Sooooo... Trevor sat us down at the program house and basically told us to plan the next 4 weeks of the trip. After about two hours, we had plans for all of 5 days. First things first, we took a sleeper bus to LiJiang which is in north eastern Yunnan. From there we had a relatively short ride to Tiger Leaping Gorge where we spent the next two days. It was incredible. I would post some of the amazing views of the towering mountians, but i broke my camera there so i need to get it repaired before i can actually access anything on it. Good times.

At the end of the trek we made a trip by rickety bus [the only kind there is in china] to a Hui/Tibetian village about an hour away from the exit of the gorge. We originally thought wed be spending three nights in the village but couldnt get the homestays figured out quickly enough so spent the first night ina guest house outside the village. The next two nights we switched off between a different guest house and homestays. Throughout the whole time, we were fed yak butter tea. It was gross. And ive liked everything here. That tea was ew.

Im cutting this pretty short because i have to go get the screen in my camera fixed. It completely shattered in the gorge when it aggrivatingloy broke my fall off a big rock. As i said, Good Times.

I tried to yak a few days ago, but it had some trouble.

Tiger Leaping Gorge was beautiful. I've seen several scenic mountains but this one truly stands out. I and the rest of the group took several picutres but pictres do not do it justice. Several parts of it were hard because of the steep grades, the heat, and the local boy trying to sell us a donkey ride for most of the way, but the views made up for it and several parts were a breeze.

The Tibetan Hui village was also beautiful: surrounded by mountains, trees, and streams. It was so isolated and peaceful. Homestay families were very welcolming and friendly, but unfortuanetly we only could only spend so much time with them. Anna, Jesse S, and I taught some younger kids basic English: "What is your name?", "My name is...","How old are you?","I am ... (years old)", "Where are you from?","I am Chinese," colors, and numbers 1-10 (I taught a few zero as a bonus). That nightwe played some basketball with thelocals. Lets just say that they play with a different set of rules than we are used to. We lostby one point, but some of us want tocall it a draw.

Lashihai looks like a great place to continue my language learning experience. My homestay family speaks almost no English, so I should be able to get plenty of practice here. We have resumed Chinese classes as normal and I have been able to take in some more information to practice with my home stay family and the villagers. I even heard from Trevor that I will be able to continue to research my ISP (business and economics) in Lashihai by talking to the head of an ecotourism business and the party head of the village. Yesterday we had a cultural photography class and discussed what it means to be a good photographer and the impact photos have on societies. Then to practice, we went around the villagein groups of two (I was with Jesse S.)talking to people and trying to get a picture of them. A few said no or did not seem interested, but we found some kids who were very excited about having their picture taken and seeing videos taken of them.

This past week has been truly special and I'm sure the second half will be as well.

We have just gotten back from possibly the most beautiful five days of my life. We hiked through tiger-leaping gorge and then into a Hui villiage. I loved every part of it, especially my homestay mother in the villiage, and yet i can't help but find myself thinking of my nai nai (grandmother) back in kunming. I don't know if she has any idea how much of an impact she has had on my experience in china, but the few short conversations in a mix of kunming hua and pu tong hua were some of my most special here. During my first day in Kunming, when i fell asleep on the couch, totally exhuasted due to jet lag, I woke up to her laying me down and covering me with a blanket. After i told her that i loved bannanas, there were always a huge stack on the living room table, and when i told her that the corn she had made me was delicious, I never went a day without it. She was the one that showed me around Kunming when my parents were working, taking me shoping at Walmart, and laughing at my astonishment of the huge whole pigs hanging on the walls, and talking to me everywhere we went in Kunming hua, at such a speed that even if I had a stronger grasp at the dialect, I still would have had trouble understanding. I became very good at noding, and saying hao hao hao, or asking a question at the right time. She loved answering any question, either about herself, or why there were stone lions in from of all the banks with detailed explainations of which i could catch only a few words. I took to doing my chinese homework sitting next to her at night as she watched her soap operas. Even though I could understand very little of the language, I could always guess what was happening or would happen next in the plot. She was always very impressed when i would point to a character and say "bu hao de ren." But she was most impressed when I declared that I could walk to school by myself, and if I was ever home later then expected, she got very worried, and would answer the door with a "ni hui jia le!"
I loved my new Hui homestay mother, and i am so excited for our next homestay at la shi hai, but I can't help but miss my nai nai.

