[post_content] => So, we arrived in China 6 days ago and I am only now doing my first Yak Yak. The first day we checked into the hostel and adjusted to the time zone. After that we bought books for our Chinese classes and me and Zoe got a total of 5 books for our combined beginner's chinese class. We went to the teaching house to see where we would learn Chinese every day. We then took the night train to Dali and there are three beds on top of each other. In morning we went to the market to see if we could talk to people and absorb the culture. The next day we hiked up a mountain and and were able to see the entire town from the point that we hiked to. Yesterday we took an 8 hour bus ride to Kunming and then we were introduced to our host families. My family is nice and I have a 10 year old brother who likes soccer. We played soccer and I accidentally kicked a ball off of the building. Now I have to go to Chinese class, goodbye.

The first week of the trip has been interesting. We've done so many things so far that I can't imagine anything else they could come up with. However, it's still the beginning of this trip and there IS more to come.

The most exciting part of the trip so far, was being able to a market by ourselves, on our own with all the Chinese that we know (which isn't much so far). But the EXPERIENCE of talking and interacting without the distraction of English puts you in perspective. It scream: YOU'RE NOT IN AMERICA ANYMORE.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans."

~ When in China, do as the Chinese.

Thus ---

over the next five weeks ... we are temporary Chinese citizens.

Chinese now, foreign later.

[post_content] => today i went for my first run in china. technically it was mysecond if you count the brief run from the train station to the platform when i realized everyoe else had already boarded the train. the run itself took several attempts, since the first time i left the hostel icame across a stand selling baba (fried onion cakes) in the first three minutes, and had to buy one. three hours later, i tried again. this time i followed a trail out of Dali and through the corn fields and rice patties above the town. by the time the trail dead ended, i was about 200 feet above the town, in a kind of cemetery with tombs juttingout of the hillside. there were some great views of lake Erhai as well, but unfortunately i had forgotten to bring my camera along! it wasn't the highest point in town (sorry dad) but since the altitude was already getting to me, the remaining 6000 ft climb probably wouldnt have beeen a good idea. maybe i'll get there tomorrow ;)

morale definitely goes up after meals. this seemingly obvious bit of knowledge provides us with a way to thwart the "storming and norming" graph that came in the emotional support Dragons pamphlet. dinner was particularly useful for getting everyone out of the zombie state that a 14 hr flight will put you in. i finally learned how to use chopsticks, which was useful for tackling the giant random-chicken-parts monstrosity that was brought to our table at the end of the meal. breakfast was a bit of a shock; spicy beef noodles instead of honey bunches of oats. by using ome ap chemistry skills, we determined that adding vinegar cuts the chili level, allowing us to actually drink the broth. right now we're off to buy ssome chinese bread before the overnigth train to Dali.

Hello from Kunming!

It finally stopped raining today, and in about half an hour we leave for the overnight train to Dali for a couple days. We have yet to spend two consecutive nights in the same bed. Although after about 15 different cups of tea at a teahouse today, I'm far from tired.

Arrival

Zoe Holman,China: Language Intensive (6-week), Summer 2010

Description

After making 15 new friends and making it to Kunming, we successfully had dinner and went to bed. We arrived safely and the city is beautiful, sad to leave so soon for we are off to Dali but we’ll be back soon enough! Can’t wait for our journey to begin.
