wear "nice" (not holey and stained) clothes when hanging out with your homestay family, attending Spanish classes and participating in activities with locals.

  • We need all of you to bring a sleeping bag and pad. I travel with a 35 F sleeping bag and feel comfortable sleeping at night. 3/4 size pads are ideal because they are not so bulky, but whatever you have will be fine. Please
  • Everyone should bring an alarm clock or watch with alarm.
  • If traveling with ATM cards, visa works best (Please have the pin number written down and the bank approval beforehand).
  • Pair of flip flops for showers and sunny days
  • Super Useful extras: some duck tape wrapped around your water bottle, hand sanitizer pocket size, pictures of your family, a good book to loose yourself in and your own stock of grapefruit extract (natural fighter for GI infections) and/or Pepto-Bismol.

Remember that Guatemalans are not running around naked, so if there is something you feel you need, you will be able to find it down there so no need to stress.

We are SO excited to meet you all! Our time together is coming up soon! Please feel free to post/email any further questions, doubts, concerns you may have.

Estamos pa´servirles!

Luispe, Regina and Aaron

Que onda chicos!

We are going to ask you not to bring your Ipods or MP3 players. This summer is your chance to let the language and rhythms of Guatemala infuse your brain and your soul, we feel earphones would hinder this. There is a lot of NEW music in Guatemala, in words, in the street, in nature, bus rides, and, of course, the great sounds of Latin music. We will be bringing CD's to introduce you to great music of Guatemala, you don´t want to miss out.

(also, Ipods are like a big neon sign saying: "rob me, I have great stuff)

Good luck packing and if you have more questions please keep 'em coming.

Hasta pronto,

Luiregaron

I just wanted to know if jeans are alright to bring as one of the pairs of long pants/for wearing on the airplane.

I may as well add my isp thing too..

I love and would be equally interested in perception of family, weaving, enviro preservation and gender roles. Could you explain a little what exactly what we do with these and how you guys guide us?

Dear Dragones,

We hope you are as excited as we are for this summer! We’d like to share ourtentativeitinerary with the caution that things will almost certainly change along the way. What we present to you here is only the framework for a unique adventure; what unfolds in Guatemala is the real experience.

OnJune 28th, we’ll step out of the La Aurora airport and into a new reality for the next 4 weeks. We’ll first be greeted by Guatemala City, in all of its vivid colors and smells, where we’ll catch a rejuvenating night’s sleep after our travels. The next morning we’ll drive through the countryside into the fertile Pacific highlands arriving for orientation at Finca Nueva Alianza. Located about an hour away from Retalhuleu, Finca Nueva Alianza is a locally run farming cooperative that produces macadamia, coffee, and spring water, among other sustainable goods. We’ll settle down for a few days to get to know our new Dragons family, talk trip details, and acclimate to Guatemala, all mixed in with the occasional waterfall shower, local futbol game, and lessons in sustainable agriculture.

Leaving Nueva Alianza onJuly 1st, we’ll embark on our first challenging outdoor adventure as we’ll either trek and camp through the lush mountains surrounding Quetzaltenango to natural hot springsorsummit Tajumulco, the highest peak in Central America, for sunrise vistas stretching all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Feeling accomplished after our first overnight trek, onJuly 4thwe’ll arrive in Pachaj, a small K’iche Maya town located outside of Quetzaltenango. Here we’ll begin our first week of homestays and language school enabling us to get a first-hand perspective of thecampesinolifestyle and rich Mayan culture. We’ll also be working withEl Proyecto Chico Mendeshelping with reforestation projects and learning about the real impacts of globalization and development in local Mayan communities.

OnJuly 11thwe’ll move from a rural to urban setting for our second week of homestays and language school in Guatemala’s second largest city Quetzaltenango, or as locals call it, Xela. In your second week of 5 hour a day, one-on-one Spanish instruction you’ll really begin to flow with the language as you conversationally venture out in local markets and with your homestay families. Picturesquely surrounded by a verdant range of volcanoes, each one piercing the clouds like inverted ice cream cones, Xela will be a perfect base for us to deeply dive into our ISP projects and take advantage of the many educational resources in the city. Whether it be comparing the Ladino vs. Mayan cultures, local cooking, Latin dance, orphanages, NGOs, medical clinics, immigration, Guatemalan history, music, and more, Xela overflows with exciting opportunities.