After a few days of radio silence, we have made our way by bus, ferry and foot back to the civilized world. The last five days and the next fifteen or so mark the rural aspect of our travels, and the contrast has been immense. Skyscrapers have been replaced by massive, snow capped mountains; busy streets by desolate roads frequented by goat herders. The changes that a few bus rides can bring are mind-boggling.

The past few days have seen us through exhausting treks along the Yangtze River and among some of the most spectacular scenery ever,English classes with the locals, and the biggest cultural differences I've ever experienced. Now we embark on the second leg of our rural journey...

We gave them all English names: Rosie, Lucie, Jonny, Sammy...which they really liked. We had a lot of fun playing games and spending time with these adorable kids. I fell in love with all of them and was disappointed after the 2 hours was up. This was an experience that I will always keep with me.

our trek through tiger leaping gorge was my favorite part of the trip yet. we took a 9 hour bus ride to lijiang and another 2 hour ride to the mouth of the gorge. the first part of the trek is a long, but beautiful, haul uphill. the altitude was a bit of a problem for the group, as most of us live in lower areas. people, including myself, had difficulty walking very far or very fast, but we all managed to push through to the top. the views were spectacular. we stayed at the tea-horse guesthouse for the night. the next day, we hiked for several hours on a level path clinging to the side of the mountain. i wanted to make up time we had lost yesterday on this easy bit, but i ended up getting farther ahead of everyone than i felt comfortable with, so i waited for them next to a beautiful waterfall. the second part of the hike was a very steep downhill which was pretty hard on the knees. we had lunch at another guesthouse at the end of the gorge next to a frickin enourmous mountain. good trip.

Nimen hao!

Today we arrived in Lijiang from a four day trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge and a Hui/Tibetan village nearby. The days were filled with tons of climbing, which my calf muscles can account for. We hiked up many miles and stayed in guest houses along the way to the village. During this adventure we finally got to enjoy yak butter tea, which our instructor has been praising the whole trip. The views were incredible and it was interesting seeing the other side of China. Not the busycity side with heavy traffic and pollution, but the very serene natural side of China. In our village we got to experience living with one of the Hui/Tibetan families. I continued to see the Chinese hospitality in this homestay, since my family insisted on me eating more and more food whether or not it was a burden on their resources. We also got to play a Meiguo vs Zhongguo basketball game (American vs. Chinese), which got a little competitive but at the end of the day we were still happy to be aquainted with each other. China is still exciting, and I'm becoming more and more immersed in the culture.

[post_content] => Well, we are at our half way point of our trip. In the past weeks I've had chinese class and have done a lot of trekking. The homestay in Kunming was a wonderful experience. My homestay family was very welcoming and treated me as part oftheir family. I met many extended family and they kapt on saying how beautiful I was. I thought it was very sweet. Well, leaving Kunming was sad just for the reason that I was leaving my homestay family. We decided as a group to trek Tiger Leaping gorge. We were only allowed to take our daypacks and pack clothes for 5 days. We took a eight hour sleeper bus to Lijiang and once we got there we headed off to the gorge. My knees were bothering me throughout the whole trek and it was difficult to enjoy..at first. Once we started to gain elevation I saw what nature had created. It was so breathtaking..it seemed so unreal. It was a long day and we had to stop and stay at a guesy house along the trek. Then the next morning we continued and finallly accomplished the difficult hike. We then submerged into the rural villages of china. It was very different compared to the city!!!!! We couldn'y start our homestay, so we stayed ina guest house and the next morning hiked to the village. There we had chinese class and made dumplings. Then, in pairs we did a homestay. My homstay mother was so sweet and it she practically lived by herself. I was sad to leave since we were swithching the next day. I helped, along with others, with bringing down bricks and then I taught english to three 15 year old girls. Then we made noodles for dinner. They were so good as well. Then we had a basketball game with the locals and it was really fun...just that they cheated. Then during the night there was a thunder storm but it was cool. Now we are in Lijiang and about to leave to Lashirhi. I am excited to meet my homestay family and ready to enjoy the second halp of this experience.

Hi all!

This is a quick email to let you know that we have spent an amazing few days trekking through the Tiger Leaping Gorge in northern Yunnan. The weather was fantastic as we made our way along the ridges alongside some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Internet access will be limited over the next 3 days as we will be staying in a local Tibetian village with homestay families. After this time we will get to Lashihai where access to the net won't be a problem. Until then, zai jian.
