[post_content] => So basically we're still in China. We left our rural Home stays two days ago and everybody was pretty sad. After 10 days, we'd only started to really know our families and have fun with them. I only found out the last day that my home stay father was a dance off king. I'm sure separating was hard for them too. Now we're in Lijiang, tonight we're taking a bus and tomorrow, our city home stay beggins. Everybody is either anxiousor excited because of how differentthis is gonna be. That's all I have to say about that.

In the middle of somewhere i sit perched on a rock

Some Valley

Some Culture

Someones home lies in front

Some tree at my left

Some ants at my right

Some sun watching as some child runs about

Some bountiful field, a muddy winding road

Some suspicious dog, and a nonchalant cow

Some steam from a wok

There's the scrape of some boots

Over there some man lighting his pipe

Right here is some path that leads over there

Where some man decked in camo speaks his mind

With some history and some future cultures clash

The unknown reigns supreme as conclusions are misleading

Call me impersonal, one can not

I just know little of what lies in front

Some would call the land in way

distant and unknown, others simply know of it as home

I'm not one to judge, not one to analyze

however honesty, realism, and observation pass these eyes

Culture shock a cliché

Alien too negative

Right now I am somewhere

I Know that

I love that

Yesterday was a free day with our host families. My host sister and I met up with some other kids from our group and their host siblings because they knew each other (Sam, Charles, Maxie, and I). In the evening we went to see Harry Potter!!!!! the new one. it was pretty amazingly awesome. Today we started our run and dive, head-first, into our Independent Study Projects. We have 5 days to complete them. Today I played lots more Mah Jong. i did not win.

Also today, as a group, we talked a lot and had a really good discussion about an article we read called "Why we travel" by Pico Iyer. we talked about how we travel to leave our home and our familiarities to go to a new place and learn how different people live their lives. Very interesting. All in all, our homestays here are going really well.

On the first day of our Tiger Leaping Gorge trek we had a discussion and debrief of the service project we did in Nanyao village. We asked Mulaoshi (the head of the elementary school where we attended our language classes and a complete gangster) what he wanted, and we ended up putting in new floor boards in the dance classroom and painting on the exterior of the school (upon his request). It was in the debrief discussion that I realized that although I had taken an Introduction to Community Service class at my school, I had never really done this sort of service before. Often times projects are done out of an act of paternalism created by class or culture. For example, handing out sandwiches to the homeless in New York is a great action, but itstill carries a sense of doting. This service project felt more like an exchange. We had been catered to and housed so graciously by the Naxi villagers that it would have felt wrong not to return a favor. There was no sense of us helping out because of our wealth or status, but just working in order to show our appreciation. This was a very new experience to me, where I wasn't working for a feeling of self-accomplishment or because I was more priveleged, but simply as a friend.

Highlights of the past few days, drawn from the timestream at seemingly random intervals and here recalled with some semblance of order:

-Jesse and Eva teaching the kids at the school in Nanyao Village how to say "I love you", creating a so-called "personal army of love"

-The strange realization that chewing a certain Chinese candy very fast creates a colorful bubbly froth in the mouth that superficially resembles a combination between rabies and vomit

-A game of Catch the Frisbee with a bunch of kids that soon spun wildly out of control

-A series of basketball games in which Mark, one of our instructors, wreaked incredible and unintentional havoc among the students, resulting in him having to sit out in the final game--thankfully, I was on his team, and his antics combined with various other variables to keep us victorious in Round Robin for three games in a row

-The kids chasing Eric and Teddy around the school, dogpiling Eric, stealing his shoes and leaving him without one sandal for an entire class period

-The headmaster of that school belting out a Chinese song in a very good voice on the last day--and then shouting our MC down and singing another one, just because he felt like it, and because others wanted to hear more

-The clouds shrouding the mountains on Tiger Leaping Gorge, making it nearly impossible to see the peaks

-The monkey in the cage at Naxi Guest Hotel, apparently there for the sole purpose of having a monkey

