Hola!

We´re writing from a tiny Internet store in the middle of Sorata! We´ve had many adventures so far, including buying tomatoes, potatoes, and getting laughed at by the Bolivian vendors. Our spanish isnt great but we´re improving... slowly. The Where There Be Dragons house is wonderful, although it is wasp infested.

It´s definitely created someexcitement. We have a fewcows and a neighboring donkey, and the obligatory roosters. It was quite a wakeup this morning, our first in country, and the roosters definitely helped out. After48 hours oftraveling, a good nights sleep was welcomed.Bed time wasaroundseven thirtyPM. But more about the scavenger hunt We´ve met a lot of little kids who are helping us out with our Spanish, and already found the hospital.Don´t worry, no visits yet. The people in the town have been very inviting, although the dogs less so. The altitude is a new experience for many of us and walking up hills is a challenge every day, but the coca has been helping.

ciacito for now!

We are sitting in an internet cafe in breathtaking (literally) Sorata. After a long flight and a bumpy bus ride, we arrivedat the program house. The past two days have been filled with orientation and super fun games. Today, we are on a mission to orient ourselves with the town of Sorata. The five of us are on a scavenger hunt in hopes to become comfortable with our surroundings. Tomorrow we head out for our first short trek up to a glacial lake. That´s all for now! Hasta luego.

Greetings Team Bolivia!

The three of us (along with 80+ instructors and administrators from all over the world) have been enjoying the long sunny days and cool starry nights in the Eastern Sierras here in California. We are fortunate to be in such an inspiring atmosphere with the jagged peaks of the Sierras and the high alpine lakes, but it only makes us more excited to get back to the rugged peaks of the Andes in just a couple of weeks!

We wanted to touch base and post a reminder about the requirements for a 90-day tourist visa for US Citizens in Bolivia:

(please note that all pieces are required for travel to Bolivia for Canadian citizens except for the $135 fee)

  • Your current passport (valid until at least February 8, 2011).

  • $135 US (cash only). Exact change HIGHLY recommended. Please see "Money Talk" yak yak post for details on serial numbers not accepted in Bolivia
  • Two passport photos.
  • Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination on the original (yellow) World Health Organization Immunization Record card.
  • Completed copy of visa application (Instructors will provide these and will be able to help fill them out in the airport in Miami if you do not have one already).
We hope you are getting excited!
Just think: ten days from now, we will be exploring the market in Sorata, testing out our Spanish and walking in the shadow of sacred snow-capped mountains.
Jallalla!
Helen, Britta & Steve

Hi everyone!

So I am finally yakking now that school's over and I can really get excited. I'm Erin and I live in southern California, about halfway between LA and San Diego. I'm 17 and going into my senior year. Outside of school I read a ton, write, and figure skate. Last summer I went on the Morocco Dragons trip which was pretty much amazing. I've taken Spanish in school for a few years but my actual Spanish speaking is kind of embarrassingly bad, so I'd love to work on that in Bolivia.

I really can't wait to meet you all and get started!

An important note about money in Bolivia:

  • Please check the serial numbers on any and all bills that you will be bringing to Bolivia. There are certain serial numbers that are not accepted in Bolivia due to a former high frequency of counterfeited bills. [**Reminder that you will need to have $135 in EXACT CHANGE for your visa upon arrival**].
  • DO NOT bring bills that have a serial number beginning in "CB".
  • Also, please inspect all bills and make sure they do not have any marks, stains, small rips, tears or excessive creases. These bills can be difficult to exchange in Bolivia.
  • If you plan to access your bank account with an ATM/Debit card, please call your bank before you leaveand inform them that you will be traveling to Bolivia and that they should expect foreign transactions. This is a good measure to prevent having your bank freeze your account for "irregular activity".
  • Please consider bringing your money in just cash and an ATM/Debit account. There are plenty of ATMs in the larger cities and access is quite easy. Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, but are still used only in major cities. Traveler's Checks can be quite difficult to use because of high service fees and the fact that there are only a few places in the whole country that will accept them.
We hope this information is helpful!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.
Paz,
Britta, Steve & Helen

Greetings Team Bolivia!

Steve, Britta and I should be contacting you guys over the phone to chat in the next week or so, before we head out to California for staff orientation. We are so excited to meet you guys in just about three weeks and to get our adventure started!

As school winds down and summer picks up, you are probably all beginning to think about packing. We know that the pack list may seem overwhelming at first, and that since we will be traveling to lots of different climate zones, it feels like you will have to bring a lot with you. Here are a few tips that will hopefully be helpful along the way:

  • Packs: The bottom line is that your pack is the right size IF you are able to fit all your essential gear AND you are able to carry it yourself (which includes picking it up and putting it on your back by yourself!) Many women may find that a 5,000 cubic inch pack (as the pack list recommends) is too big. Women have smaller frames and are often more comfortable carrying a 3,500 to 4,500 cubic inch pack. I carry a 4,000 cubic inch pack, and it serves me just fine. Having less space also helps me to cut down on extra clothes and things I don't really need.
  • Daypacks: The pack list recommends carrying a daypack that can fold up into your bigger pack. We would like to recommend INSTEAD that you bring a sturdy daypack (just like the one you have probably used to carry your schoolbooks for years! Nothing too fancy is necessary!) We will be traveling and trekking a lot. You will need to be able to carry at least 2 liters of water, snacks, warm layers and your raingear (at minimum) in your daypack. We will most likely be hiring mules to carry our group gear and large packs on the high altitude treks, but a sturdy daypack to use while we are trekking will be ESSENTIAL.
  • Sleeping Bags/Liners: Another essestial piece of gear. It really does get COLD up in the mountains (and we will be there mid-winter!), so a 0 degree bag is actually recommended. We aren't exaggerating. If you are a warm sleeper, a 10 degree bag should suffice, but not recommended for women, as we tend to lose more heat when we sleep. A light sleeping sheet/liner is also good for added warmth and can double as a light sleeping bag when in warmer areas!
  • Clothing: Think LAYERS. Also, try to bring clothes that will work in multiple situations. Things that dry fast, don't show dirt as easily and don't wrinkle too much are PERFECT. A few well thought out outfits/layers are worth a lot more than lots and lots of clothes to lug around!

I hope these tips help you begin to get organized. Please feel free to keep posting questions and introductions on the yak board!

Hasta pronto mis amigos,

Helen

Hey Dragons. Only three more weeks to go (give or take) before we meet up and fly down to La Paz. I just thought I would send a couple more photos out. Take a look, dream and image.

Also, I wanted to response to Sarah's question about readings. I hear you on the the intimidation factor of the reading list. I often find this hard when you lack a context of what you are reading about. Just remember they are only "suggested readings" and the real life context is coming really soon. Soak up what you can. Of the list my favorites are probably "Motor Cycle Diaries" (also a great movie) and "Whispering in the Giants Ear".

Hasta Pronto!

Steve
