Greetings!

I am excited to provide the following update, received via satellite phone yesterday, the 20th, in the am. It was evening time on the 20th local time and the group was about to settle in for the night.

"We've crossed seven high passes over the last 8 days. The terrain here is unbelievable. We are oftentimes rewarded with views that drop 4-5000 feet into surrounding river valleys. We are transitioning from a very arid region north of Zanskar and starting to enter an area that's greener and more alive with wild rosebushes. We just hit the ZanskarRiver today and haven't seen much water until this point. Our campsite for the evening is ina valley that's fairly green. The valley is called 'Hanumil' and there are 5 or so locals' homes here. We've been eating well, including some homemade peanut butter cookies thatNatasha and Christine whipped together and'baked'dutch oven-style with afire on top ofa pot. They were really good once you got past thegas and fire flavor! Students are beginning to workmore and more alongside the cook crew. Our health is generally good with a few students experiencingsome minor gastro-intestinal issues that we're not too worried about - seems like it has been going around. We plan to take a rest day here in the next day or so and then hit the trail again. Sendour best to all parents and we'll call again with another Yak update when we can." Hello Everyone,

Greetings from Leh! This is a quick note to let you all know that in just a few hours, we will be packing our bags into jeeps and driving 4 hours to the beginning of the Zanskar mountain range, the starting point of our trek. Over the next 22 days, we will be traveling as pilgrims do, through sacred mountain passes and valleys, and getting to experience life as nomads on the high Himalayan plateau! For many of our students, the trek is the main highlight of this trip. They are eagerly awaiting the chance to spend 3-weeks traveling on foot through one of the most incredible mountains ranges on earth!

We will not have access to phone or Internet until our return to Leh on August 2nd, but rest assured that we will be posting glorious photos and stories of our journey once we are back in Leh. Also, please note that per our safetyprotocols, we will be in regular contact with our office in Boulder via our satelite phone during the trek.

Until August 2nd, enjoy summer in July.

We wish you allwell from the mountains!

Best,

Christine

So the five days of solo homestay in Saboo is over, and we're back in Leh, sending calls and facebook messages, buying peanut butter and sunblock, and enjoying a rare indulgence in our comfort foods--pizza and french fries on the terrace of "Pizza de Hut" before we leaveLeh for three weeks. From what we've been told, all our minds are about to be blown: we'll climb about 7 17,000+ft passes in the first ten days, and we'll have SEVENTEEN horses as part of our caravan. i mean, really?

One thing most of us felt in common about our 5 day individual homestays was that at times we were bored out of our minds. At first this was excruciating, but after a while of being forced to live like Ladaki's do--really really slowly--I gained some perspective and saw how in love I am with being busy, all the time. So no, i dont think i could live like a Ladaki for much longer, at least in the summer, when the answer to "what is there to do today?" was always "nothing, no work."

by the way, I'm the kid who had HAPE, so if i end up getting evacuated before these crazy twenty days are over, i guess my family at home can say i told you so

miss everyone at home,

Marty

Sotomorrow we leave on the trek... three weeks without any of the few western conveniences we've enjoyed up until now (i.e. showers, computers, the occational western meal.) Right now this seems quite daunting. However, ifall goes as planned in three weeks we will happily return to Leh a fitter, closer, and inevitably dirtier group of children. Hopefully there will be deeper changes too, I guess I'll have to let you know in August.

Love to all at home

We've just returned from our homestay in Saboo and are now in Leh for a day. Tomorrow we will be leaving for ourthree week trek in Zanskar.
Over the pastfive days, I've been staying with a relatively prosperous family in Saboo. Rather then trying to write a coherent Yak Yak on the homestay, I'm just going to describe a few memories that stand out.
I arrive at the house and am left alone in a room. As the minutes pass by, I begin to worry the the entire stay is going to involve me doing nothing and being ignored. Fortunately, only a few minutes later, my homestay mom takes me out into the fields and shows me how to sow a field of mustard and then operate the complicated series of irrigation trenches and canals to water it.
My homestay dad gestures at a bowl of barley and tells me that we are going to make "skul" which is "local food." As it turned out, skul was a soup of barley dumplings with turnips. He had me fold the dumplings. While he was encouraging, it was clear I wasn't doing a very good job. After lunch, he takes me upstairs to a room I hadn't been in. It turned out to be empty and under renovation. He showed me how to plaster the walls with mud. That went a lot better then the dumplings. So much so that that was what he had me do for the next two days.
The group is about to go on a day hike and my homestay family is preparing the lunchI will bring with me. To my horror, my homestay mom takes out some pieces of bread, butters it, and then slices some raw cucumbers and tomatoes onto it. There was no way I could safely eat that, but I wasn't going to tell her that only minutes before I am to leave. I contemplategoing the entirehike without food with dread. Then, to my amazement, she produces a panini press. Suddenly my day became a lot better.
We are sitting cross-legged on the floor eating what could be best described as lo-mein (it wasn't, but that's the easiest way to describe it). My home stay dad produces a tube of ketchup that I know must have been explicitly purchased for me during his trip into town earlier that day. Clearly he thinks that as an American I must like to put ketchup on everything. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. After dinner I see him reading the back of the packaging, clearly wondering why I wouldn't eat it. The next meal, the ketchup is produced again. This time, I ask him if they normally use ketchup. Conversation around the table stops abruptly. The homestay mom answers with a vague "sometimes." I give in and pour some ketchup on the noodles. The family looks satisfied. To my surprise, it doesn't taste bad

We wake up once again to surroundings neither familiar nor comfortable, yet magnificent in their approach towards waking. The mountains that surround Leh force upon us a sense of both humility and wonder, for we know that in just a short time, they will be not only our homes but also our providers. We set off for our five-day homestays today, bringing a close to what can be described as the introduction to our six-week long expedition. We started off, and persist to this moment, in a state of advanced travelerhood simply known as tourism. In Delhi moreso than Leh was this closer to the truth, but nevertheless here we find ourselves as the perpetual angrespa, or whitish tourists. Sure we have Rigzin, who can only be described as the Godfather of Ladakh, but everywhere we go, our uniqueness betrays us. And though this seems like a constant, the next five days present a new opportunity for the group typically impossible for many tourists: assimilation through deed. In my dream of how these next five days play out, I find myself waking up early to tend to the livestock and work the fields alongside my host-family, strikingly aware of my separatism because of what can only be described as my nonexistent skills at Ladakhi, yet with a clear mind, knowing that my work brings about a desirable end unreachable without me. Maybe I'm setting the bar a little too high, but what more can one hope for? Sure, we are all filled with dread. Rigzin spoke last night of dinner at 10, wakeup at 6. Families the size of a small commune all under one roof.A dinner of lentils. Every night. Without fail (I will say, after the daal at the guest house, this worries me less.) But the hopeof a solid connection to the people of a place that we have all learned to love is strong, and toa large extent, possible. From the first day on the roof of the guest house, where the stirring views of Leh, Choglamsar and the mountain that sits somewhere around 20000 feet awakened adesire for adventure, we have yearned for such a connection. Well here we go. We return on the 12th, but there is a possiblity of internet connection in Sabu (our host-village. Sorry I neglected to mention that.) So until then: we are safe, we are happy, and we are hopeful. Jule!