Already growing weary of technicolored chicken buses? No hay problema! OnJuly 17th, we’ll depart Xela with our belongings on our backs as we trek into the “8th wonder of the world,” Lago de Atitlan. Yes, it’s going to be challenging, but it’s also going to be an awesome adventure as we push our perceived limitations hiking through pine forests and fields ofmilpa. We’ll practice our Spanish in the localaldeasalong the trail, take in the stunning vistas, and be rewarded with an unforgettable sunrise greeting to Lago de Atitlan. We’ll settle into the majestic and mysterious lakeside town of San Marcos where we’ll spend a much deserved day of rest, reflection, and swimming beneath volcanic peaks.

Leaving behind the clear waters of Atitlan, onJuly 19thwe’ll enter the Ixil triangle of Mayan communities where the tragic effects of the GuatemalanConflicto Armadostill linger. In our final homestay, we will see how the local community has persevered through a textile cooperative and fights to maintain their cultural heritage. Here we will also engage in a collaborative service project with the local community defined by the local needs.

As our trip nears a close, we’ll embark onJuly 22ndfor a final adventure to explore the crown jewel of Mayan archeological sites: Tikal. Shrouded in the tropical forests ofEl Petén, we’ll wander amidst towering Mayan pyramids forever engaged in a battle with the encroaching jungle vines. Here we’ll travel back in time to see the foundations of thecosmovisiónMayathat spawned modern Guatemala.

For our final days, we’ll stay at a secluded and tranquil Guatemalan farm in Poptun. We’ll have time to reflect on the totality of experiences that we’ll each carry back to our separate paths at home. OnJuly 28th, after 31 unforgettable days together, we’ll depart Guatemala. But unlike the distant land described in our Lonely Planet books upon arrival and the distant strangers posting on the Yak Yaks before we began, we will hopefully leave with a lasting personal connection to a new reality, new friends, and new perspectives on life.

One of us will be calling each of you in the coming weeks and cannot wait to hear about your own hopes and fears for this summer. Guatemala is just a few short weeks away and now is the time to think of any questions you may have.

Keep in mind thatwe will be at an all-staff orientation from the 14th-28th of Juneand thus we’ll have limited access to email/phone during that time. So start posting those thoughts and questions so we can get to know each other better and help prepare for our journey together!

Hello Guatemala Students!

During our time in Guatemala each one of you will have the opportunity toexplore and createan independant study project. When I combine these three words together, maybe the first thing that pops into your head is a library-focused, written report type of project. Guys, ISP's are mmm...a little bit diferent!

First and foremost ISP'sare creative, inspired byYOUR own curiosity and sense of wonder. You will be using Guatemala as your classroom and library. It can be somethingyou are really interested in learning how to do, a question you want to answer, a topic you want to explore, etc.

At this point we´dlike to to focus on choosing a project that is exciting, fun and keeps you inspired.

From experiences shared by past Guatemalan students a due to the lenght of the course, we´ve learned that it´s IDEAL for students to either know, or at least narrow down, the options for ISP topics BEFORE arriving in country. That way, it will be easier for you to start your ISP right away and for us to think of contacts, mentors and placements to facilitate this experience.

Prior to departure,Regina, Aaron and myself would like for all students to please post a Yak listing a few ISP options that sound exciting or of interest. Review the following listfor tentativeISP ideas and options.

- Traditional Mayan Medicine (Curanderos/as)

- Shamanism and Indigenous Spirituality

- The Catholic church and the influence on Guatemalan Culture

- Christian traditions active in Guatemala (Evangelicals, chatolics, etc.)

- Guatemalan's opinions of the United States

- Gender roles in Guatemalan Culture

- Womens issues/rights

- Immigration to the US. Deportee issues.

- Civil war and the Peace Accords in 1996

- Guatemalan Educational System

- American appereal effect on Maya Culture

- History of corruption in Guatemala

- Photography

- Weaving (history and/or practice)

- Enviromental preservation in an Agrarian State

- Deforestation in the rainforest

- Women's role in society

- Traditional cooking

- Mayan Calendar/ Cosmovision

- Latin rhythms dance

- Perception of family: Cross Cultural Study

- Effect of tourism

- La Marimba, national instrument

- Local folk stories and legends

- Guatemala Slang

- Maya dialects/languages

You are totally welcome to come up with any ideas not done before or on any list. Flip through your Lonely Planet or the Guatemalan Reader (both sent to you) for further ideas.

So, please go ahead and, each, post a response to this Yak telling us what sounds good to you. If you have further questions feel free to contact Regina, Aaron or myself.

Warmly,

Luispe
