the first few days of thailand have been great. we are still absorbing the fact that we are here for six weeks!

the food is absolutely fantastic. it's interesting;you try new things every meal, not knowing what to expect... kind of exciting!

we're being exposed the the culture and religion of thailand, and the people love us when we say hi (saw wat di cap) and thank you (cap kun cdap).

i'm really excited for the rest of the trip and there will be a lot more to share in next few weeks.

As Thailand Summer 2008's first ever "communicator", it is my pleasure to be the first yak yak-er to post in the in-field posting type.

First off, yes all of us are here, all of us are fine, and all of us are having a great time! On our checklist of the day, we have: fully introduced our selves (through the "five minutes of fame" ice breaker, in which each group member was interviewed by any and all), had our first leadership role in choosing and buying snacks under a budget, started on our nice tans..., had our first meal, some thai language challenges, and most importantly talked about fears and excitements, and set some important ground rules. Most excitement is centered around trying new foods, learning the language, home stays, monestary stay, and all-around seeing he sights. Some are even excited af the possibility of nutrition through bugs and/or snake blood. And definetally another huge excitement comes from the sence of community easily felt amongst ALL in the group. Maturity is probably the easiest and most exact way of describing our work on the ground rules.

It's just amazing to see how different we can all be, with our own individualized regional customs, yet how well we can come together when any challenged is posed.

As we say good-bye to LA, to the Hacienda Hotel, to all of these other crazy WTBD kids, to ... comfort, we only get more and more excited on embarking on our incredible journey.

Thank you for reading

Ps. Shout out to TF5!!!!

Here you go the long awaited Itinerary:

Tentative Thailand Itinerary for 2008Week One:Sukhothai- Directly after flying into Bangkok we will travel by train to the old capital of Thailand. Here we will learn language and cultural orientation, traditional Thai massage, we will visit the market and will learn firsthand about the government program One Village One Project, by visiting the clay making villages surrounding the old capital. We will also ride bikes around the village and check out the ruins around the area.Mae Hong Song- Here will enjoy the beautiful scenery while we visit several hill tribe villages. We will trek through the rain forest and see how each different tribe lives daily life. Hiking in the day and spending the evenings in the village in home-stays, we will get the chance to experience what it is like to be in a villager. Week Two:Chieng Mai- One of the larger towns in Thailand we will be stopping here to learn about Burma, work on ISP’s and do several team building exercises. In Chieng Mai we will learn more about cooking and continue working on our Thai language as well as culture lessons. It is a great place to check out the markets and the local attractions.Chieng Rai- In this Northern Thai city we will visit the market observe the Northern Thai Culture. Here we will make final preparations for our trip to Burma.Burma- We will hop across the border and visit a city a few hours away from the border of Thailand. Here we will do some more trekking, although it will be a little different than the trekking we did in Thailand. We will also have a little solo time, some time to reflect and get ready for the next step of the adventure.Week Three/Four:Chieng Muan is a small town in the province of Phayao. We will be doing home-stays here. You will each be matched up with a high school student that is close to your age and you will have the chance to live as a Thai High School student for several days. We will be conducting a English Camp and just hanging out with the local Thai students, going to class, playing sports, and learning about daily life. Here we will take a break from traveling and work on ISP’s and learning language and culture.Week Five:Ratchaburi we will be learning more about Thai Buddhism. Here we will be staying in a Forrest temple, meditating, and learning about Theravada Buddhism from the monks and nuns at the temple. Week Six:Ko Yak Noi- A beautiful island in the south of Thailand. On this island we will be doing some community service projects as well as learning about comparative religion. We will have the chance to work with Thai students on this primarily Muslim island doing community projects. Bangkok- We will be here to finish the trip. Here we will see the sights of this huge city and enjoy our last few days in Thailand.

Safety is our number one concern. There are a few placeson this itinerary that might raise red flags for you. Weare constantly monitoring these places to make sure they are safe forus all.

Okay so I have a couple questions:

1) The malaria-do we need to get medicine for the entire trip or will we be only exposed during a certain point? Also what is the antibiotic for?

2) I know on past hiking trips, wool socks were always the best way to go-no blisters, keeps feet dry. I'm just wondering why cotton socks are suggested?

3) For the cross-trainers-are those suppose to be more just like a rugged running shoe or almost a hiking boot but not quite? Also, are we only suppose to bring 2 pairs of shoes-a pair of sandals and cross-trainers?

4)For dress shirts-do they have to be button down or is any type of dress shirt that is not low cut and covers the shoulders appropriate?

Sorry I have so many questions!!

Hey all

I'm getting really excited about this trip. Quick question about packing. What kinds of pants should i bring, because it says i should bring durable, light weight pants, not jeans. What does this mean? It says i should bring 2-3 pairs of them, and only one pair of shorts. Are we going to be wearing long pants more often than shorts?

I am wondering if i should bring s digital camera. It says that I can, but it seems a little risky.

In the preperation manual, it repeatedly says, "you can buy this item in thailand." what are the best things to not buy in the states, and rather in thailand?

I just wanted to write you a quick note and let you konw that we will be at a training in California for the next few days. If you have quesitons you can reach us on our cell phones or please write a yak-yak and post it, it might take a bit longer for us to answer. We will have access to internet and cell phones it just will not be immediate.

I am sure you all are coming up with more and more questions as you begin to pack and finish up collecting all the things you may need on our journey. We look forward to answering all those questions, just post them or call us and we will get back to you ASAP.

We are all looking forward to seeing you shortly in L.A.
