Hello to everyone back home!

Everything here in India is incredible!!!

We've already done so much.

I'm overwhelmed in a good way by all the people and places we've encountered.

We are now in a town called Kalimpong. It is on the border of West Bengal and Sikkim.

It is absolutely beautiful here! Everything is lush and green and everyone is very friendly. The town is refreshing after being in the crazy city of Kolkata.

Today we will be starting our first home-stays and will be able to connect with the people more directly.

There's more to say, but no time to say it.

-Ella

so where was i?

Kolkata.

We stuck our hands and faces out of the taxi, into the balmy air of Kolkata. At first it just felt exciting and strange. But then, the farther in we got, the dirtier itgot. I tapped Sarah B. (Jeti) on the arm - "look, there are people sleeping on the street" - I was suprised but then i started getting usedto passing dark bodies, dirty bodies sleeping on cardboard or in rickshaws. It felt very surreal. No one said anything because there was nothing to say.

We were watching Kolkata while it slept.

we arrived at our ..hotel? Did i mention how hot and humid it was? Your own sweat became a second skin,it was unavoidable. The rooms were covered in tiles- it was gorgeous. There were cockroaches. We allslept in as little clothing as possible- it was too hot to care about exposing body parts.Usually the place you sleep is your sancuary, your safe zone, your hiding place- but here, our sleeping place was Kolkata, there was nocomfort zone, no place to retreat after a long sweaty day in Bangkok and a four hour flight. I felt incredibly alive.

In the morning- after getting three? hours of sleep - we stepped outside and saw everthing that we saw at 2 in the morning through the window of a taxi, but ALIVE ..awake. It was..another Universe... so many people of the same hair color and general skin tone, but all their faces said different things. It was so incredibly and overwhelmingly dirty. There were so many people and they ALL stared at us. No driver followed the rules of the road - there were no rules of the road - the cars were like people pushing their way to the front of the line. The sound of honking was incessant.

There were so many poor people, yet so many advertisements for extravagant products...who were these companies advertising to?

The market- about twelve indian men surounding us trying to lead us to their store. So fast moving, persisant... the train - A family..mother, father, older son (11), younger son (3) - We attempted to talk to them, showed the older boy pictures from our guide book, succeeded in communicatingour route of travelto the mother - the three year old was so hyper - he was crawling ALL over me as i was writing in my journal.. the father and the passengers around us were laughing... this was the highlight of the day, becausein Kolkata, we made no connections to the people- they were just passing faces, but in this train, as i laughed at this little boy and his innocence, the father was laughing too..we were laughing about the same thing and we didnt even speak the same language.

ok...till next time.

Namaste, Sarah Kanchi

When I pictured Thailand (which, of course, I didn't since I wasn't aware we'd be spending the day there), I imagined oranges, turquoises, and reds, tea houses, spectacular foliage, and long hair woven with flowers. Those colors, it turns out, only manifested as the cabs' pecular paint jobs and those tea houses were in fact stands that happened to be out of tea most of the time.

Our first meal in Asia was a compilation of the random and strange food we scavenged for at stands. We saw rabbit and quail egg bao, kitten-shaped donuts, and some strange, fried, orange meat that, while we still have no idea what it was, turned out to be delicious. Fresh mango and seedless watermelon stands were everywhere.

A highlight of our Bangkok adventure was at a tourist trap of a restaurant by the water. After taking a glipse of the dried fish and strange, prickly fruits outside the ferry dock, we decided it'd be best to play it safe. After ordering, a waitress siddled up to Dan, one of our guides. She stroked his beard and asked for a picture of herself, planting a big, wet kiss on his cheek. She proceded to let down her ankle-length hair and re-tie it twice and walk over to Olivia to give her a surprise makeover (re-braiding her hair).

I'd write about India, but I'm out of time. Peace!

OMG india is soo intense..im in calcutta and there are homeless people everywhere you turn, and people are peeing on the streets. it is sooo dirty and polluted you can not even imagine. Beggers on the streets beg for money, it is haard to say no because most of the time it is a little child or a mother with a baby. I have NEVER seen so much poverty it is wrose than any 3rd world country i have been to. Strangely however INdia has a magic to it..people procrastinate and almost run you over but i LOVE it here. It has defff been an interesting experience so far. I love you my sweeeet. I hope all is well.

Hello Everybody!

I am writing from an internet cafe in the middle of the hustling bustling city of Kolkata! Can you believe it?! I certainly am having trouble fathoming the fact that we are all in India! It is truly amazing here. I wish I could post some of the pictures I have taken. Every street corner holds a beautiful image to capture. We are going to leave for sikkim in a few hours, and will be on a 12 hour train ride! yikes. But everyone here is amazing and I doubt it will seem that long. This morning we ate at an authentic Indian Cafe and I have to say it was one of the best meals I have ever had! and the chai! it was all amazing! well we have to leave now, but I will be yak-ing very soon. I love all of you.

Olivia

There is no such thing as boredom when you are with Dragons.

I'm looking forward to 26 more days without boredom - can you imagine living an entire month where every single day and every single experience is new? Sometimes stressful, sometimes tedious, sometimes hot, sometimes dirty...but always new.

I would write about bangkok...but i have two more minutes in this internet cafe in the middle of Kolkata....SO .....Kolkata....we arrived at the kolkata at 1 in the morning. Ive never been more energized at 1 in the morning. In our small taxis we made our way through the streets of Kolkata- the streets seemed to be dead, but after a short while you began to notice that those random shapes on the side of the road were people sleeping on cardboard sheets and dogs looking for food.

NO i have to go now....ill be back

peace. Sarah Kanchi

Hello Team Sikkim!!

We are finishing up our staff orientation in the Sierra Nevada of California, and heading down to LA with much anticipation and excitement to meet you all and begin our jounrey to India!

Several questions have been raised and will hopefully be answered below, however succinctly. First, charging cameras in Sikkim ought to be fairly easy. Most of them will only require a plug converter which we can pick up in India; occassionally power might be an issue. Second, a comfortable pair of closed toed shoes is necessary, meaning good hiking boots or trail shoes. It would also be a good idea to bring a pair of flip-flops (or plan on picking some up in country). Third, A small picture album (if you like) is okay, but be very concious of the weight and bulk. Other than a trek, we ought to be able to bath daily and brush as often as desired. Dan likes to start the trip with one roll of TP, but it is also available in India. We wouldn't pack a typical bath towel, but a smaller quick dry version is a good idea. Although, the Indian variety might be prove more functional (they're just a little difficult to find sometimes).

Finally, please bring your Sikkim readers to LA

We are looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Safe travels,

I-Team
