Hi Team Sikkim!

Our trip is drawing near and it is time to get inspired if you aren't already. To help you do that I have provided a list of potential ISP topics. You will have a week dedicated to exploring a topic of your choice so finding one that really inspires you is key. The list may be overwhelming at first, and you may not even know where to start. That's okay.If you needsome guidance, dig intoyour Sikkim Reader or doing some internet browsing. If you are still having difficutly finding a topic, try to narrow it down to 2-3 topics and we can help you narrow down further upon arrival. Keep in mind that this is not an extensive list of the possibilities. If you have something in mind that is not listed here, go for it. The goal here is to have an ISP topic in mind before we arrive in India so we can make the best use of our time while we are there. Keep in mind that the more specific your topic, the more meaningful and deep it will be. So, give it some thought, and share with all of us your hopes!

Dan orI will be calling you this week, if we haven't already, to discuss ISP topics and to answer any questions you may have. In the meantime feel free to contact any of us with questions, concerns or just to say hi!

I'm changing my answer to boxer briefs. I don't know what I was thinking.

yay morequestions....

1. I'm down for the trek. I think it sounds like a perfect way to end

2. Um, I swear they do not make dresses that aresleeved, do not show your chest, and are passed your knees all at once. But I haven't given up on my search yet. I've gotten some shirts from the REI outlet online. I'd try there.

3. I really want to work with women somehow. But I am also scared about that because the feminist edge to me hasdefinitelybeen exposed through the classes I have taken at Berkeley and I know life for women in India is very different than the US, let alone Berkeley, CA. I'm nervous how I will react.

Brigette

P.s. Aaron, we are practically neighbors!

Hi,

I'm from Palo Alto, California. That's right next to Stanford, so I guess I live in a university town. I'm a junior (soon to be senior) in high school and like most all the classes that don't include math or science. I am also on the cross country/track team and that takes up a lot of my free time (I run six days a week). I like going biking with friends, generally being outdoors and baking. One of my friends got me into it and warm chocolate chip cookies from scratch sure beat the ones that you can buy at the store. Besides that, I have a twin brother and an older one who is in college. See ya guys in Los Angles.

Sweet start to yakking.

1. No chapstick! I'm a barenekked lips girl. It feels like I smothered my mouth in jelly.

2. Boxer briefs, but I'm not the one wearing them.

3.I hate dentists more than anything. The worst part is when they brush your teeth for you and then practically scrape your gums off with that utensil of horror.

A few questions of my own:

1. How many of you are up for the optional trek?

2. Where are the rest of the Sikkim girls shopping for sleeved, yet comfortable clothes?

3. What are some of the internships you're all thinking about?

It's such a pleasure to meet you! My name's Cecilia and I'm from Vienna, VA (that's northern Virginia, not the hickish Virginia you're thinking about!). I graduated from my high school in Washington DCyesterday and I'm headedfor Reed College in Portland OR next year, most likely to pursue my far-fetched dreams of becoming a writer of sorts.

That being said, I'm also super crazy about music (I'm seeing Grizzly Bear tonight!). I listen toa lot of itand have been playing piano for way too long. Some other interests are lazy biking, flying kites, reading, road trips, and making clothes.I act (I was Captain Hook in Peter Pan once!) and I'm pretty outgoing. I'm practically carnivorousand I'm looking forward to possibly taking a cooking class in Sikkim. Exploring outside, especially barefoot, is always fun to do on the weekends. I'm not a hiker, but I look forward to becoming as rugged as you guys seem to be.

Although I'm not religious, this program attracted me because there are pieces of religion that are identifiable to everyone, especially regarding older religions likeBuddhism and Hinduism. The program isn't "just right" for me, because, if it was, I wouldn't be going out of my comfort zone. A lot of the things I'll learn are beyond my comprehension right now, but luckily, I'm a curious person. I've never been to India, but my interest in it was weirdly enough sparked by a The Decemberists song. I became enamored with India's mystery, and have beenmaking visits to Indian supermarketsand outdoormarkets in Washington DC just to get a feel (nothing compared to many of your trips or classes on it). I like to think that my naivety means that I'll have a more open mind.