-Checking the reviews for the newest Harry Potter movie from a computer in Tiger Leaping Gorge, and realizing that Roger Ebert gave Ice Age 3D: The Meltdown a higher score than he gave the new Harry Potter movie

-Eric's Chinese teacher's five reasons to study chinese: cultural learning, you get a grade, language learning and cultural learning

-A woman sitting in a small room by herself open to the streets of Oldtown, playing guitar and singing to CD accompaniment

-Maxie saving our butts yesterday at Carnation Hotel in Oldtown in a flurry of mathematics and Chinese, when it looked for a second that we would have to find somewhere else in Lijiang to stay

-The realization that the Grumpy Card, created in a fit of inspiration by Sam and others, is in fact a Catch 22

-A reoccuring dream in which there is a mysterious underground shopping mall where there are many, many bookshelves of Japanese comics

After ten days in Lashihai, in the village of Nanyao, I havelearn the meanings of appreciation and modesty. After ten days in Nanyao, I lived with my homestay family, slept in their beds, ate their food, and used their facilities. Myhost family did not have much. They did nothave a toilet, a sink, a car, a computer, or even a laundry machine. They have a lot less than what I have butthey are a lot happier and a lot more satisfied than I am. My host sister is always smiling. Everytime I see her, she had a smile on her face and was willing to help me with everything that I need. Living in a city where an hour passes by in a second, I rarely took the time to appreciate what's around me and what type of world I live in. In Nanyao, everyday went by slowly and I enjoy everyday in the presence of people, not electronics. I talked to my host grandpa. Even though, I did not understand most of what he said, I really loved talking to him and seeing him smile at our miscommunications. I love the experience of smiling at a stranger in the village and getting a smile back. The community and the bond within this village astounded me. For the host stay families to spend their time and effort to take care of one stranger for ten days and pour their dedication to ensure that I was comfortable and well fed, no words can express how grateful I am. I love this experience and I have changedand learned toappreciate what I have a whole lot more.

We had been in Lashihi for so long at this point, our daily routines were cordinated perfectly and our host parents truely felt like family. Wake up, breakfast with mom, hurry off to school, class, lunch at home with mom and nienie, class, pingpong, dinner, then sleep. And each new day was as wonderful as the last as we rolled through this flawless system and slowly the dreded last day crept nearer and nearer.

When that day finaly came, there was an odd quiet about the house. I woke up early to finish packing. I came outside of my room and greeted my mother with our usual"zaoshang hao", we made our usual small talk- about weather and the cat and the food. It was like neither one of us wanted to admit that it was our last day together so we just sat there for the two hours as we watched the minute hand slid closer and closer to my time of departure.

At 5:55 a.m.we left the house and my leaving was painfully clear. We walked up the hill to the instructor's house where I would see her for the last time. We didn't say much- just how we hoped I could come again, but there was an unspoken sadness that lured in every word between us. The instructors told us it was time to go, and I looked over at my mother.

It is so weird coming from a culture that uses hugs to express almost anything- congratulations, sympathy, apology, hello, goodbye- to go into a culture that seems touse almost no physical contact to express emotions at all. For a moment we just smiled- a silent mutual "I had a really good time with you" feeling. In the last second I asked for a much awaited hug and received one. It was the perfect goodbye for me, although I'm trying to imerse myself in the culture I really needed a good-old western style goodbye.

My time in Nan Yao village living with Naxi people has changed me profoundly. I now see a clear line between what I have and what I really need, western bathrooms seem a forgein luxury. I consider the nicer hostels with bathrooms the splurge of a life time now but if i were there a year ago with my family I probably would have been thinking why are we staying in such a crappy place. I've a whole new perspective on adventure and the oppurtunities found in talking to a stranger. I was just walking around the village the otherday with some friends and these old ladies called us to come sit with them and offer us plums and then one invited us back to her house for a game of majang in which i was slightly distracted as this random woman had let me play with her beautiful baby. The simple generousity of those people who have so little astounded me. I have new hopes and dreams of travelling the world. That village, the children, the old ladies, everything changed me. Oh and I also know how to cook a few Naxi dishes and handwash my clothes and shoes now too.
