We'll be on a plane as the US plays Brazil in soccer, that literally could not have turned out more poorly, or if we get destroyed i guess its for the better. If we lose by more than 5 goals I vote we pretend to be Canadian (A travel trick my mom used to employ all the time). I pray American Airlines is somehow able to get that game to the plane, though I doubt it. Just so it's in writing, I'm picking a 2-0 Brazilain victory.
I'm just posting this because I'm always up super late before a trip, I'm too excited to sleep until I collapse in a heap in bed. I can'tsay how exciting this is, I have a brand new journal and great books and some new stuff and I'm just ready to go. This is going to be great compared to rainy new york, because at least when it rains in Brazil I feel like its nice, in New York its grey and gloomy. Hope the instructors had a great time at orientation (any birdy on a perch or whatever its called?)Woo Hoo!

Will enough people be taking and sharing pictures throughout the trip that it would be okay if I didn't bring a camera? Sorry if I missed reading about this in some of the prep materials.

If anyone is interested in bringing instruments, it's your call, just remember it will add to your carrying list... but I agree that will add rhythm to our adventure, so it's your call... I'm considering bringing my guitar... =)

I just thought I'd introduce myself before we all start on this big adventure. My name is Dan and I live in Pennington, New Jersey which is right near Princeton University. I'm gonna be a senior this coming year and I'm really interested in ecology, environmental science, and sustainability. I don't want to bore you guys with every aspect of my life, especially since we're gonna have time to learn more about each other. Anyway, I'm super psyched for this trip and happy packing.

- soccer, we will get to play, lots of Brazilian kids play barefoot on the beach, but if you want to bring your equipment just realize you will have to carry extra items that will weight your bag.
- malaria, meds are per doctor recommendations, so please ask them.
- film camera is fine, digital might be easier, your call.
- Phrase Book, we'll have phrase books for you in Miami.
We are all here in orientation, getting ready and excited to see you soon...
Hi everybody Here’s a few points addressing your questions: – soccer, we will get to play, lots of Brazilian kids play barefoot on the beach, but if you want to bring your equipment just realize you will have to carry extra items that will weight your bag. – malaria, meds are per doctor recommendations, so […]
When should we begin our malaria courses? Like do we need to already have it in our systems before we get to brazil? Also, is it totally unrealistic to bring my film camera because of the bulk?

I am writing you from the Sierra's here at our Dragons instructor orientation. Leo and Isabela our on the way up here and we are so excited to spend the next two weeks focusing exclusively on our upcoming trip!!!
Now, to answer your questions: You will be able to find a hammock in Manaus. If you want to buy a lightweight one here in the states, great. otherwise, you will be able to find one in Brazil. As noted in a prior post, we are strongly encouraging students to bring sleeping bags instead of sheets. On the trek, nights can get down into the low 50s so a lightweight sleeping bag will be much more appropriate than just a sheet. Nights not on the trek should be warm. Also, I just realized that the packing list does not mention hiking socks. You will need those and they should not be cotton. Personally, I prefer wool.
Please let us know if you have any other packing or trip questions for us. Otherwise, keep checking the board for any new info...