I'm so excited to get to know you all. See you soon!

You guys!!!!

I propose we step up the yak yakking. We have a month until we see each others beautiful and anticipating faces and we have yet to all introduced ourselves! Aren’t there suppose to be 10ish people coming? WHO ARE YOU, SHOW YOURSELVES. Other summer courses have four pages of yak yak posts already. we can do this.

To get the conversation flowing (feel free to answer with as much detail as you like)...

1. What is your favorite chap stick flavor and brand?

2. Boxers or Briefs?

3. What is your least favorite part of going to the dentist?

Okay so my answers.

My favorite chap stick is the good old carmex. Not the new flavored stuff, just the original. Except someone just told me that chap stick companies make their products not so they actually cure chapped lips but so you get addicted to the product and buy more. So basically we are coating our lips in waxy stuff that does absolutely nothing to help our chapped selves.

I like briefs on othersbut I personally like to wear boxers. However I don't think I own any.

My least favorite part about going to the dentists is when they wipe that stuff that feels like toothpaste flavored sand all over your teeth. It crunches between my teeth when I talk and chew all day long and makes me cringe like the nails on a chalkboard feel. ew.

Way too excited,

Brigette

HEY GUYS!!!

My name is Sarah, I'm a junior in high school (about to start the hellish college process!! yay..haha), and I'm from Los Angeles. I am sooo thrilled for this program!!! We're going to a place that is sandwiched between china, nepal, bhutan, and west bengal...we're going to a place where different cultures meet one another from all sides, and I am DYING to experience this place!! annddd I'm dying to meet you guys!

So a little bit about me: I practice Nichiren Buddhism, which is probably very different from the Buddhism that is practiced in Sikkim, but I'm interested in comparing the religions! I play the cello, I run cross-country, laughing is my favorite hobby, I sing and act, two things that REALLY scare me are standardized tests and centipedes, I love all different kinds of music, I think chicken tikka masala is the best dish on the planet, I attempt to snowboard but often fail miserably haha, annddd I love to dialogue...yah....thats all i can think of right now.. :)

I'm sooo excited to go on an enlightening adventure with you guys! The closest I've been to Asia is Australia (and that's when i was three haha) so this is gonna be really amazing and fresh!

SEE EVERYBODY ON JUNE 26TH!!!! (ive used way too many exclamation points i know)

Welcome aboard!

I love reading little snippits about each of you! It is you all that gets me more and more excited about our upcoming program. I have also been reading a bit about each of you and your personal interests and all I can say is we are going to have a rockin' program! Each of you are bringing so many unique and valuable experiences to the table and your eagerness to learn is already evident. We will have great adventures together!

At the moment Sid, Dan and myself are working on creating an extraordinary intinerary that will bring us into the mists in the hills of Sikkim and into the villages that lay hidden there; into the hustling, bustling markets of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and most importantly, deeper into ourselves, a journey that will leave us changed and forever curious.

We will keep you all posted as the itinerary develops. Keep checking in with the Yak for more info.

I am looking forward to meeting each of you in about a month!

Peace,

Germaine

Hey guys im really excited to be going on this trip with all of you. I've never been to Asia even though my little sister is adopted from Cambodia. I've been a practicingBuddhistsince i was 8 years old and this was the same time i started training in martial arts, specificallyTang Soo Do, which is a korean style that translates to "Art of the Knife Hand." I just recentlyreceivedmyblack-beltwith the Western Tang Soo Do Federation, and in April I went toAlbuquerque New Mexico for the 2009 Martial Art Nationals, in which i took first place in Koshiki "Full contact sparring." That qualified me to go to 2009 Martial Art WorldChampionshipswhich take place a few days after we get back in New Orleans. Anyway that seems to be my biggest achievement yet.
